Welcome to the 2014 Moogly Afghan Crochet-a-Long! I'd been debating doing an afghan square crochet-a-long here on Moogly for a while, and when I did a quick poll on the Moogly Facebook page, the resounding answer was Yes Yes Yes! So let's get started. Read on for details!
The Moogly Afghan Crochet-a-Long FAQ: please read!
- I will be sharing the photos and links to 24 different 12" afghan square patterns. This is enough for a 4' x 6' afghan - a little bigger after you add the joins and border.
- The patterns will all be FREE, from a variety of designers. Please respect copyrights.
- All of the patterns will call for a US-I, 5.5 mm hook and worsted or aran weight yarn - yarn symbol 4. Use the yarn(s) of your choice.
- I will share a new pattern every other Thursday - this means that 2 months will have 3 patterns. See below for the schedule.
- This will also finish up all the blocks in November, leaving the month of December for joining them together.
- I will be making the squares right along with you - we'll do it together!
- There is no form to fill out, no charge to join, no list to be on. The only prize is the satisfaction of making a blanket and the joy of crochet. And bragging rights, because look what you made!
- Worried about missing a square? Sign up for the Moogly Email Newsletter (sign up in the header at the top of the page!) - it includes a link to every post from that week, so you'll be sure to see it.
- Want to share your photos as we go? Try the Moogly Facebook Page!
- Don't like the square I posted that week? Pick a new one! Want to make a bigger blanket? Make 2 of each or add in your own picks! It's up to you - let's keep it fun!

BLOCK #1: Anticipation Mystery Afghan 12" block
by Margaret MacInnis (photo by maryfairy)
(click the name of the square above to go to the download, both US and UK versions included)
What yarn did I choose for this CAL for my own squares? Lion Brand Vanna's choice in Scarlet, White, Fern, and Aqua!
And here's the Anticipation Mystery Square, as made by Moogly:
It was super fun to make, and one of the more challenging squares I've made! This photo shows the square unblocked - there's definitely some blocking to come. I'll be writing up a post about that in the future, when we're a few squares in. I didn't use the Scarlet yarn this time, but it will be making an appearance soon enough. The designer of this square, Margaret MacInnis, tells me she's got an extensive photo tutorial coming for this square too, so stay tuned for that. And stay tuned for our next block, which will be announced January 23rd!

Thank you for hosting this! I'm so excited and just hope that I can keep up. I'm looking forward to seeing all the different variations and color selections.
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm sure you'll do fine! I did one of these years ago and was able to make a blanket even with a 1 year old, 2 year old, and 6 year old - the average square takes an hour or two to make, so it's pretty painless. 🙂
Grace Peladeau
I am so excited that I found this email today. I have such big plans. I have never made an afghan before. So this will be a pain-free way to make one or more at one time for my loved ones. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. I can't wait to take on the challenge (for myself). Happy New Year and Blessings, Grace
Tamara Kelly
Thanks so much! Happy New Year Grace!
Amanda
I am so excited to participate in this crochet along. I can't wait to see the colors, designs, and layouts everyone comes up with.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Me too! Thanks Amanda!
Kristina
I am so exited! I might make 2 or 3 of each. Now just to find the colors I want to use.
Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
You're welcome! I'm off to figure that out myself this afternoon!
Autumn Wheeler
I love this idea and cant wait to start just need my new yarns to come in that are on order should get to me by the 3rd square 🙂
Tamara Kelly
😀 Awesome! You'll catch up in no time!
Dawn
Thanks, Moogly. Looking forward to trying this out.
Do you have any color suggestions to buy yarn, now? (and maybe amount?) I live in NZ and because of so few yarn options, yarn gets snapped up pretty fast and I wont be able to color-match for a whole year.
Tamara Kelly
Color are completely up to you! You can go monochromatic or mix it up. Most afghan blocks use less than 150 yds, if that helps. 🙂
Dawn
How many colors will each block have up to? I'm guessing no more than 5?
Tamara Kelly
I think 4 is the most used in the originals, but of course you can use more!
