Announcing the 2015 Mini Crochet-Along #3: Boardwalk Bag

Published: Aug 12, 2015 by Tamara Kelly · 33 Comments

It’s time for the third Moogly Mini CAL for 2015. This time it’s a bag that's more purse than tote - but still has plenty of room for all the essentials! And because it's made from gorgeous Lion Brand Landscapes' Boardwalk colorway, I'm calling it the Boardwalk Bag!

Announcing the Moogly Mini CAL for Autumn 2015!

I'm finishing it up today, but you can see a sneak peek above! This is a large, flat bottomed purse, where the self striping yarn is shown to best advantage. And it pulls in some fun details from a past Moogly pattern - but you'll have to wait to see which one!

To make the Boardwalk Bag, you'll need 4 skeins of Lion Brand Landscapes, a US-I, 5.5mm hook and either 1 or 4 buttons. And if you like, you can use pre-purchased handles in whatever length you desire. The finishing details are up to you - handles, hardware, lining, it's where you'll make this bag your own! If you like a "stiff" bottom in your bag, some plastic canvas would also be handy.

The first part of the pattern will be shared on August 21st, and the second part on August 28th. There's no need to sign up, just join in whenever you like! I hope you'll do this Mini Crochet-Along with me!

I'm completely smitten by the bright, colorful stripy yarn in your photo. It must feel so luxurious, too, that roving texture!! You got me--I'm in. 🙂

(Even though, alas, I'll be working from my more than ample supply of leftover yarn from other projects...but heck, a roomy new purse is a roomy new purse.)

I've only just begun crocheting again after 40+ yrs, and love the idea of making a beautiful bag for fall! Count me in for this....am going shopping (online) for yarn now! Thanks for offering this, and sharing your talent and creativity with all us hookers!

As I am on a "no-new-yarn" restriction, I will probably have to substitute for the lovely Landscapes yarn. I thought I would share the yardage & weight info for that yarn for anyone else who may need to substitute as well.
Here is what I found on the website:

Weight Category: 4 - Worsted Weight: Afghan, Aran Yarn
      3.50 oz./100 g (147 yd/134 m)

I am looking forward to this project. No idea HOW I will fit it in, but, Tamara, your patterns are so clearly written and easy to follow, and produce such gorgeous results, I can't resist.

I'm afraid that Iam not familiar with the yarns that are available in Europe. But a medium weight yarn should do. 🙂

This project was a TON of fun! I enjoy working a pattern and knowing that dozens of others are out there doing the same thing at the same time--a little hidden community.

I finally got around to posting pictures of the project on my own blog: http://hardworkinghandmade.com/ready-for-the-boardwalk/

I like the rounded-rectangle shape of the finished bag, and I especially like the way the opening is constructed with that folded-over stabilizing segment. I am sure I will be using this pattern again. Thank you for the pattern and for hosting, Tamara!
