I went LIVE on Facebook to show off the swift – check it out!
I’ve learned so much about swifts just over the past two weeks! So let’s start with just a little history…
When it comes to winding yarn off a hank, the traditional method was… the back of the chair, or your spouse/kids/friends hands. We’ve all seen the old movies where Bogey and Bacall types wind up the tension in more ways than one, right?
Then, someone invented the Umbrella Swift! I don’t know who yet – do you? They are better than relying on a person, but they can be intimidating, and indeed are sometimes tricky to use.
Then, the Oregon Woodworker invented the tabletop swift. Alas, that got knocked off as the “Amish swift” pretty quickly by Chinese companies (the “Amish” part is just a marketing term – it has nothing to do with Amish people!). This type of swift quickly became popular for it’s ease of use and storage.
Finally, in 2018, Chetnanigans stepped into the swift space with a new take – the Mag-Snap Swift!
The Chetnanigans Mag-Snap Swift is a tabletop swift that comes together in a new way – with strong, sturdy magnets! This creates a swift that breaks down even smaller, but assembles quickly and runs smoothly, with fewer bits to tangle the yarn on!
I got a chance to try out the Chetnanigans Mag-Snap Swift, and I think it’s a fantastic tool for any crocheter or knitter!
It spins beautifully and smoothly, and the strong magnets hold the arms in place. I tried it out with a variety of sizes of hanks, and the plethora of holes in the arms made it easy to adjust the pins for the perfect tension. You do have to give a bit of a push on the pins, but then they hold quite securely.
And as the icing on the cake, there’s a storage bag to keep it all together and handy when not in use! I love how this makes it easy to store, and easy to take with me on the go!
Here are the specs:
- Swift arms are 15” x ¾”, allowing for a 29” spread between two opposing arms
- Arm Yarn Pin Holes at 1” increments from 14.5” – 6” (arm end to swift center)
- Each arm has an embedded magnet that corresponds with a strong base magnet
- The Swift includes 4 arms, 4 stainless steel pins, the swivel base and a storage bag
- The mechanism used for the spin is a 3” Lazy Susan mechanism
- The base comes with rubber feet so that it does not move when in use
- Each arm can hold up to ~ 6 ounces (max of 24 oz total weight)
- All surfaces sanded to a very smooth finish to protect your yarn
Chetnanigans is such a wonderful company, run by a lovely couple, Sean and Holly. Sean’s woodworking skills and ingenuity are amazing (and he takes requests!), and Holly is a fab seamstress – the bag for the swift is perfect!
