What is a Yarn Winder?

A yarn winder is a machine that you can use wind yarn into center-pull cakes. Most have the same basic pieces - a metal feeding loop, the tube the yarn winds around, a clamp to secure it to the table, and a hand crank to turn it.

Though they can look confusing at first, they are extremely easy to use.  Generally speaking, all you need to do is clamp the yarn winder to a sturdy table, and feed the yarn through the metal arm loop. Then, press the yarn end down into the groove on the top of the shaft (I like to double it up to help it stick in the groove better).

Finally, start turning the crank - and watch your beautiful new cake form!
