The Autumn Sunset Infinity Scarf celebrates the season of beautiful red and orange leaves, ripe pumpkins, apple cider, and cool breezes. The color is all autumn, and the stitches are like a gorgeous row of perfect sunsets.
A Quick Word About the Autumn Sunset Infinity Scarf
At 60 inches long, this infinity scarf provides lots of styling options. Wear it long and drapey like a scarf, wrapped double around the neck as a cowl for warmth, or pull a loop up over your head for that sudden chill. Make one for yourself now, and then make more for gifts this winter!
If you're unfamiliar with cluster stitches, there are a couple of new stitches here for you, and just reading them can make them sound complicated. Look at the pictures and sit down with the yarn and hook, and I think you'll find that they are very doable. Just pull up your loops to the height of the new st and keep practicing - you'll have it in no time!

The Wrap Up
And that's all there is to the Autumn Sunset Infinity Scarf! This crochet pattern should work with any worsted weight or sport weight yarn - in fact, I started it with Caron Simply Soft and loved the results, but couldn't get any more of it in the right color, so had to start over with the cotton. And as it turns out I love that just as much! I can't wait to see what all of you make using this pattern!

Looks lovely - I just printed it out. By the way, I love how you make the patterns printer-friendly and can delete sections.
Crafty Gardener
beautiful scarf, thanks for the pattern
moogly
Thank you all! 😀
Monique
Hi, This looks beautiful! Just printed it and am going to make one for my daughter to go with her new red winter coat. I'll try to send you a pic when done. Thanks
moogly
Thank you Monique! I hope you both enjoy it! 😀
Jettie
Hi,
This is a beautiful pattern...I have worked it 3 times and i always come out with the wrong amount on row 5....added 18...am I missing something....hope you can help...
moogly
Hi Jettie, and thank you! I think Row 5 is a little tricky, because sometimes you skip 3 sts, and other times you skip 2 sts. Maybe that's what is tripping you up?
Deborah
That is so beautiful and feminine looking. Thanks!
Christi Hannan
I love this pattern but still consider myself a beginner so I find it a little intimidating plus I am more of a visual learner. I am going to give it a try but may end up just buying one from you!
moogly
Thanks Christi - and that could definitely be arranged if it's how you want to go!
Shawn
Hi! I normally just do small projects, like amigurumi, and this one has me a bit confused. The stitches I understand, but when it says to "turn," I have no idea what to do. Do I turn it upside down so that I am working on the bottom, because I don't understand how to turn a piece that is joined. Or... I'm having a "DUH" moment, which is completely possible. 😉
moogly
Hi Shawn! Just turn it over to work back in the direction you came, as if it were worked flat. Or you could call it turning it wrong side out to work from the "inside" of the scarf. Does that make sense?
Lindsey
I may be thick but I am confused by HCL and FCL, I haven't heard these terms before. Could you tell me what stitches they are please?
Lindsey
Maybe I should read the top of the pattern fully ;-p I was so excited to start that I skipped it!
moogly
Ah, glad you found it! 😀 (I was trying to figure out how to say "look up" without sounding rude on the internet lol!) I know how it goes though, I do that to myself all the time.
Sara
What a beautiful piece. Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. I do have one quick question though, am I permitted to sell my finished project? Thanks!
moogly
Hi Sara, thanks so much for saying so! You can sell items made from any of my free patterns, but I do ask that you include a link back to moogly on the tag or listing, giving credit for the pattern itself. Thanks so much, and good luck! 🙂
Sara
You're very welcome! I'm so happy to stumble upon your blog and can't wait to get started on some of your free patterns. Thanks again! 🙂
Sarah Cook
How much is this scarf please?
moogly
Hi Sarah! The pattern is free, but I'll shoot you an email regarding commissions of finished products! 😀

What a wonderful pattern. I just finished this in a lovely charcoal grey and it turned out beautifully. This was so much fun to make! Thank you for (yet another) wonderful pattern. xx
moogly
😀 You're very welcome!
Grace B.
Hi! I'm making this right now and it's coming out great so far. I'm using black yarn though. Thank you for making the pattern so easy to understand!
moogly
You're very welcome Grace! 😀
Lorraine
Hi!! I love the pattern! I'm getting caught up on row 2. The DC in the first st, is that the first SC from the beginning? If you could word picture it or video that would be great! My first section of CL is getting all off. Thanks so much!!
moogly
Hi Lorraine! Because of the turn, the first stitch of Row 2 is actually worked in the last stitch of Row 1. Slip stitches at the end of each row create the "infinity" or circle of the scarf, but it's actually turned each time and worked as if in rows. I hope that's a little clearer! Let me know if it's not!

