The Wrap Stitch Crochet Hat is a joy to stitch! The shifting colors of Mary Maxim Prism yarn add beautiful depth to the textured stitches, but this design is just as lovely in any yarn you have on hand. Even better, you can make it in any size, using the babé Crochet Hat Templates! Whether you are stitching for spring or building up your gift stash, this is a satisfying project that lets the yarn and texture shine.

A 5 Stitch, 2 Row Repeat
When designing this hat, I wanted to create a pattern that was incredibly flexible. We start from the top of the hat, with simple rounds of half double crochet. This sets us up in multiples of 10 stitches to create a flat circle. Rnd 1 has 10 sts, Rnd 2 has 20, Rnd 3 has 30, etc. If you're making a custom size with the hat templates, work until the circumference matches the top curve of the template for your size. If a jump of 10 sts is too many, then you can increase by only 5 for the last round of the crown - either way works!

Once you have the circumference, it's time to make the sides. As long as you ended the crown with a multiple of 5, this stitch pattern will work! There are 2 rows in this Sides pattern repeat, so that we get an "offset" look to our wrapped stitch texture. It doesn't matter which of these row repeats you end this section on, and you can add more for a "slouchier" look too. If you are making a custom size with the hat templates, then work until the length is about an inch short of the length of the template - or however wide you want your brim to be!

The last step is adding the brim. In the yarn shown, I made a brim that is 6 sts wide. But you can make it as wide or as narrow as you prefer! Working back and forth in these short BLO rows creates a lovely, stretchy brim that I really like the look of. But you can use whatever ribbing or brim style you prefer - make it your own!

Made in Mary Maxim Prism!
I had a few skeins of this yarn in my stash, just waiting for the right moment -and it's here! This is the first time I've used this yarn, and I really enjoyed it. It has a lovely, luxurious look to it, with gorgeous gradient depth of color. Although it looks a bit "wooly," it's actually 100% acrylic! I used 2 skeins to make all four sizes shown here.

Follow the Pattern or Make Your Own Path
As mentioned above, you don't have to use this yarn to make this hat. You don't even have to use a yarn of the same weight! With the babé Crochet Hat Templates you can use this pattern to make a hat in any size. You can switch the top rounds to single crochet or double crochet as well (again, just end with a multiple of 5 on the last round of the crown)! I think these hats would look great with pom poms too - and in so many different fibers. One quick note on fibers though - watch out for yarns like alpaca which grow a lot with blocking... or as soon as they get wet. If you do use one of these yarns, you'll need to make a gauge swatch to figure out how big that crown really gets!

NOTES:
Instructions for working 10 rnds in hdc with a flat circle are given below.
The notes in italics for size apply to hats worked with Mary Maxim Prism to the given gauge. If you are making a custom size or using different yarn, crochet to measure.
When using a thinner yarn, if you need more than 10 rnds for the crown, continue to increase by 10 sts per round, or 5 sts if the size gets too big.
If you prefer not to use the CSDC stitch, you can chain 3 or used a Stacked Single Crochet or whatever dc turning chain/stitch substitute is preferred.
When finishing the brim, the last slst2tog may end up in the last 2 sts, or in the last st and the first st of the last rnd of the Sides. Either is fine.
