Taking a Closer Look at Bernat Future Inspire

Crafting and sustainability don't always walk hand in hand - but these new yarns from Bernat make it a lot easier to crochet and knit eco-consciously. Even the labels have been made with Kraft cardboard. Bernat Future Inspire currently features 6 gorgeous colorways!

I don't know much about the process for recycling acrylic or wool, but I do know that the skein of Bernat Future Inspire I am looking at right now is lovely. It has a fuzzy, slightly woolly look, with a small halo. The feel is soft, and not at all itchy - but not plasticy either. The color is consistent throughout, yet it has a bit of a dark and light blend happening, creating a lot of depth.

The recommended hook and needle size is 9mm, so this is a wonderful yarn for quick projects. I know that The Crochet Crowd used it to make a Chunky Pom Pom Cat Ears Hat, and Repeat Crafter Me used it to create her Giant Crochet Hershey Kiss! I decided to try this yarn out, and I've whipped up something new myself - look for the new pattern on January 28th! Here's a sneak peek!

I managed to make several false starts on this pattern, and that means there was a lot of frogging and pulling out stitches! Luckily, the halo of Inspire didn't cause the yarn to stick or tangle. The halo did occasionally grab the hook, but it didn't fuzz up too much with stitching and frogging. The yarn feels soft to the touch, and is squishy in the skein, but does feel more solid when stitched up. For wearables, I think I would go up from the recommended hook size a little bit, or use a more open stitch pattern as seen in the scarf below. This yarn is perfect for home decor as well - and I'll add my pattern to the list on Wednesday!
