    Broomstick Lace

    Published: May 9, 2012 · Modified: Apr 20, 2020 by Tamara Kelly · 11 Comments

Broomstick Lace, aka Jiffy Lace, is one of those things that I avoided for far too long. Sure, it's pretty, I thought, but it's got to be hard. Well I was absolutely delighted to sit down one day and discover it's super easy! And now it's one of my favorite things to crochet. Here's how I do it:

You can use this technique for clothes, blankets, whatever you like, though I don't recommend it for a potholder. The Baby In Bloom Sweater and Bonnet both use broomstick lace, and I can't wait to design more crochet patterns with this stitch. I hope this video tutorial encourages you to give it a try yourself if you haven't already. What sort of projects do you want to make with broomstick lace?

Now that I'm an adult and have recently gotten into crocheting again, I am amazed that my jr. high teacher managed to get my whole class of home-ec girls to make broomstick lace afghans! We girls would sit around gossiping like old ladies while we worked. We got a lot of laughs over it all - my afghan was super small because I pulled my stitches too tight, and another classmate's was huge because hers were so loose!

What a fun memory! And I'm impressed by her too - I have ONE middle schooler and I can only imagine! Herding cats!

I hope you don’t mind if I share a little humor. I am making some headbands for my girlfriend, who had a cranial-ectomy. I told her I was making a couple of them using broomstick lace. But my broom’s end is a little beat up so I made her a couple using PVC pipe lace. She laughed.🤣 thank you for letting me share.

Oh my gosh, that is dark humor, but the best kind. ♥ I hope you both keep laughing as she heals!
