Autumn 2015 Moogly Mini Crochet-Along Part 1: Boardwalk Bag

Published: Aug 21, 2015 by Tamara Kelly · 14 Comments

Time for the 1st half of the Moogly Autumn 2015 Mini CAL! This time around we’re making a beautiful handbag with Lion Brand Landscapes!

Announcing the Moogly Mini CAL for Autumn 2015!

I used the Boardwalk colorway when making mine, but you can use any color of Lion Brand Landscapes that you like!

What's the inspiration? The Ups and Downs patterns here on Moogly! The braided loops you love make an appearance at the top of this gorgeous bag. A rounded shape and fun accent hardware complete the look.  I love it, and I hope you do too.

Don’t forget to share your progress photos! You can do so on Ravelry and the Moogly Facebook page!

Where is a good place or site to purchase handles?

Sharon, I have no good crafting stores near me (think Walmart), but I really don't mind shopping online from Herrschners.com, Joann.com, Fabric.com, or HancockFabrics.com. For handles I think I'd try Joann's first.

What is the length of the purse handles? Are they long enough to be carry as a shoulder bag (under the arm)? I plan to use my stash of "Darn Good Yarn" recycled sari yarn.

My handles are about 24" long, but you can purchase any length you like! 🙂

I love this bag, but think this size will be too big for me. Do you have any recommendations to make it smaller?

Sure! 😀 Just make the first chain shorter! Thank you!

I'm having fun with this pattern and this yarn! I'm wondering if, after the bottom, can it be made by working in the round rather than joining after each row and then turning? I'm finding that I can see a "seam" where I'm joining the rows. I'd like to avoid that by just going around, but don't know if doing so will cause issues with the second half of the pattern.

Thanks for sharing your ideas and your passion!

Hi Sue! You can indeed to it the standard way, the only issue is that that usually causes the seam to lean a bit, and will move the first stitch around a bit by the time you get to the top. But that should still be okay! 🙂

Is there a tutorial for the sew along or just the written pattern?
      I'm new to your site.

Hi Gwenna! It's just the written pattern, though there is a tutorial for the basic bag bottoms HERE, and there will be an associated tutorial for the top as well. 🙂
