Knit and Crochet Project Chaos? Get Those WIPs Organized for On the Go with Project Bags!

Knit and Crochet Project Chaos? Get Those WIPs Organized for On the Go with Project Bags!

Don't get tangled up in your knit and crochet projects - get organized!  Having a lot of WIPs (that's Works In Progress) on the go is one of the most common joys - and struggles - for stitchers. Here is how I stay organized with Project Bags, both at home and on the go.

    Sharing My System

Earlier this year, I participated in Craft Organization Camp - and I shared my system for taming multiple works in progress! This is something I've been asked about a lot in the past, and staying organized is one of my passions. So now that a little time has passed, I'm excited to be able to share all my best tips to solve Knit and Crochet Project Chaos! Let's get those WIPs organized with project bags!

What to Keep In Your Project Bag

Each project gets its own bag. When picking out the bag, be sure to consider the size, fabric, and how far/where you plan to carry it. Here are what I consider the basics:

    Yarn with the Yarn Label

Hook or Needle you intend to use

    Instructions or a blank notebook

Any special tools or additions, like buttons, safety eyes, etc.

Room to add the notions bag if possible

This should cover everything you need to make your project, wherever you go!

What to Keep in Your Notions Bag

The Notions Bag is a smaller, usually zipped bag, where you keep all your basic tools. When you keep all of these together, you can quickly transfer your Notions Bag from project bag to project bag. Or for longer trips, bring a bunch of projects and just one notions bag! Here are what I consider the must-haves. While your final list might be different, this is a great place to start.

Stitch Markers appropriate to your craft

Yarn Needles in a variety of sizes

    Scissors or other cutting tool

    Measuring tape

    Gauge Ruler with Hook/Needle Spots

    Pen or Pencil

Other things you might consider keeping in your Notions Bag:

    Cable needles

    Row Counter

Reading glasses (Ok, so for me this is a must!)

Interchangeable or commonly used hook and needle sizes

    Hand lotion and lip balm

Snacks - you know who you are!

Anything else you tend to reach for when stitching

    As Seen in the Video

Most of my supplies have been collected over the years - and many were gifts - but here are a few items you might want to add to your collection!

    Snap Top Mesh Bags

    Storage Bin/Caddy

    Della Q Maker's Mesh Tote

    Erin Lane Bags

Over the Arm Project Bag (similar to what was shown)

    Furls Streamline Resin Hooks

Susan Bates Twist and Lock Interchangeable Hook Set

    Lantern Moon Crochet Hook Set

    Knitter's Pride Interchangeable Needle Set

    Stitch Markers

    Gauge Ruler with Hook/Needle Sizer

The Crafty Carrying Case Free Crochet Pattern

I do keep one handmade item in my Notions Bag at all times - the Crafty Carrying Case! This way, I always have my yarn needles and scissors handy. If I have to go *really* small and compact, then I bring a Lantern Moon Mindy Pouch with just the essentials.

Crafty Carrying Case - make crafting easier by keeping all your tools handy with this free crochet pattern on Moogly!

Don't forget to look around at what you already own!

Most of us already have supplies we can put to use to create our own system for our knit and crochet projects - some in the recycling bin! Most of us need options in a few sizes, so keep an eye out. If you've ever found yourself saying, "but this is such a good bag/box/container," then here is your chance to put them to work!

    Tote bags of all sizes

    Cosmetics pouches

    Gallon baggies

    Shoe boxes

    Small plastic bins and trays

    Small promotional notebooks and notepads

Medicine bottles (for your yarn needles - remove the label first, please!)

    Old wooden trays and crates

    What Works for You?

Keeping my projects sorted into bags, with one primary notions bag, is what works best for me. And I hope that the tips I've shared inspire you to create your own system! We all have different things we consider "essential," so enjoy crafting your own kit, and enjoy your crafting more.
