At the Knit and Crochet Show last week, one of the first skeins of yarn I was handed was a bright pink ball of Red Heart Boutique Swanky. And I all I could think was, "Oooo, sparkles!" And everyone around me had the same reaction - so shiny! Well by lunch time I couldn't wait to get started, and using the commemorative hook I'd also picked up that morning, I got to work on the Suddenly Sparkles Scarf!

This infinity scarf uses exactly one skein of Red Heart Boutique Swanky - I had just enough left over that I'm not too worried about gauge. The sparkles are built right in this yarn, and the pattern is quick but still interesting. Each row is different from the last, and the end result looks great at a distance or close up!

VERY pretty!!! I would like to try this as a shorter cowl. What would you suggest for the first chain? Do you know what the "multiples" are for this? Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you nanc! It's any multiple of 2 - easy as can be! 😀 Just chain to be as long as you like and make sure it's an even number. Do note that this is modeled on a 12 year old who's about 5'3". 🙂
Nancy
Thank you! I guess looped twice would look good. But I was thinking a shorter cowl done in a thicker yarn possibly. So many possibilities!
Tamara Kelly
To loop it twice you'd want to make it longer - this length will loop, but it's a very close fit!
Suzanne
I just wanted to thank you so much for posting this pattern. It was very sweet of you! I can hardly wait to make it!
Sincerely,
Suzanne
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Suzanne!
Judy
I am a beginner and would love to do this. However, the directions are confusing. Are you showing the notation and then the explanation?
Any help to a beginner would be appreciated.
Thank you
Tamara Kelly
Hi Judy! I'm not actually sure where you're confused. There are two special stitches described after the notes, and then if you scroll down the pattern instructions are below, starting with Round 1.
Judy L
I don't understand the cluster part the most.
Tamara Kelly
The clusters are defined under Special Stitches, before the pattern instructions start. The part in parentheses is the abbreviated definition, and the part that follows is a more lengthy explanation. Does that help?
Judy
Yes, I think that helps. It sounds like something I just need to try. It will probably come clearer when I do it. Thanks so much for your help. Looking forward to this!~
michelle
It is confusing as I did the whole first round with the starting cluster, thinking it meant the first row, not the first set of stitches. So I will rip it out...
Betty Lou
Love it, can't wait until I find some Swanky-----and it uses my favorite size hook, the J. Thanks you for sharing.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Betty Lou!

Hi Tamara A friend of mine want this scarf but she doesn't want it to be in a circle is there a way to crochet straight like a regular scarf?
Tamara Kelly
Absolutely! 🙂 Just start with an odd number of stitches and turn after each row! 🙂
Stacy
ok thanks 🙂
cary
I love this pattern! All of your work is gorgeous and the patterns are so user friendly. I am currency lyrics making my second carefully some scarf and have plans to make one with number 10 crochet thread. Again, love your work!
cary
Sorry for the typos...it should say 'currently' not 'currently lyrics'. Sorry...
cary
Sorry, just saw more auto corrects. My original post should read I am currently making my second artfully simple scarf. Obviously I'm not an artfully simple typist.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Auto correct keeps everyone on their toes!
CARY
Lovely, I can't wait to make this. I'm working on my second artfully simple scarf and just love the pattern. Thank you for sharing.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Cary!

Hi!! I am Ellie, i wanted to ask that did u came on VidCon??.. umm.. my cousin's friend visited there, do u came??
Cathy davies
I love that cowl! But have you got a simple 4ply lace pattern for a scarf? Please.
Tamara Kelly
Thanks Cathy! For something in that weight, check this out: Chevron Lace Wrap 😀
Vicki
I'm not sure if your tension is looser than mine (mine is usually too loose), but I only get a 36" scarf with a J hook.Even with an N, I think it will end up around 41". I think I'll try starting with a longer chain. This will be my first infinity scarf, but I'm already thinking about which of my scarf patterns could simply be joined at the ends to give me more choices! Thanks for the pattern!
Tamara Kelly
It definitely sounds like a tension thing - I found that the Swanky wants to be worked quite loosely. 🙂
Vicki
...and I was using a different sequin worsted!
Miss Manitas
Supercute!!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you!