COULD YOU PLEASE UPLOAD A DRAWING OF HOW TO FOLLOW THE PATTENR I LOVE THE WHOLE PATTERN IVE ATTEMPTED TO FOLLOW IT ABOUT 5 TIME AND I CAN SEEM TO UNDERSTANT IT THX I LOVE YOU WORK <3

Hi Dulce! Take a look at the chart on the Winter Sunrise Scarf - that might give you an idea! https://www.mooglyblog.com/winter-sunrise-scarf/
Jennifer Ruggles
I am so in love with this scarf and want it to be the very first crochet item I make for myself. lol I am having troubles already on the 2nd row though. When you say skip 2 dc and 1 sc and crochet in the next dc or skip 1 sc and 2 dc and crochet in the next dc...does that just mean to skip 3 stitches? Because my stitches aren't always ending up in the right place to skip 2 dc or 1 sc and 2 dc. Does that make any sense? I've taken it apart once already thinking my count must have been off but I'm still not getting them matched up. Please help? Maybe a picture of what that row is actually supposed to look like? I'm a visual learner. Thank you
moogly
Hi Jennifer! Ambitious first project! 😀 I'd suggest you check out the Winter Sunrise Scarf at https://www.mooglyblog.com/winter-sunrise-scarf/
It's the same stitch pattern, just not joined in the round, and there's a chart/drawing there that should help you out! There's also a video tutorial for the cluster stitches.
And yes, that means to just skip 3 sts! 😀 Let me know if you have any other questions!
Lynne Stauffer
I love the pattern. It is a challenge, but I felt up to it until I got to row 3. The end of the repeat "skip1ch and 3 sts, sc in next st." I feel like something is missing to line up the next 5 FCL . Is there an update I am missing? Thanks!
moogly
I'm sorry you're having trouble Lynne! No updates I'm afraid. Maybe taking a look the chart for this pattern will help? It uses the same motif, but only one wide: https://www.mooglyblog.com/winter-sunrise-scarf/
Holly
3rd time I've tried out this pattern (it's lovely, but I get frustrated) & once again Row 4 only has 116 instead of 200. I've even been through the pattern backwards and can't find where I'm messing up... any insight or advice is much appreciated. 🙂
moogly
That is a mystery Holly! There are 10 repeats of the pattern, so whatever it is, you're not missing it every time, just some of the time. Hmm. My best guess, without seeing it, is that once in a while you forget to put 2 sc in each ch space, only doing 1? It seems so random, though, 4 out of 10 repeats, in 200 sts... I wish I could be more help!
Holly
Thanks for replying! Turns out in Row 3 I wasn't chaining 2 between each FCL, but just between the HCL & FCL's. Here's a pic of my finished product (http://i.imgur.com/Csyylim.jpg); Thanks for the lovely pattern!
moogly
That's gorgeous Holly! If you're on facebook, please come share it with the moogly page - I know others would like to see it too!

Teresa
I absolutely LOVE this pattern! Have made two so far with plans to make more in assorted colors for myself. 🙂 Thank you for sharing this pattern!!
moogly
I'm so glad you like it Teresa! 😀
Joyce
I don't understand the edging. If Row 12 is Row 4, there is already a single crochet edging around the scarf so I don't understand what row the edging goes around that has chain spaces as the edging says to SC in each stitch and 2 SC in each chain space around.
moogly
Hi Joyce!
The Edging Instructions read "Working into the opposite side of the starting ch, join with a sl st to one of the sts and ch 1."
This means that you are working a row of single crocheting into the starting chain - turning the scarf "over" if you will, rejoining the yarn with a sl st, and working a row of sc into the chains, working opposite Row 1. Does that help?
Joyce
Yes, that does help. Thank you very much. I made the scarf with a red tweed yarn and it's really pretty. :o)
moogly
So glad to hear it! 😀 It sounds lovely.
Rachel
Hello! You've designed such a beautiful infinity scarf! I'm trying my best to make it myself, and I'm stuck at the end of Row 2. I've gone as far as I can go with my repeats for Row 2, and have ended with 5 dc, right before the slipstich where the tail of the wool is. The pattern says "Skip 2 dc, dc 5 in next st. Repeat from * 9 times, finishing last repeat with dc 2 in 1st of the round. Join with a sl st in the top of the ch 3." Do I now finish row 2 with a 2 dc in that stitch (the slipstitch) and then sl st in the top of the ch3, or do I just sl st to the top of the ch 3 (which I did at the beginning of row 2)? Either way, when I turn it, it just seems quite a few stitches to go before I reach the first HCL on Row 3. The HCL is six stitches along, whereas my first HCL is eight stitches along, I think.... I have taken a couple of photos of the point where I'm up to. Please help me : )
Tamara Kelly
Hi Rachel! Let me see if I can help. At the end of Row 2, you work those last two dc sts into the same st as you worked the first two dcs into - the very first st of the round. So with the ch3 and 2 dc from the start of the round, and the 2 dc at the end of the round, it's like you have 5 dc total worked into that same stitch. (Whereas all the previous repeats have you working 5 dc shells, this last shell is split between the start of the round and the end of the round.) So then you sl st into the top of the ch 3 and then turn.