Karin
Any idea on how much approximate yarn we will need? And how many total colors? I have some colors in mind, but would like to be careful with dye lots of course, and would like to possibly buy everything at once... Just forgive my "planner" tendencies... This is a big project and I'd love to do it WELL!
Chantal payment
I would like to know too, I was about to send an order for yarn, but i'll wait till I know...
Tamara Kelly
The average afghan square uses less than 150 yds of yarn, and we're doing 24 (though you can do more/less if you like). I bought my yarn this afternoon and I got 24 skeins of Vanna's Choice at 170 yds each. I'll likely have a fair bit left over, but I can always find a use for leftovers around here lol.
EmMy
24 skeins total? Or each? My math skills have failed me here.
Tamara Kelly
I purchased 24 total, but that is just an estimate, I don't have exact numbers.
Jane Donato
Can't wait to start. This is the first crochet along I have done, so I am very excited.
Katie
I'm so excited to try this out as well. I may also make multiples of each square to make a couple for gifts 🙂 will you do the whole thing in the same colors or make each square a different color? Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
Last time I did one I did all the squares in white. I just got back from the yarn store and this time I'm doing 4 colors - I'll have to wait til it's light out to take a photo! Some squares will only use some of them though. I'm sure everyone will be super creative and do their own thing too!
Shannon
Oh my - I am excited. I have my colors picked - peach, mint green, and cream. I will add in pale aqua for any squares that need 4 colors (or maybe for my joining and border). I might do one in black, grey, and ivory as well - we will see. I crochet really fast, but I have 4 works in progress right now that I have to complete before I have surgery on my elbow, which will put me out of commission for about a month. But I know I can catch up in no time. I suggest that people in the US that can get there hands on it use Caron Simply Soft - no dye lots to worry about and most chain stores carry it (Wal-Mart, Michael's, etc), or it is really easy to order from them online. I am not a huge fan of the Simply Soft, but it is much better than most acrylic yarns (not so itchy) and they have a wide range of colors.
Tamara Kelly
It's a great one for afghans! I did a CAL in 2008 using Caron Simply Soft, and it was so nice to be able to buy one or two skeins a month and not worry. Great suggestion!
christeen
The only thing with Caron Simply Soft is that it is a "light" worsted, so a noticeable amount thinner than regular worsted yarn. That means the entire project would have to be made with Caron Simply Soft, or the difference in yarn weight would be very obvious. The CSS squares would be smaller than 12x12 due to the thinner yarn.
Maria LaLima
As this is an afghan, I don't think size will be a problem. I love using Caron's Simply Soft for my projects. It is so soft and holds up really well.
I may use it or Vanna's Choice since I have a bunch of it in many colors in my stash already.
Should be a fun project! Thanks,
Maria
Stephanie
I am so stupidly excited I'm doing a happy dance at my work desk. 🙂
carrie
I am a beginning crocheter ( a real newbie!) and have been looking for a good opportunity to learn. I'm going to participate in this CAL and hope I can follow along! Thanks!
Lidya Segovia
HOW MUCH YARN DO YO THINK WE WILL NEED??? I LIKE TO BUY ALL THE YARN
Tamara Kelly
The average afghan block requires less than 150 yards, and we're doing 24 (if you do them all), so I'd budget about that much, maybe a little more to be sure.
Penny
Wow, just looked at the pattern for this square, There are parts of this that I might need help with. I'm still learning different stitches and not sure I completely understand everything, I am going to just make the squares with whatever I have in my stash, so might not match...lol...but that's ok by me because I love different...and boy I think this will be different. Since I can't buy new yarn to make this, I'm glad I like different...
Tamara Kelly
I'm going to sit down and make it tonight, as soon as the crazy after school homework and dinner time is over. 🙂
Penny
Tamara, I'm so glad to see that you respond quickly because I might need help. If I do I know you will be here to help...there are a few things I'm not sure if I understand, but might once I get started..lol...thanks again.
