A couple of years ago I highlighted the Little Hearts Matter Handmade Hearts Campaign. And I'm excited to share that they have renewed their efforts for 2016!
In 2014, I shared a collection of heart shaped crochet patterns that you can make to help their efforts, and told you about the great things this charity does. And here it is in their own words:
“Children born with only half a heart cannot survive without open heart surgery within the first few weeks of their lives. Surgeons have to hand-make a heart that can do the job of a healthy one, but with only half the parts needed.
Sadly, a child with half a heart will never be like other children their age; their handmade heart will never be as strong as a healthy one. From an early age, they will need daily medication to help their heart beat properly and will face many challenges in all areas of their life. Little Hearts Matter is the only specialist charity supporting these children and their families as they navigate the unique challenges of life with only half a heart.
We’re asking you to make, bake, sew and sell handmade hearts of your own and donate the proceeds to Little Hearts Matter to enable us to continue supporting these families. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild! There are many more ideas and tools on our website too, where you can also sign up for your free fundraising pack: https://goo.gl/UzVzuD
From all the parents and young people supported by Little Hearts Matter we would like to say a huge thank you for your support.”
This cause is close to my own heart, as my oldest son has a congenital heart defect as well. While I'm glad to be able to say he is doing well, I know that it's charities like Little Hearts Matter that are working to help children like him every day.
If you would like to help Little Hearts Matter in their Handmade Hearts Campaign, please check out their website: https://www.lhm.org.uk/ They are doing important work, and I know that as crocheters and knitters we love to give back where we can. I hope you'll consider donating, and please spread the word about the hard work Little Hearts Matter is doing!
