    Simple Marguerite Stitch (M3C)

    Published: May 15, 2013 · Modified: Jun 20, 2018 by Tamara Kelly · 8 Comments

The Simple Marguerite Stitch is a simplified version of the usual Marguerite Stitch, which is also known as the Star Stitch. Unlike it's better known big sister, the Simple Marguerite Stitch uses only 3 tall loops rather than 5. In a way, it's a cross between the Marguerite/Star Stitch and the Trinity Stitch! And like both of these, it has great texture and visual interest. Here's how it's made.

Written Instructions for the Simple Marguerite Stitch

For the Simple Marguerite Stitch, you need to start with an odd number of chains. The stitch pattern is a multiple of 2 + 1, plus 2 more for the starting chain. It's abbreviated M3C because it's an Marguerite 3-loop Cluster!

Row 1: Insert hook and pull up a tall loop in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th chains from the hook, yo and pull through all 4 loops on the hook. (1st M3C st made.) *Ch 1, insert hook and pull up a tall loop in the back of the ch st that closed the previous st. Then insert hook and pull up a loop in the same st as last loop of previous st, then skip the next ch,  insert hook and pull up a loop in the next ch. Yo and pull through all 4 loops on the hook. Repeat from * to end, turn.

Row 2 - end: Ch 3, make first M3C by inserting hook in 2nd and 3rd chains from hook, and the ch st that closed the 2nd M3C of the previous row. *Ch 1, , insert hook and pull up a tall loop in the back of the ch st that closed the previous st. Then insert hook and pull up a loop in the same st as last loop of previous st, then skip the next ch,  insert hook and pull up a loop in the next ch. Yo and pull through all 4 loops on the hook. Repeat from * to end, pulling up the final loop from the top of the ch at the beginning of the previous row.

You make the "best" everything!! I love all your designs, and can usually tell from a picture that it is yours.....! I don't know what that means, sort of like when a person always wears the same style clothing, I guess. Do you have or can you give us a sample pattern, such as dish cloth or something similar?? Thanks for that, and all that you do!

😀 Thanks so much Dolly! I don't have a pattern using this stitch, but if you wanted to make a simple washcloth with it, I'd use an H or I hook, worsted weight kitchen cotton yarn, and a starting chain of 33 sts. Then just work in rows in the stitch pattern until it's about square!
