The Happy Holidays Tree Skirt and Stocking use the same main stitch pattern, with a couple of differences. With the Tree Skirt, it's worked in rows, and there are increases in the pattern to give it that circular shape as you work from the center out.
The Happy Holidays Stocking, on the other hand, is worked in the round, without turning, and there are no increases - though there's some shaping at the heel that's a little trickier!
Nonetheless, the basic idea is the same - a series of dc sts, with a "dip" in between, creating that scalloped look. This dip is created with a ch 2 and sl st that drops the current row down a level, then a dc in the middle of that previous row, then a sl st and ch 2 that lifts you back up to the current row's level.
Add in every other row worked in the back loop only, and you've got the basic pattern down! Whether you are working in rows or rounds, increasing or working even, it's a fun stitch pattern with a lot of impact! I hope this video tutorial has helped you make these free crochet holiday patterns - and that you have a happier holiday for it!

I love your patterns I would like to see some of your Christmas in July patterns but I just have not been able to find them
Tamara Kelly
Hi Ruth! I'm guessing you are referring to the Christmas in July Crochet Along I'm currently participating in. Here's a link to my pattern, and there's a link to the rest of the patterns in that post: https://www.mooglyblog.com/beer-growler-cozy/ 🙂

I really wanted to try this pattern After 3 hours I gave up. Your written pattern does not match our tutorial pattern which also does not match your symbol patter. I did not know which one to use. Very sad because I was needing to make a gift.

The tutorial here is for the general stitch, not the particular item. The chart is an abbreviated version of the pattern. Is there a particular part that's tripping you up?
Rachel
I agree with Marcia. You're written pattern does not match the tutorial. For example, in all the rows it says "dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, dc in next stitch", in the tutorial you said "dc in the next 3 stitches. Also, at the end of each row "turn, ch 2. In the tutorial "ch 2, turn. There is also other contradictions between the written and tutorial. Confusing and frustrating because you said this can be done in a weekend; I doubt it because I'm trying to match both but not working. I'm going to have to look for another pattern or buy a tree skirt from a store.
Tamara Kelly
The tutorial is for the general stitch pattern, the tree skirt is slightly different because it has increases to create the skirt shape.

I love your work but I have to say the tutorial was NO help at all. Why don’t you have your tutorial actually follow your pattern at least for the first three rows so we can get it down. Just showing examples is no help at all. That is nor what I consider all tutorial. I purposely picked Patterns with tutorials so that it can help me learn how to do it. If I don’t have that I wouldn’t do the pattern. The only reason I’m continuing with this pattern is I have a friend that has done it so I’ve had her actually walk me through it. I will avoid further patterns like this if they don’t have a tutorial that actually follows the pattern and do the stitches. There are too many designers out there that actually do this so why would I make it hard on myself. I do love your designs so I hope you’ll consider doing full tutorials that follow the pattern . Thank you
Tamara Kelly
I'm sorry you had trouble. We've changed the way we do tutorials a lot over the past few years.
Frank Taylor
I watched the tutorial and had no problem following the pattern
Tamara Kelly
I'm so glad to hear it, thank you!

It's a shame that u tried to make two patterns into one video .... U should make one for each as they are different
Marie
What does BLO mean on row 3 on the written patern?
Tamara Kelly
BLO stands for Back Loop Only 🙂
Maria
I just wasted about 4 hours of time trying, ripping out and trying again the Happy Holidays Tree Skirt. My first row I had 47 stitches. My 2nd row no matter what I tried (including ripping out several times) do I come out with 59 stitches. I always end up with 63 stitches. What am I doing wrong. Were there any corrections done for this pattern????
Tamara Kelly
No, so far it's been made successfully several times. Have you watched the tutorial video?
Maria
I got this pattern a few years ago . Until I tracked down your website I never knew anything about a video or graph for this pattern.
Tamara Kelly
I'm so glad you found us! ♥

Tamara, I have crocheted for about 50 years and I understand what these ladies are saying. But Rather like the stocking done in 3 stitches instead of 4. I made the tree skirt for my daughter, but ripped it out 4 times before I finally got it right. I will make another since 2nd time will probably work better. Now she wants matching stockings 6 of them for there fireplace. I will have to shorten the patter and make them not so wide either. Having fun though quite a challenge, but I'm up for it. The other commenters should do one or the other, follow the patter or follow the turorial and they should come out all right. Thanks Tamara, my daughter loved the tree skirt even wot its flaws' nit she cpu;dn't tell. My next one will just be better. And I used Mistletoe yarn but still did BLO every other row, it still came out darling. It's beauty is worth the curse if the others just keep working on it.
Donna
Sorry for not proofreading, My daughter loved the tree skirt even with its flaws; but she couldn't tell; only me. Thanks again. I am also going to make the Snow Drift afghan to match in the mister toe yarn. I should have this down in no time at all.

♥ Thank you, happy holidays!