Maggie wolf
I'm using a hodgepodge of yarn too AND using the wrong weight; but so long as we use the same sort of weight for ALL our future squares I don't think it will matter too much. Besides, this is a great way to stash bust. 🙂
Jane Dubinski
Hi Tamara. I can't wait to join in. I am so very good and starting then stopping, then starting, then stopping then NOT starting again so your (very generous) time schedule will mean that I am not under loads of pressure! Now......... off to the yarn store! Jane x
Sallyb
Fantastic! I'm in 🙂
I LOVE the first square xx
Julia
AHHHHHH!!!!! I'm so excited! I was already planning on doing this myself, but was struggling on deciding what blocks to do. I cannot tell you how excited I am to participate in this!
Pamela
So excited to get started! Not sure if I can keep up, but I will definitely be saving each block pattern for later use. So excited to see everyone's designs and color choices 🙂
Kelly
This is exactly the motivation I needed to make my very first afghan! It seems so much more do-able for me, with it just being a few squares at a time. I hope I can keep up!
Lisa S
Instead of planning out colors I'm going to use this as a stash buster! 😀
Pamela
I'm thinking of doing mine in green and black. I have one going right now that's green and yellow stripes, so the green and black will match just nicely. I may even do several of each block to make several different afghans for gifts 🙂
Connie Kicklighter
Thank you this sounds like fun. .Will you telling how to join the squares? Still learning.
Thank you
Connie
Tamara Kelly
I'm planning a whole series of support articles, from sizing to blocking to different methods for joining! 🙂
Kristina
SO excited! I don't usually have the patience for a whole blanket but I can do a square! I have to go raid the yarn stash and see what I have! Thanks for doing a crochet along, Tamara!
Jamie Carder-Haas
I can't wait to get started... I even posted about it on our blog and am promoting it on our Facebook page so we can try to get some of our fans to join in with us as well! 🙂 Thanks!!!!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thanks so much Jamie!
Pam
Can't wait to start! Thinking of making more than one, each in different colors. Could actually have some Christmas gifts ready on time! That will be something new!
Tiffany h
This will be my first crochet along! I think I am going to try and make 2-3 of each square...maybe just 2 I don't know lol. This should help with Christmas presents this year. Need to check what yarn I already have that I can incorporate and go from there! So excited thank you for putting this together!!
tess
Finishing the 2 afghans for granddaughters.... then I will be able to get started with this... will be a break in the program!!! I get your newsletter... is it necessary to re-sign-up for the new year?
Tamara Kelly
No, once you're signed up you're signed up. 😀 Thanks so much tess!
Tiffany h
I'm having issues understanding round 10. Can anyone break it down Barney style?
Davina
I'm still working on this square and before I read your latest post I was wondering is this challenging or is it me. I'll give it another try. I'll stay tuned for the tutorial.
Heather
Thanks for hosting this CAL! I've just finished stash diving and I think I have my colors picked out.
Will you be starting a group on Rav for this CAL? It would be great to share our progress over there and see everyone's yarn choices 🙂 Thanks again, love this first square!
-Heather
Tamara Kelly
Hi Heather! Right now I'm choosing not to do the Ravelry group - I just don't have time to moderate it! But lots of pics being shared on the Moogly Facebook page!
Bobbie Hardy
It's funny! I started this last night, and it's in almost the same exact colors! Except I chose the simply soft yarns by Caron! Deep blue, mint green and off white! Same placement even! Ha! Too funny!!
eudokia
I Love it!!!!!Thanks and Happy New Year<3
Joyce
thanks so much - this will inspire me to finally finish an afghan - i love this first block!
SaMANTHA THOMSON
So excited, first square finished already! Trying to recruit the girls at work too! Thank you for doing this and thank you to the designers of each square, much appreciated! Xx
Theresa
Well, decided to join in. I bought my yarn tonight, my 10 yr old daughter helped pick the colors. Using Caron simply soft in plum, watermelon, white, and soft pink.
Brenda Nutting
I'm so excited to do this too! I'm not a complete novice, and usually have no problems with following patterns, but I also am having difficulty with rounds 10 and 11. Hope the tutorial comes out soon so I can see my errors. Happy New Year to you and to everyone here!