Suddenly Sparkles Scarf directions Starting Cluster states repeat from* once more in same st. There is no * in directions. Where should * be? in the starting cluster directions?
Tamara Kelly
Whoa, right you are! Fixed it - thanks for the heads up! 🙂

Since this scarf is being shown on a 12 year old would you need two skeins of yarn to make it big enough for an adult? I started working this pattern when I noticed the comments it was being worn by a 12 year old. I wish I would have seen the mulitples in the pattern before I started so I could have made it longer from the beginning instead of having to undo my work. Looking forward to making this scarf later. Thanks
Tamara Kelly
She is 5'4", so she's about average adult female height. I'm 5'8" and it fits me well, though of course it doesn't hang as long. 🙂
Dorothy
I love this cowl and would like to make one for myself. Our Australian yarn is different to the US ones so we always have to tweak patterns a little for them to work. It would be very helpful if you could advise the number of stitches for each repeat please. eg multiple of x plus x ?? Thanks for your lovely pattern. xox
Tamara Kelly
Hi Dorothy! This one is super simple - any multiple of 2! 🙂
Ericka
A.Dor.A.BLE!!!!!!!!!! So pretty for the holidays....hhhmmmmmm..........
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Ericka!
KATHI moore
Tamara, I, also, whipped this one up today. Two Moogly's = perfect day! Thasnkjs. I could not find any RH Swanky, so I used Deborah Norville Fashion Jewel tones in Red Diamond. I will post a pic on Raverly later.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thanks so much Kathi! I'm so glad you liked them!
Anna
This scarf is very pretty but i find it to be very itchy. Am i the only one that feels this way?
Tamara Kelly
I found it surprisingly comfortable - I honestly expected the sequins to be itchy or annoying - but everyone has their own sensitivity level. I know personally I have a lot of trouble with wool!
Joann p.
Hi Tamara! I was sitting with you in Manchester when you started creating this pattern. I have several skeins of Swanky, now I know what it will become! Thank you for posting the pattern!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Yay! Oh I wish I could remember everyone I met - it was so much fun and there were so many people! I'm so glad you like the pattern!
Mel
Just started working on this...i have done patterns before where you connect the chain, however with this one no matter what i do it seems to get twisted. Is there a trick with a chain this long for it not to twist? Have taken it out twice now....feeling frustrated
Tamara Kelly
Hi Mel! Twisting chains are super frustrating I know. Instead, try starting with a ch of 109, then skip the st closest to the hook, and sc in each remaining ch (108) and THEN join to work in the round with a sl st in the first st. 🙂 Just leave about 6 inches of yarn at the beginning and use that to cinch up the bottom of the row when you weave in your ends. 🙂 Hope that helps!
Nancy
I find that if I do a FSC (foundation single crochet) instead of chaining and then sc in the chain, that it stays straighter and is much easier to join. It's essentially the same thing as Tamara said, but in one step. You can find how-to videos on YouTube.
Mel
Thank you both. I will try both and see which one works the best. Appreciate the help.
Tamara Kelly
You can see a FSC video right here on Moogly: FSC VIDEO
Nancy
I'm left-handed so it really helps me to watch a video specific for lefties. YouTube has several.
Janice
First off, I love this website and all of the patterns. I'm just wondering how this pattern would work out evenly...the beginning cluster (the chain and the DC2tog) create two stitches before the Ch1. The starting cluster plus the Ch1 create three stitches where the rest of the clusters only create two (with the cluster and Ch1). I was wondering if we are to slip stitch to the DC2tog stitch to start the next round after the cluster round. Thanks for clarifying.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Janice! The ch 2 of the starting cluster does not count as a stitch. 🙂 I'll add a note to that effect in the pattern!
Paula
I've not read all of the comments to see whether or not this has been addressed. Wondering if anyone has found this yarn a bit difficult in that it splits easily. Also, the sequins are quite scratched. Might just be me. Thanks. Happy hooking
Tessie Aaron
I've started and stopped this scarf 5 times I just can't get it straight, it keeps twisting on me, HELP
Tamara Kelly
Hi Tessie! I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble! One solution is to work the first round as a row, and THEN join them to work in the round, using the tail to cinch up the little gap at the bottom of the first row.
Liss
Hi Tamara, Liss from Australia here ?. This has been mentioned but I'm still a little confused ?. In rnd 3: I ch2 then dc2tog(creating 3 posts in 1 stitch), Ch1/sk1.... Then if I follow the starting cluster, I would chain2 (more?, creating 3 chains over the skipped stitch?) then dc2tog? I looked at the close up and see that wouldn't be right, nor would the stitch count work. So do I drop the ch2 after that very first cluster? Kinda stuck now. Thanks so much for your help and all your hard work. Liss ?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Liss! The Starting Cluster is just the first one of the round. After that it's the regular Cluster - separate instructions for that one are provided. 🙂
Liss
Thanks! Of course ?. I Just LOVE your site Tamara! I learned to crochet last Easter (2014) using YouTube and once I found your tutorials there's been no stopping me! Thank you ?
