A Modern Guide to Granny Squares Review
A Bit About the Authors (from the back of the book)
“Celine Semaan is a 20-something-year-old crochet designer from Victoria, Australia. She loves to create modern, bright, and fun pieces and spends most of her time surrounded by yarn with her two furry assistants, cats Archie and Millie. Celine has contributed to 3D Granny Squares: 100 Crochet Patterns for Pop-Up Granny Squares and The Ultimate Granny Square Sourcebook: 100 Contemporary Motifs to Mix and Match.”
“Leonie Morgan is a crochet designer and the author of four crochet books including Block by Block Crochet and Beautiful Blankets, Afghans and Throws. She is a crochet addict and loves working with color. Leonie lives in Wales, UK where there are approximately three sheep for every person. That’s a lot of wool!”
Let’s Get Right to the Point
A Modern Guide to Granny Squares opens with a beautiful table of contents, featuring over 40 patterns – I just love a good table of contents! And as you can see, the squares inside are gorgeous and colorful and oh so happy!
Right after the Table of Contents, there is an excellent layout on how to use this book! Okay, if you’re here, reading this, you know how books work. But in this case, it’s great because each of the squares gets a big two-page spread, chock full of great info!
All The Tools for Success
There are sections for skill level, techniques, stitches, charts, written directions, and more. I especially love the Mix and Match section, with suggestions for other squares that complement the pattern!
Occasionally a more complicated square takes 3 pages, but the big color pictures and charts are much appreciated!
Help When It’s Needed
A Modern Guide to Granny Squares doesn’t stop there! If you’re looking for more inspiration, The Projects section features 4 fun patterns made using the square patterns in the book. The Rainbow Arch Wall Hanging is a clever square upgrade, and the Citrus Slice Pillow just screams summer fun!
The final section of the book is the index – always handy! – but right before that, there is a small Crochet Basics section. While I don’t know that these pages will teach someone to crochet, they are a great reference for someone new, and there are some great tips on gauge and joining as well!
A Little Extra Touch
There is actually one last hidden touch, on the very last page of the book – a flap! And this is a very good thing! When you’re working on a project, keep it open to display the crochet symbol chart key!

Very exciting. I would love to win. I’m color blind. Moogly tutorials have helped me learn to crochet. The beautiful pictures in this giveaway book would be nice. My sister could look at the pictures and help me pick out colors so my project looks just like the gorgeous granny square. Currently I purchase kits because I have made horrible mistakes with color.