Sam
As soon as you posted this I saw it! I love this pattern, but not sure if have the time right now. Anyways I thought you would like to know I did a shout out about this on ravelry. I'm apart of a group called 52in52-2014!
http://www.ravelry.com/groups/52-in-52-2014
I started a granny square cal on there and suggested if anyone needed ideas, they could most certainly look on your blog as you are doing cal right now. As for me I am making one giant granny square for this cal, if anyone wants to join my granny square cal and share their pics of their finished squares please come on in, we're friendly.
I may join in later, but for now, everyone have fun!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thanks Sam! Hope your CAL goes phenomenally!
Connie
I'm new here today and would love to start the afghan but don't have pattern or video of the block.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Connie! Click on the name of the block in the blog post and you'll go to the Ravelry page for the block where you can download it. 🙂
Teresa
I have been crocheting for 30 years, but this is my first Crochet-a-Long and my first afghan. I have never been able to actually complete an afghan because I get bored with the repetition, but this one will be fun! I already have my color scheme picked out! Thanks so much for hosting this!
anna
Thank you for hosting this CAL - not that I need to join another CAL! I'm sort of addicted to them! I also love Margaret's designs!
Just my opinion, but to those worried about dye lots, unless the color difference is REALLY noticeable, having different dye lots in the same afghan should not be a huge problem as long as the colors don't touch each other. For example on different squares different dye lots shouldn't be an issue. If you are using a single color to border your squares, then you should have the same dye lot.
Also, have fun! Play with color! You don't HAVE to follow the color placement as suggested in the pattern. I've seen several squares that were designed with multiple colors done in a single color and the designer comments how much she likes it in the single color. I'm in a CAL right now and on a particular square the designer is suggesting we continue the color from the first round into the second round because it looks better - someone else had made the square that way and she (the designer) really liked it that way.
Tamara Kelly
<3 Great tips Anna, thank you!
Maureen
I started mine last night. I'm using the same yarn and I'm also using white but different shades of blue and green. I started with green in the middle. It will be fun to see what colors people use and how different all the squares will be!
Laraine
Same here Maureen!
Kandi
Curious if you have this CAL on Ravelry anywhere....like a group or project...I think that would be a great place for discussion or an easy way for people to help each other with the different squares.
Tamara Kelly
I wasn't planning on it, simply due to time constraints, trying to moderate another thing, but I am now considering it!
Helen
This is my first Cal. I' m not a fan of afghans as I get bored but I love this. I invited my mom to try as well. I'm up to clue 3 rnd9.
HEIDI BROOKS
ONE QUESTION & ONE COMMENT/SUGGESTION, T. - THIS PATTERN CALLS FOR BOTH H & I HOOKS, AND YOUR BLOG SAYS THE AFGHAN WILL BE WORKED WITH AN I/5.5MM HOOK. SHOULD WE USE THE I HOOK REGARDLESS OF WHAT THIS & FUTURE PATTERNS SAY, OR SHOULD WE KEEP WITH WHAT THE PATTERNS DIRECT US TO DO?
COMMENT//SUGGESTION: i FIND THAT MANY OF MY QUESTIONS ARE USUALLY ANSWER WHEN i READ THROUGH THE COMMENTS, SO I DON'T HAVE TO ASK. WOULD IT MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER AT ALL TO DIRECT PEOPLE IN YOUR ORIGINAL BLOG POST TO READ THROUGH COMMENTS TO SEE ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS AND ALSO OTHER PEOPLE'S EXPERIENCES? TO ME THIS IS NATURAL TO DO, BUT OTHERS MIGHT NOT THINK TO DO THIS.
P.S. - I DON'T KNOW HOW TO 'USE" RAVELRY WELL YET, BUT I FAVORITED THE PATTERN THERE AND TAGGED IT WITH MOOGLY, AND PLAN TO DO IT WITH EACH SQUARE THAT COMES UP. I'M SURE WE CAN ALL FIGURE OUT A WAY TO CONNECT THERE SOMEHOW. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK!! 🙂
HEIDI BROOKS
Sorry about the all caps in my comment - I promise I wasn't yelling! 🙂 I thought that's how this site makes the characters look as you type, and didn't realize my caps lock was stuck on until after I posted. So sorry!!
