Why Weaving? Why Three Books? What’s Happening?
It’s February, a traditionally slow time for giveaways on Moogly. So I’m taking this opportunity to do a little pre-spring cleaning! All three of these books were sent to me by Stackpole Books, in the hopes that I would publish a review here on Moogly. Well, there are only so many weeks in a year, and so many niches I can cover.
So for this giveaway, I have collected three books that were sent to me about weaving! All three have “Review Copy” stickers on the front but are otherwise like new (and no stickers inside!). I am running out of space on my bookshelves, so I’ve decided to gift these three books to one lucky giveaway winner, here on Moogly!
First, a little bit about each book included in this giveaway!
Cardboard Loom Weaving by Harumi Kageyama
“Start weaving today on your own handmade cardboard looms!
With the instructions in this book, you are only minutes away from creating your own one-of-a-kind woven scarves, pillows, handbags, and more. Step-by-step instructions walk you through how to make simple looms from cardboard. Make flat looms, circular looms, and three-dimensional looms for tubular weaving. Then follow the instructions to learn to weave a variety of textile patterns, and make the 25 original projects. Hats, wrist warmers, boot toppers, blankets, seat cushions, pot holders, and more–there is no limit to what you can weave once you know how!”
My Comments: I love how approachable this book makes weaving for the complete beginner! Not only does Kageyama teach you how to weave; but she also teaches you how to make your loom and accessories out of recycled cardboard! And there is a great variety of projects – from the ideal first project pot holder and simple scarves, to hats, bags, and cozies!

Shadow Weave Simply by Susan Kesler-Simpson
“Add Shadow Weave to your repertoire with Susan Kesler-Simpson’s easy-to-follow instructions.
Susan’s approach is to first break down the structure of Shadow Weave so that any level weaver can understand how alternating light and dark threads in both warp and weft can present a dominant motif outlined with an identical shadow. She walks you through how the structure builds and weaves, and once you comprehend how the weave structure works, you will be able to weave any of the 25 project patterns in the book. You will also have the knowledge to transform other drafts to Shadow Weave, or to design your own Shadow Weave pattern.”
My Comments: Now this book is for those who already know how to weave! It dives right into in-depth, charted instructions for specific weaving techniques. I understand very little of it, but the pictures are very pretty. It gets great reviews on Amazon, including one titled, “I have been waiting for this book for 10 years!” Weavers, this looks like a great addition to your library!

Innovative Weaving on the Frame Loom by Noreen Crone-Findlay
“Open the door to the possibilities of what you can weave on your frame loom!
A comprehensive guide to the frame loom, this book introduces the weaver to the basics of frame loom weaving and also more advanced techniques. Learn how to weave tapestries for wall hangings or handbags, lace for scarves and market bags, geometric shapes for alpacas and dolls, modules to sew together to make larger items, and so much more. Patterns for various weaves such as houndstooth and checkerboard are included, as well as instructions on how to adapt other weaves to the frame loom.
Photo-illustrated step-by-step instructions are given for all techniques and 20 unique projects from home decor items to pouches and bags, scarves and other wearables, stuffed toys, bookmarks, and more. Looms used in the book are 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch sizes, but the instructions are adaptable to any size loom. Once you know the basics, you can use your woven modules to create whatever you imagine!”
My Comments: The frame loom seems to be a halfway point between making your own out of cardboard, and having the whole big LOOM setup. These looms are a great way to get into weaving, and I love the way Crone-Findlay uses these simple tools to create amazing projects. She really surprised me – I had no idea you could make these projects on these looms! The photos make it really tempting…
