Alapaca Your Wrap is an intermediate level pattern - like most crochet lace patterns, there are lots of skipped stitches and decreases and increases and such. But really, it's mostly double crochets and chains - which means most crocheters have the skills, it's just the pattern reading that can trip you up. If you can work from charts, that's much easier, and there's one linked in the original pattern. But for the rest, here's a video tutorial for the Alpaca Your Wrap!

How to Crochet the Alpaca Your Wrap Tutorial Video
As seen in the video (click to purchase your own):
- US – H, 5.0 mm hook (Furls Fiberarts Tulipwood used)
- LB Collection Baby Alpaca (“3″ light weight; 100% baby alpaca; 146 yds/133 m; 1.75 oz/50 g; Fawn Heather)
- Alpaca Your Wrap written pattern
The Alpaca Your Wrap can be made with any multiple of 8 sts, plus 4, and to any length desired. So while the written pattern starts with ch 76 (which is 8 x 9, plus 4), you can add or subtract 8 chs to adjust the width to your own preferences.
As for the rows, it's a repeat of rows 2-5, until you get to the last 4 rows of each side, which form a sort of border. Then you join to the other side of the foundation chain and repeat everything you've just done to make the other side. Finally, work a row of single crochet all the way around, and done!
So between the video and the chart (and of course the written pattern), I hope that you can make the Alpaca Your Wrap! As you've seen in video and above photo, it can look a bit scrunched while you're making it. Blocking your wrap when it's finished will really open up the lace and show off the stitches! You can get it wet and pin it out, steam it (don't touch the iron to the yarn!), or pin it and then spray it with water. It's a bit of work, but the end result is worth it!

Amber
Hello Tamara ,thank you for the video tutorial ,it was very well explained, can you do a pattern support video for the Circle of Love Afghan please?
Sandra Slager
Tamara,
Thank you for making this tutorial! I help teach others crochet and when I find something I absolutely love I like to teach them so that they can see how each stitch they've learned can make such amazing things. Thanks for making it that much easier. By the way, this wrap will be my Christmas presents this year!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Sandra! And thank you for being a crochet teacher!

I like you video instructions about working this pattern for a wrap. Because you make doing this pattern sound so easy, I'm getting some yarn and work the pattern while watching the video.
Maryanna Reynolds
Thank you for the video I wanted to make this but I have not yet been crocheting for a complete year and it seemed a bit out of my reach right now but with your video tutorial I have changed my mind 🙂 I was however wondering if it would turn out OK with fingerling yarn or something like Bernat softee Baby light 3?
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm so glad it's helped give you confidence Maryanna! A "3" weight yarn would be perfect!
Ameita
Great video, great pattern, as always
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Ameita!
Darlene
Ok...What am I doing wrong? I chain 76, as the instructions say, I follow the pattern like it says and when I come down to the end, I have 6 sts left, not 4. HELP???
Tamara Kelly
Hi Darlene, without being there it's impossible to say. Are you perhaps not skipping 2 chs at the beginning and end of that Row?
darlene
No, I'm skipping the 2 in the beginning of the row. The instructions say work in groups of 8 plus 4 so should I be chaining 80?
Tamara Kelly
You can if that works better for you, but it's a multiple of 8 plus for, so it would need to be 76 or 84.
Darlene
I went back and watched the video again and I figured out where I was going wrong. Thanks so much for answering my questions! I'll let you know how the rest of it goes!
Tamara Kelly
😀 So glad to hear it helped!
Nancy
On the beginning of each row where you Ch3+Ch2 to equal a DC + a Ch2, could you do a standing DC + a Ch2 instead?
Tamara Kelly
Absolutely Nancy! 😀
Aya Al-Sheshani
Thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern! Your video is well-explained but I want to ask if you have a diagram for the repeat pattern, I am an intermediate crocheter but I find diagrams easier to follow.
Sending positive vibes 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Thank you! 😀 Yes, the chart is linked at the original pattern: https://www.mooglyblog.com/alpaca-your-wrap/
Aya Al-Sheshani
Oh.. I didn't see that at first! Thank you ?
Veronica
Can't hear you I love the wrap.
Tamara Kelly
Be sure to check the volume settings on your computer as well as the video! Some laptops are very quiet too, headphones might help!
Riberta cix
How many skeins of yarn? Each skein is 146 yards. Is that all that is required to make this wrap?
Tamara Kelly
Hello Riberta! The yarn needed is listed on the written pattern: https://www.mooglyblog.com/alpaca-your-wrap/
Suzanne Rollin
Hi, I love this pattern but when I look at the photo the beginnin and the end have loops and in the pattern I only found loops for the end.
Thank you for helping
Suzanne
Tamara Kelly
Hi Suzanne! Thank you! Okay, so it sounds like you are referring to the decorative edging? If you look at the written pattern, Rows 74-77 are where you make the decorative edging on one end. Then, you break the yarn and rejoin to the foundation chain in Row 78, and then make Rows 2-77 again - making the second half of the shawl, with that end's decorative edging. Does that make sense?
Nora Teaman
Dear Tamara,
I want to thank you for all the years of tutorials and patterns you have freely passed on. Your calm voice and demeaner have been so helpful when I have struggled with a stitch or pattern.
My question to you concerning the Alpaca Your Wrap is this. I am a plus size (18-20) gal and am wondering if I should make the wrap larger? I'm about 12 rows into the pattern, but don't want to go further without your opinion.
Thank you for the beautiful pattern and all the help you give.
Sincerely, Nora T
Tamara Kelly
Hi Nora! Thank you so very much! ♥
When I designed this pattern, I was wearing a 3X size, and it fit me very generously, so I think you'll be just fine. 🙂
Robin
Hi Tamara,
I would like to make this wrap for a friend's wedding. I wanted to use Cascade kid seta yarn.
Would that work ok? And should I use a larger hook? I have 600 yards of this yarn
Thank you!!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Robin! I haven't tried Cascade kid seta yarn myself, but I looked it up, and it looks like it's a Lace weight yarn, which is significantly thinner than the yarn used in this pattern. So you won't want to go up a hook size, and might end up wanting to go down a size or more. In the tutorial above, I talk a bit about how to change the width - you may wish to add another repeat to the pattern to compensate for the smaller gauge you are likely to get. 🙂 I hope that helps!