Tamara Kelly
For the hooks, they'll all call for an I hook, but not necessarily an I hook exclusively. 😉 For me, this pattern worked best using an I hook for the whole thing, but everyone should adjust for their own gauge.
Cheryl rotella
Just finished the first square and am now weaving the ends in
Tabitha
I'm almost done, but am struggling with RND 17. From the pattern, it sounds like I should be working it in RND 16, but looking at the picture, that's not possible. How did you do it?
Tamara Kelly
Round 17 is worked into 16. If you look at the tutorial photo for Round 16, you'll see the series of loops from underneath. Round 17 is worked into these loops.
Tabitha
Just kidding. I read back over the pattern after posting that and I realize I'd somehow skipped round 15.
kelley ann lahey
I decided to try this CAL. I have my yarn. I choose Red Heart Comfort. I finished my first square. I will post a picture of it some time later on Sunday. It was fun. I am looking forward to square 2.
Leigh Adams
I can't wait to start this, am off on vacation this week, so will start it when I get home next week, just can't wait, it's a beautiful square.
Vicki
So excited for a CAL right now! I have been considering starting another sampler block afghan (the first Cal I met!) but this looks like a lot of fun. Maybe I'll do both,,,,someone had asked if I made any with bright colors, so I may try one that way...
Laraine
I'm not very good at reading patterns and am stuck with the white lattice work. I did it completely wrong and had to frog that part. Is anyone finding that using a larger hook for the white is too big, or is it me?
Tamara Kelly
It's all about tension, and everyone's is different. If it works better to use the smaller hook, go with it! 🙂 As for the rest, the tutorial is now a download option on Ravelry! 😀
Laraine
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been trying all day to do the white lattice work and I have to frog that part for the 20th time. Now that I have a visual guide, I think I will be able to do it!!
Margaret
The tutorial is now available. If you click on the name of the pattern above, it links you to the Ravelry pattern. When you click on 'Download this pattern' it gives you three options---the tutorial, the UK version, and the regular (American terms) version. The tutorial will need to be downloaded separately from the pattern. For those having trouble with Rnd 10, I suggest you consult the tutorial, which breaks it down into manageable steps.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Margaret! I'll be sure to let the FB people know too!
Gillian McM
HELP! I am stuck on Round 14, I just can't make sense of it - it says join yarn in any corner tr, ch4, sk Rnd 12 corner sc, fpsc around next Rnd 12 sc, ch4 - OK so far, but then it says SK NEXT TR and sk 5 dc - well the only trs are at the corners - so where is the TR it's referring to here? The Rnd 13 trs are only in the corners, and there are no trs in Rnd 12. I'm mystified - can anyone help??
Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
Gillian there's now a separate download on Ravelry with a step by step photo tutorial! I think you'll get the most help that way! 🙂
Gillian McM
Thanks, Tamara - I found it and it did help - I figured out that I was supposed to sc into the MIDDLE tr in the corner and then skip the next one. Very confusing, I think the pattern could be a little clearer. The tutorial is quite detailed at the beginning but then it becomes just notes and they take some figuring out too. Anyway, I've finished it, thank goodness. I'm ready for something a little bit easier!!
Melissa Martin
Gillian - I'm having a lot of issues with Rnd 14 as well. If you have any tips to share I would certainly appreciate it. I have put it away to take a break (sometimes this helps me), picked it up again and made what I think was my third attempt and something was a muck at the second corner. I have put it away again. LOL. I am just figuring if worse comes to worse I will just go onto the next block and come back to it later.
Gillian McM
Melissa, I managed to figure out Row 14 - you can send me a message on Ravelry if you still need my help: my Ravelry name is Esmerelda33.
All the best!
Denise R.
