When I asked Moogly readers last year what they wanted to see in a 2015 crochet-along (aka CAL), the majority voted for a year long afghan square CAL. And it's begun, and you can check out the latest block HERE. But a lot of readers also were interested in short-term, quicker mini CALs - so I've decided to do 4 quick CALs this year, one for each season!

And so... it's time to get started on 2015 Mini CAL #1! Here's your sneak peek!
What is it? A big crazy cozy infinity scarf, called Madly In Love! Change the color and the buttons and it's perfect for any chilly weather outfit. And there will be opportunities to make it your own too, even turning it into a shorter cowl! It's mostly puff stitches... but if you aren't "mad" for puff stitches, you can use any stitch you like, just follow the stitch counts! It's a fantastic project for beginners, and a fun pattern for expert crocheters to make their own!
To make this scarf I used 1150 yds LB Collection Superwash Merino in Persimmon, which is a Light "3" or DK/8 ply yarn. You can purchase it directly from Lion Brand HERE. It's one of my favorites - so soft, so squishy, and such lovely colors! Of course, that's for the full length version - for a cowl version you'll need 575 yds. I also used three 1.5" buttons, and a Furls US - H, 5.0 mm hook.
If you would prefer to use a worsted or aran weight, "4" yarn, you can absolutely do so! Your scarf will be even bulkier, bigger, puffier, and still lovely! Some great options in this weight are Lion Brand Vanna's Choice, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Worsted, Lion Brand Heartland, and Lion Brand Pound of Love. With thicker yarns and bigger stitches, you won't need as much yardage either!
And I have one more yarn suggestion - Lion Brand Vanna's Glamour! It's a little thinner, a "2" and would create a delightfully sparkly and glamorous Madly In Love scarf!
So when when when? The first section of the pattern will be shared on February 6th, and the second (smaller) section on February 13th! This will be the winter season mini CAL, and the others will follow in spring, summer, and autumn. I hope you'll join in!

I made a cowl with Heartland Tweed and it came out very nice and soft. Use 40% off coupons and there you go.

Lisa P. What brand of yard did you use and, where did you shop? I love those heartland tweeds.
Tamara Kelly
The 40% off coupons are typically found at JoAnn Fabrics. 🙂
Cheyanne
I had a 50% off coupon for Joann's and got a Lion Brand pound of love for $5! They should send it to you if you sign up for their emails
Tamara Kelly
Awesome deal! 😀
Sherika
Also, if you have the retail-me-not app, there is a 50% off coupon that expires today on it. JoAnn's allows you to use multiple coupons!
Sherika
If you have a JoAnn's in your area, they are having a sale on Red Heart Super Saver yarn and on Lion Brand Vanna White yarn. Both are on sale for $2.99. I just happened to have a lot of yarn already that I'm using. lol
Renee Melton
Woo hoo!! I did the year-long CAL for 2014, so I am one who voted for something smaller or short-term 🙂 I am excited to see this and look forward to participating in all of them! Thanks!!!
Peg Terry
I agree with Renee
Amanda H.
I'm in! So excited to be a part of another CAL! Do we need to sign up for this one or just check back in?
Tamara Kelly
Keeping it simple - no sign ups, just follow along! 😀
Melissa
Sweet! I impulse purchased some Lion Brand yarn that was on sale. Now I know what I am going to do with it! Thanks! 🙂
Nikki
Definitely in! I have some great thinner weight yarn that I bought in bulk a while ago and haven't found a use for yet. I think this is it!
lynn
I have some yummy Caron Spa bamboo yarn that will be perfect!!!!
Tracy G in SLP
You are so lucky! I love Spa and am so sad it was discontinued. Your cowl will turn out beautifully!
Dana nichols
I'm so excited to see more, more, more!! Love your CAL's!
Cheyanne
Oooooooooh! I will take a look at my yarn stash tonight! 🙂 Yay!