Then to start Row 3, you ch 1 and sc into the first st, which is the top of that ch 3 from the previous round. Then you skip the 2 dc sts you made at the end of the last round, skip the sc that preceded them, and skip the ch 1 that came before that. That should bring you to the top the last HCL of the previous round, where you then work the first HCL of this round.
Does that help?
Rachel
Thanks so much, Tamara! What you said was of great help to me! I worked on it last night, and now I'm on Row 5, fingers crossed it's smooth sailing from here on in. I discovered a bit of a boo-boo: my original starting chain must have been twisted, and now my scarf doesn't lie flat. I hope that down the road it won't impair how I wear my scarf. Oh well... I plan to make another one after this one, to gift to a friend : ) , so by then I'll have the hang of it? ; )'Thanks so much for your help!
Cathy
Hi...I love this scarf...but right here is where I get TOTALLY confused. Ok so im on row 3 ive skipped the stitches needed im on the hcl and fcl...ive completed that...now im confused. Do I skip the 5dc and go to the next hcl fcl cluster? Do I sc those 5dc? Or do I fake a hcl fcl cluster ontop of the 5dcs? Sorry for all the questions, but I just cant seem to get it. I looked at both drawings and im still boggled. Thank you in advance for all your help.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Cathy! I think this is the part you're looking for: Skip 1 ch and 3 sts, sc in next st. So you should skip the chain and the first 2 sts of the 5dcs from Round 2, sc in the next/center dc of the 5dcs, and then start the round over by skipping the last 2 dcs and next ch. Does that help?
Cathy
Yayyy!!! Thank you so much. That totally helped.
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm so glad!
Mandy
This scarf is so lovely! I'm a bit of an overachiever and decided to do this as my very first crochet project, with much help from my boyfriend's adorable grandma and a plethora of video tutorials. I'm about halfway through, and I'm so in love, I can't put it down!
Its coming out a bit lumpy, though. I thought that could be because I'm still a noob, and my stitches aren't uniform. Is that an accurate guess?
Tamara Kelly
It could be tension, but the cluster stitches are supposed to be "3D" so if those are the lumps then you're right on track! 😀 Welcome to crochet - very ambitious indeed!
Mandy
By lumpy I mean.. almost ruffly in a way. The scarf as a whole doesn't lay flat. But to be honest, I think I quite like it this way. As I'm finishing it, I'm finding that the ruffly look adds a bit of femininity. 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Well that's alright then! 😀 I always say, if you like the end result, then it's a success!
kay
I've taken this appart 3 times. I have 180 chained, and followed the instructions. I finish row 1 with the dc not sc. What am I doing wrong?
Tamara Kelly
I think you're doing it just fine! The last stitch you make in Round 1 is a dc st (one of 5). Then you sl st to the sc that you made as the first st of the round. From the pattern: "finishing last repeat with sl st in the first sc." This means that the last repeat ends with a dc and a sl st in the first sc. 🙂
Heather
I'm stuck on row 3. When I begin the first repeat, I encounter the 5 consecutive dc from the previous row instead of the 3 sts and 1 ch as the pattern indicates. Before beginning the first repeat, the next hcl is about 6 sts and a chain away, not 3 sts and 1 ch. Could you please clarify? Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Heather, sorry for the confusion. There's a chart for the motif here, that might clarify: https://www.mooglyblog.com/winter-sunrise-scarf/
Lydia
I have done all the rows until row 6, where you being the process all over again. everything up to this point adds up fine, but when I do row 6 (which uses row 2 instructions), at the end of row 6, it does not add up correctly... you begin with a ch 3 and 2 dc. and you should finish with 2 dc to make it look like 5 dc. instead i am finishing with the last half cluster, in the last stitch, meaning i ran out of room for the last sc and 2 dc. it doesnt make sense because i have done this part over and over, looking for my mistakes, and i cant seem to find any because everything has worked out until now. help!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Lydia! I'm not sure what's happening without seeing it. Are the motifs stacking up directly on top of each other, and the problem is only at the end? Or are all the motifs shifted to the left?
Lydia lee
Yes! They are shifted and that is why I am having such problems! Why did it become shifted when everything else adds up?
Tamara Kelly
Ok, they should line straight up, so that tells us the problem is in the first few stitches of the row. Let me see if I can put together a chart to help.
Lydia lee
Ok... Would it be the first stitches in row 6 that is off then? Or previous rows?
Tamara Kelly
Whoops, missed this before I replied about the chart. It sounds like it's the first few sts of round 6 to me.
Tamara Kelly
Ok, there's now a chart on the pattern page! I hope it helps!