Gillian, I agree. This is a hard pattern to follow. I had my sister helping me round by round. She left and I am now stuck on Rnd10. I am hoping the rest of the CAL is a bit easier or this may just become a pillow. LOL 😉
Judy
OK, I'm NOT doing this, I'm really not. I've never done a CAL, I'm just... playing with the pattern a little bit - I'm not committed, right? I don't have time, this is really insane, and just because Tamara is so charming and cool and has spaced them so sanely is NO REASON for me to join a CAL... right? right? Come on guys! 🙂 OK... yeah, I'm doing it, I think...tia for all the support on this...
Tamara Kelly
Mwahahahahah! 😀
lilif
Finished my first block today. 😉
MariainCola
I just checked out the Ravelry pattern page and looked at the various projects. Oh my goodness! There are SOOOOOOO many beautiful color variations, including solid white! I cain't wait to get my yarns out and play along! I hope I can do this one without too much trouble. 😉
Jessica
finished the square today. It turned out really nice. I wanted to upload a pic in my comment but I don't see a way to do this. I posted pics to my facebook though. I just couldn't wait to show it off.
Tamara Kelly
Unfortunately I don't have it set up to host pictures here, but you're welcome to post them on the Moogly facebook page and on the new Ravelry group - just started! 😀 http://www.ravelry.com/groups/moogly-afghan-cal-2014
anNaj
I'm in! Hopefully I will get my yarn tomorrow so I can start. I did a CAL last year but unfortunately it stopped mid way in so all I got was half a blanket. I trust we will get 24 squares and a whole blanket in this CAL. Thanks for your engagement in this.
Cheryl Thoms
Just found this CAL so I am a little behind. I sure hope I can keep up as I am sure the end result will be beautiful. Off to the store for yarn. Another excuse to get more yarn 🙂
Jess
I'm really excited for this! I've never done a crochet along project before but that makes this even more exciting. Now to pick my colors....the possibilities are endless!
Betty Plemmons
Just finished the first square!! This is going to be so much FUN!!! 🙂
Vicky
This is the second cal I have joined in the past few days. Did both squares today. I am using the Caron Simply Soft. To me the yarn is very thin and would rather use Red Heart Super Saver as this is my favorite to work with. Eight years ago when I found out I was going to be a grandma for the firat time I bought a ton of the Caron to make baby blankets. Only got one made. Both afghans will be made in lots of pale colors.
Carrie
Hey I love the colors you made your block in!
So are the squares going to be 1' by 1' (12" by 12")? I know you wrote that they would be, i just wanted to double check. If they are I think I'm going to make your blocks as well as the blocks on Dedri Uys's CAL at http://www.lookatwhatimade.net.
Do you think that would work? My main goal is to main goal would be to make a bigger blanket, and as an added plus I would be able to make ALL of the pretty squares you have rounded up! Yippy!
Tamara Kelly
Yes, 1' x 1' - and what a fun idea! 😀
Dianna Bray
I am so excited about the CAL, I love that there will only be a new square every two weeks this makes it so easy to keep all my projects going.
Thank you,
Vicki Camm
Hi, is this possible to make using UK dk or 4ply wool?
Gillian McM
I'm using DK and my first square came out at 8 1/2" - I'm just making a smaller afghan, that's all. I love working with DK!
Chris s
I hate to sound stupid but I am on Round 9. It's says BLO to be used throughout... What does that stand for? Back something? Lol. I am wracking my brain and it hurts now lol
Chris s
And might I add this is my first CAL and I'm super excited. I picked grey, black, and white 🙂
Tamara Kelly
😀 Glad you've joined in! BLO is Back Loop Only. If you're not familiar with back/front loop, there's a quick video about it here: https://www.mooglyblog.com/front-loop-only-flo-and-back-loop-only-blo/
Amy
This sounds fun. Not being a strong pattern reader will there be video tutorials?
Tamara Kelly
Only if the designers made them- I can't make video tutorials for other's patterns I'm afraid.
Glynda Warren
I can not wait. I still have to chose a couple color pallets and get my yarn. Hope to start tomorrow. This looks like so much fun!!!!. I jumped over to the facebook page and all the ones who have started got me really inspired. Great job everyone. Look forward to joining in on the fun!!!
antoinette bilocca
i cant sign in as you keep saying that my emaiL
lAND PASS WORD ARE WRONG AND THEY ARE NOT BUT YOU STILL SEND ME MAIL ANTOINETTE
Tamara Kelly
Hi Antoinette! You're not subscribed to the email newsletter, unless it's with a different email address than you used here. I don't send out any other mail.
