I was recently introduced to the lovely designer Ashley Leither - and then I found out her husband has been creating handcrafted crochet hook! So I was excited to try one out - and give another one away

I first learned of Ashley's work when I reviewed her book, Poufs & Pillows! And I got a peek at her Etsy shop too - which is where you can find the gorgeous hooks we're talking about today!
I got to try out a K hook - isn't it pretty!? The Leithers create gorgeous hand-turned crochet hook handles made with a variety of exotic woods. Each has a unique look!
For the crochet hook itself, Boye crochet hook that is inserted into the handle - so this is perfect for Boye fans who want something pretty and more ergonomic!
I enjoyed using my K hook, and I found it comfortable in both of the two most common holds: pencil and knife. One thing to note is that the exposed shaft of the hook is on the short side - so this hook is more suited to simpler, shorter stitches.
One of the things I really like about this hook is the length of the handle - it's almost like a magic wand! And it didn't dig into my palm no matter how I held it.
Now, a bit about their hooks from Ashley - the expert!
Each crochet hook handle is hand turned, sanded until smooth, then beeswax is applied to the handle which makes it even smoother. A coordinating aluminum crochet hook is inserted into the handle with industrial strength glue. Finally, it is tested for comfort. Every crochet hook is unique in its own way, no two crochet hooks are exactly alike.
The Story behind the crochet hooks:
I have crocheted for over 6 years and I was getting back into designing and crocheting full time after my year-long maternity leave, during that time I just crocheted sporadically making projects for my daughters and beanies for the Lizzie Bear Project.
Christmas 2017, I suffered a crochet injury, I crocheted so much that it hurt my arm to move. I took a break for a few days and it healed. But when I picked up my crochet hook again I had pain in my hand, it wasn't horrible but annoying. It continued for a couple of months but then it got so bad I had to stop for a few weeks. I thought it was a permanent problem but I was lucky that it was just an injury that needed to completely heal. During the resting period, my husband and I started talking about what I wanted in a crochet hook, to make crocheting comfortable for me. I wanted something with a wooden handle but longer than the standard crochet hook. Also, I wanted it to be lightweight. I tried many different crochet hooks but nothing really fit my needs.
So my husband set out to bring my design to life and he did! The crochet hooks that he started to design didn't just meet the design features but they were gorgeous!
Since switching to using only my husband's hooks, I can finally crochet pain-free, which is how crocheting should be.

I love these hooks. I too suffer repetitive strain injury in my hands through crocheting and knitting over the years. It's not nice so I understand your pain injury.
Lisa Horsfall
Your husband is very talented.

I just recently injured my crocheting hand, my left hand, and am having a little pain in my thumb area; I wonder if this new Ashley Leither Design style hook would help me continue with my passion - I enjoy crocheting very much and do it while viewing TV every night. I know all hooks can be used with either hand, there is no such thing as a "left-handed hook" - LOL! Although I tell people I have a special hook - if I won this contest I would be telling the truth in that I have a SPECIAL HOOK! Thank you.

It's hard to say, as everyone is different, but usually, a bigger handle is more ergonomic!

What a beautiful hook! I occasionally have hand pain when crocheting. It doesn’t seem to happen when I knit. I do a lot of both, since we now have 17-month-old twin grandchildren who I love to make clothing and toys for! I’ve learned to do amigurumi toys, but sometimes cannot finish projects because of the hand pain. Would love to try this beautiful hook!

I'm not a doctor, but in general larger handles to seem to help. ♥
