The Tidal Wave Shawl is a great pattern for beginners - it's all double crochet stitches, and a great way to learn increases and decreases. And at the same time, it's a fab pattern for experienced crocheters to customize and make their own! No matter your level of experience, the Tidal Wave Shawl tutorial will show you how it's done!

Essentially, each row has one decrease on one end, and 2 increases on the other end - and all the increases and decreases line up. This is where the stitch marker comes in handy - pick a side, and you'll always know at a glance (no matter how many times you get interrupted!) which way to crochet your row!
And of course, the pattern tells you where to change colors for the stripes, and I do like the way the stripes look in the original, but this is where you can go your own way and make it your own! Do some stash-busting, use a multicolored yarn (and have fewer ends to weave in!), it's up to you!
I hope this video helps you crochet the Tidal Wave Shawl, and that you enjoy it! Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this pattern! I made one as a gift, using Caron cakes - 1 ball. The pattern is easy to work up, easy to memorize and the end product look amazing!

😀 I'm glad you like it! You can use whatever yarn you like really, and just stop the repeats when you have the size desired. (For videos, the links are always underneath in the bullet points!)

Hi Tamara - I have a question - my shawl is really coming out more like a crescent moon shape and not as triangular as yours. I'm an experienced crocheted and I have the pattern down and I watched the video. The inside of the crescent is the increase row. The decrease side appears to be fine, but the increase side curves into a point. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Betsy! I don't think you're doing anything wrong - that shape sounds right. If you look at the blocked image (the last one at https://www.mooglyblog.com/tidal-wave-shawl/ ), you can see what it looks like laid flat, without gravity pulling at it. Is that the shape you are getting?
ESPERANZA
I LOVE THE SHAWL BUT DO YOU HAVE THE VIDEO FOR A PLUS SIZE. I WANT TO MAKE ONE FOR MY DAUGHTER
Tamara Kelly
Hello Esperanza! To make it bigger, just keep crocheting in pattern - it will get bigger as you go, and then stop when it's the size desired. 🙂