Betty
I'm very excited to do the CAL, never did it before. The first square is beautiful and can't wait to see the rest. My questions is, if I wanted to purchase all of the yarn I will need for the entire project, how much would you recommend? Also, do you have any idea how much is needed per square or am I getting ahead of myself?
Tamara Kelly
I don't have an exact total, but the average square takes 150 yds or less and you'll want more for joining and borders. 🙂 I bought 24 skeins at 170 yds/skein. I'm hoping it's enough but might need some more at the end.
Gillian McM
I'm so torn - I don't want time to go by any faster than it does, but at the same time I'm longing for Square 2!
Helen
I've been so antsy for block 2 I did another block 1. Maybe I'll be making 2 blankets.
Jackie Budde
I bought my yarn today! We are expecting 3-6 inches of snow in the Washington DC area, which will shut everything down, so will be making it tomorrow. So excited to participate in this 2014 Moogly Afghan Crochet-a-Long!
Tamara Kelly
Sounds cozy and perfect! 😀
Angie
My grandmother made tons of granny square afghans. I've never been brave enough to try one. This will be a first for me! If it turns out decently, it's going to be a Christmas present for my niece! I may actually make one for all three of my nieces at once! Too ambitious...we shall see! I need to order my yarn!!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Welcome!
Angel
I just finished... right i time for the next block. It tested my crochet skills (since I'm still a relative newbie) and it looks pretty. Can't wait to see the how the rest of the squares turn out.
Nancy Allsgood
Where is square #2? I can't find it
Tamara Kelly
It isn't out yet - just a few minutes...
Mary
I have been crocheting for years. Have made lots of doilies, hats, sweaters, etc. However on this block I am stumped. I'm not sure of your instructions starting in round nine. How many single crochets should be between the ch 3? Also the parenthesis in round 10 are confusing. I think I will move on to the second block and maybe skip the first one.
Tamara Kelly
It's not my pattern, but the designer has a photo tutorial as a separate download on the Ravelry page that might help!
Mary
Thank you, I will look for it.
franney
Hi Tamara, i am sure i read somewhere that it was OK to use the Moogly CAL picture for Ravelry and/or blogs but i can't for the life of me find that information anywhere now so maybe i imagined it! If i load the picture up to my Flickr account and link to it properly (not using your bandwidth) is that an OK thing to do?? I am using it for my projects pages on Ravelry so that i don't have a blank picture before i finish the block 😉
Tamara Kelly
That's fine, thank you Franney! 😀
Sheri
I'm going to try and crochet along, but I'm already behind. Plus, I started another crochet along before I found this. I am up for the challenge though 🙂

You can do it! Block #2 is significantly quicker than block #1. And, if you have two then you can keep one for yourself, maybe both! (I'd keep the one I like better & give the other one to a relative I'm not that crazy about)! Good luck, & keep us posted!

What a great idea. Thanks for the inspiration!
Sabrina
I'm finding the instructions indecipherable. "BLO in indicated stitch." But the stitch isn't indicated.
Tamara Kelly
There's a step by step tutorial that's available as a separate download that might help, as well as lots of tips, tricks, and help on the Ravelry board! If you have a question, odds are someone's already answered it over there. 🙂

I have to admit that I have a hard time sitting down and making an afghan because there is so much time involved, and I find that I quite simply just get bored with it. Doing a CAL like this one makes it so much more enjoyable and actually FUN! Thank you for this fun CAL and for the new afghan I will have at the end of the year!!!!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Betty! I'm glad you're joining in!
Loa Rose Olmstead
I hope I haven't waited too long to start? Need best way to get organized. Should I start now and then work back to the beginning ?