LOVE!!!
Katie
Looks great! I may mix and match some colors and textures from my stash (or from my mom's stash, haha)
Tamara Kelly
I think multiple colors will look great with this one!!
Belinda
Hi there,
Do you think this pattern would work with a thin mohair yarn, maybe with a finer hook? I bought the yarn and have been looking for a cowl type project for it!
Tamara Kelly
I think it would be lovely Belinda! 😀
Jo Schlanker
I love this idea! Can't wait to get started … thanks!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Jo! 😀
Marcia
I'm in! I bought 6 skeins of a beautiful Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable-Stained Glass with a Christmas gift card. I think it will work for this!
Darlene
Hi Tamara, I am new to this and not very computer savvy. I read above that there is no join up list per say and as I haven't done this before I'm unsure of the procedure ..I would love to do the mini cal . Do I just find the moogly page and look for the Cal on the dates specified? If you or someone could let me know that would be great
Thanks,
Darlene
Tamara Kelly
Hello Darlene! Yes, just follow along here on the blog! 🙂
Sherika
I bought a yarn brand called Purl Essence Everyday. The one I bought was Rainbow Boucle. It is 8oz, 7 grams, 621 yards, 568 meters. I know with the yards this won't be as long as your scarf, but will this be enough to complete the pattern?
Tamara Kelly
It should be enough to make the cowl version! 🙂
Sherika
Ok thanks!! I decide later to make the longer version I'll just get more yarn. Lol
Belinda mcintosh
Hi there,
I have some lovely fine Mohair yarn that I've been looking for a "cowl-type" pattern for... Would that work for this pattern? Just with a finer hook...
Thanks and regards,
Belinda
Tamara Kelly
I think so Belinda! You'd probably want to go for the cowl size. 🙂
Belinda mcintosh
Super, thanks, Tamara! <3
Tyrena
Looking forward to it.
Sherika
I don't have class this week and I'm anxious to get started! Friday is taking to long! Lol
PAULA
I going give a try.
Shiri L.
This is my first time to join a CAL and I'm really excited to do so (particularly because this is a project that takes shorter time to accomplish)! I wish we have some LionHeart brands here but I'm sure that our local yarns would also work on this! So excited! <3
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm glad you're joining in!
wendy L
I found some beautiful yarn, Big Boucle/Super Bulky 6, today at the dollar store!!! It is an awesome variegated ball called Orchard. Lots of Red/Deep Purples/Greens. It is 100g, 3.5oz, 72 yards. I do want to make it in the infinity scarf so should I need more than 4 balls?
Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
I would guess you'll need more for an infinity scarf. 🙂
Helene
If I use wool ease or heartland do I use a larger hook?
Tamara Kelly
Yes! You'll want to use the hook recommended on the skein label, or whatever hook gives you a fabric that you like the look of. 🙂
Wendy L
I'm not very good at working out the math when I don't use the exact same yarn. I was thinking since you used 8 ply that I wouldn't need as much with a 6 ply. I've never made an infinity before or bought yarn in a ball. (I would think it wouldn't matter how it is packaged when it comes to length and such) I will figure it out as I go. Thank You.
BobbiJo
I have a baby yarn that looks like it would be the same as your original yarn used. Do you think that would be ok? Was thinking it would be softer around my neck.
Tamara Kelly
Baby yarn would be a great substitute! 🙂
Annemarie
Tamara can I ask where did you buy those cute buttons I love them?! Will you also tell us how to wrap it around like that and the placements of the buttons?
Tamara Kelly
Yes! I link to the buttons HERE, though I purchased them at my local JoAnn Fabrics. I'll be sharing the rest of the pattern this Friday. 🙂
Lisa
I can't find the pattern. Is it the "Download Now" link? If that's it, it must be blocked at my job. 🙁
Tamara Kelly
Hi Lisa! You'll want to go to https://www.mooglyblog.com/madly-in-love-part-1/ next. 🙂
Camille clark
I am currently using lion's pride woolspun and a size P hook. So far I've completed the first half of the pattern but it looks super huge! Should I have crocheted for the full 24 inches or do I need to frog some rows? I also bought enough yarn for the cowl but because I used a bigger hook, should I plan on buying more yarn?
Tamara Kelly
There are lots of factors that influence how much yarn you'll need - since you're crocheting to measurements rather than a set number of rows, I think you'll be okay. Part 2 adds another 10-12" so you can make Part 1 whatever length you prefer, knowing you'll add another foot or so with part 2. 🙂
Camille Clark
Okie dokie, thanks! I'll just keep going with what I have. I love how stuffy fluffy this is turning out. But my husband asked if it was a blanket, so I was worried. I'll definitely post this on my Ravelry page as soon as I finish. I'm so excited for part two! It is quite beautiful. Keep up the good work!
Tamara Kelly
😀 It's definitely not a subtle piece! But it's not quite a Lenny Kravitz scarf either lol. Thank you so much!
Carlolyn Blake
So today is the big day! Part 2 can't wait! Sofar really loving the ease of the pattern, keep up the great work!
Jennie
Where can we find the 2nd half of the cowl version?
Tamara Kelly
I'll be putting it up as soon as I finish going through the comments! 😀
Jennie
The first part of the Cowl version says it should measure 24", but now in the 2nd part it says 14". I am guessing the 14" is correct for the Cowl.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Joann's has a 20% off your entire purchase coupon that is good Friday, February 13 thru Sunday, February 15th that was in last Sunday's paper.
Sherika
Lol, I got the text earlier! I'm trying to resist!