Lydia
Thank you so much! I will try to figure it out now. hopefully it works out!
Emily
So pretty, I made one for myself with a purple and blue variegated wool (red heat grape fizz) It took me 3 tries to do, I kept messing up. Like others I would end up with wrong stitches ending or stitch counts. Thank goodness my mom is close and can usually figure me out.... the first mess up she had to stop herself form continuing so I could do the scarf. My biggest was I got through it (I thought) and 1/2 way through the repeat of rows 2-5) and realized I forgot to turn the stupid thing!
I love the pattern so much I have started a second one for my grandmother in red hearts williamsburg print for christmas. This one is going so much better! I love how they look with the multicoloured yarns..
Tamara Kelly
😀 So glad you were able to figure it all out (with some help from mom of course)! And thank you!
kait
urg, I ended up with a like... mobius twist to the scarf? it wasn't there two rows ago and I'm not sure where I went wrong?? it's not supposed to have a twist in it right? it's supposed to be just a flat ring when you lay it out? 🙁
i'm probably gonna frog back a row or two and see if i can fix it.
Tamara Kelly
Oh no! Yes, it's supposed to lay flat. Unless you like it as a mobius, of course, then roll with it!
Siew
Hi, I love your crochet chart! May I know where did you get the program from? Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Siew! I use Stitchworks Software. 🙂
Brenda
I do wish you would do an instruction video on how to join the length of chain together without twisting it. I've chained and stitched to the 4th row twice and had to strip it back totally, now I'm about to give up. Actually I wish you would do a total instruction video on youtube with this scarf. I get lost on the beginning of rows as well.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Brenda!
It's true, it's not easy! One trick you can use: At the end of the pattern, notice that you're supposed to go back and add a sc edging to the foundation chain - the starting side of the scarf. Instead, start with either foundation single crochet of 180, OR ch 181 and sc in the 2nd ch and each ch to the end, and then join in circle. This is a little easier to see the twist. A third option is to go ahead and let the chain twist (minimizing it as much as you can), and then work the first row into whatever part of the chain is "up" - so if there's a twist and you've been working into the back hump, work into one of the other loops for a while, then the other, til it comes around again. That foundation chain will get covered up with the sc edging at the end, so no one will be able to see what part of the chain you worked into anyway. 🙂
As for confusion on the pattern itself, does the chart help at all? I can add a tutorial to the list if not.
Amber
Thank you so much for this beautiful pattern! I just got some lace yarn with sequins that I think this will be perfect for! Love your work, thanks again!
Tamara Kelly
Ooo, that sounds lovely Amber! Thank you so much!
kelly dalessandro
I've tried row 2 repeatedly and am so frustrated.the stitches don't line up right. On the part that is repeated 4 times are all the clusters connected or is the second cluster started in the next stitch? Then my question is if its started in the next stitch y doesnt it line up to a skip of a sc and 2 dc ...actually ive tried it both ways (clusters connected and not connected) either way its not lining up then I get to the end and cannot complte the sequence...any help would b greatly appreciated thanks for your help in advance...
Tamara Kelly
Hi Kelly! I'm sorry you're having so much trouble. Have you checked the chart? That should help you visualize the stitches.
Amy
Is there a way to do this without joining the circle? My chain strand gets wonky and it drives me crazy.
Tamara Kelly
If you're looking for a straight scarf in this pattern, the Winter Sunrise Scarf is it! 🙂
Cheyenne
Hi,
I love this pattern, but I'm looking to make it longer. Is there any specific amount I add it by to keep the pattern in tact?
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Cheyenne! To increase or decrease length of scarf: add or subtract any multiple of 18 sts.
Elainebitt
Hi! I just finished this scarf, it turned out beautiful! It's a gift for a friend.
I am curious about the "turning". Why do we turn? I only turned for the sc rounds (but not for the last sc round), but I am curious about it.
I do have a quick question. Would you recommend blocking the scarf?
thanks,
E.
Tamara Kelly
Hello E! The turning is to keep the seam straight and prevent the pattern from leaning in one direction. Blocking lace patterns is always a good thing! 🙂
Elainebitt
Thanks Tamara! I might make this one again, this time for myself. My friend really liked it!
Donna
This is a beautiful pattern...my fav infinity scarf actually. I'm making my 3rd one. The first one I use 3 strands of thin yard together for wearing as a coat scarf. Second one was a gift ...third mind again in Unforgettable yarn. When doing the clusters you have to add a chain extra after each one in order for the sc row to have enough stitches to add up to 200. You did not state this in the pattern written instructions. The diagram has it though. That might be what's throwing some. Hope you don't mind me stating that because you are my fav designer. Your designs are always fashionable....not granny looking....and gorgeous!!! Thx for your inspiration!!! Much appreciated!!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Donna! 🙂