Chantelle
I've been meaning to start this CAL for a while and today I finally started! I've gotten the first two blocks done and I am blown away at how beautiful they have turned out!! 🙂 Looking forward to getting more blocks done so I can catch up to where everyone else is at. Thank you very much for offering this crochet along!!
Tamara Kelly
😀 That's fantastic! Thank you Chantelle, I'm so glad you're enjoying it!

I would really like to join ~ I just have two blankets to do this year (one single and one double) and then I will be all set. These patterns are just wonderful!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Evie!
Tammie
A little late to this party, but so glad I'm here ! Have 2 grandbabies arriving this year... 🙂 so thinking what a great way to start some family blankets! One for each household.
Sherika
Am I the one only that has had a problem understanding the instructions. It's not a typically written pattern and I'm having a little problem with row 16. Can anyone write this row in a traditional pattern style? Thanks!
Sherika
Nevermind....I figured it out! 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Yay! 😀 I'm so glad! This was hands down the toughest block so far. 🙂
Judith
Hi, just found you yesterday and am going to do this no matter how late--ha.
My big question is how many feet or inches is the finished afghan and, more important, how many skeins of yarn--yardage, etc. I see info on what colors people chose but not yardage.
Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Judith, and Yay! 😀 The finished afghan should be approximately 4'x 6' - a bit more with the joining and borders! I don't have a total yardage - I'm making it right along with everyone else, and the borders and joining methods will be "crocheter's choice" so that will alter things a bit for everybody. However, the "average" 12" block takes 150 yds or so, so I'd budget around 4000 yds total.
Dawn
I have procrastinated long enough!! These blocks are beautiful! I have an enormous stash of yarn that can be used for this project. Wish me luck!!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Good luck! I bet you'll catch up in no time!
Denise
I finally started the CAL and thought "oh I will whip these right out and have them done in no time". WRONG! Apparently I am not as good a crocheter as I thought I was. This first one is a little harder than anticipated. I am not saying I am a good crocheter, but I can generally read a pattern. This one, for me, is HARD! Idk what it is but I am having difficulties with it. 🙁 My sister is coming tonight for a visit, I am going to have her help me figure it out. LOL Thanks so much for sharing all of them. I am going to work diligently on them.
Tamara Kelly
This first one IS hard! The hardest one of all so far, that's for sure. Do be sure to read the Ravelry thread on it and get the tutorial!
Denise R.
Thanks for the encouragement. It is a BEAR! I am stuck on round 10. My sister helped me a lot as she read a step and we discussed how it was to be done and so on. LOL Unfortunately, she had to go home and I am now dealing with Rnd 10 on my own. I am going to look at the tutorial in color and see if I can get it figured out.
Joan Dunn
I love this CAL, but why do you make it so hard to find the pattern on your web site? I eventually find it after searching, searching, searchin on both moogly and Ravelry. I just wish I could go there and click on it.
Tamara Kelly
The name of the pattern is a link, in big letters, and there are directions to click on it right below. I'm not sure how to make it easier to find.

Thank you so much!

Hi Tamara ! I have just joined this CAL. I know its too late but I had to join this. I am having problem with Round 9 of 1st block. Cant understand it 🙁
Plz help me out so I can catch up as soon as possible.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Khadija! The first block is the hardest for sure. There's a tutorial that goes with it, on the Ravelry page, that you can download. There's also a lot of help here: http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/moogly-afghan-cal-2014/2815960/1-25#25 🙂
Jody jones
Coming to the CAL party pretty late, but once I finish my current WIP I'm gonna come back through and make this afghan!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Yay! Welcome Jody!
Fiona Skye
So, I'm a little late to the party, but I can't say no to a Crochet-Along! I do have a question: how many skeins of yarn do you think would be necessary for this whole project?
Tamara Kelly
My estimates are around 24 skeins of Lion Brand Vanna's Choice, though I haven't finished yet, so it might be a couple more!
Anita
Will you be doing one for 2015?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Anita! Yes! Details here. 🙂
joan321
I would love the block patterns for 2014
Tamara Kelly
Hi Joan! They are at https://www.mooglyblog.com/2014-cal-block-24/, though not all are free anymore.
