Now that the first year of Ficstitches Yarns Kits are done, they have two fantastic books to cap it all off - The Secret Stitch, and The Secret Stitch: A Crochet Companion. And I get to give both of them away to one very lucky Moogly reader!
As I've mentioned a few times, I'm absolutely addicted to the Ficstitches Yarns Kits - the stories, the yarns, the patterns, I love them all, and have already put in my order for the next one! Orders are only open until the end of July for this round, so I suggest you do the same!
But you don't have to have gotten the kits to enjoy the books, because they are now available on their own - and better than ever!
The story of Ailee, an Scots-Irish immigrant's journey to America (and her discovery of a very special technique and stitch) was riveting when it was serialized for the kits, but now it's all in one book, and the story flows beautifully. I got a chance to sit down with the ebook version this past weekend, and I read the whole thing in two days - and fell in love with the story once again.
In The Secret Stitch, the main character Ailee goes through love and loss, and love again, and her story is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. And exciting and dramatic and occasionally funny too!
The "fiber fiction" aspect is perfectly interwoven in the story (no pun intended), and her frustrations on that score are very relatable. C. Jane Reid is a fantastic author, and I'm enjoying reading her books - including the new series started here in year 2 of the kits!
And with all the yarny talk in the book, there was lots of inspiration for designer Laurinda Reddig! She created The Secret Stitch: A Crochet Companion, and filled it with 9 beautiful crochet patterns that hark back to the story! So you can make the things talked about in the book while you read the tale - like I did with Niall's Cowl!
Laurinda's patterns are beautifully written and there's a wide variety in here, from the simple to the complex, single crochet to celtic cable work to Irish lace! The patterns, though historically inspired, are all very wearable for today, and feature fun techniques to keep you stitching.

Hi Debbie! Thank you for letting me know! Can you tell me who the advertiser is?

Thank you for the links to Jane Reid's site and to Laurinda's http://www.recrochetions.com.
I loved the shawl fund supporting Laurinda's aunt's breast cancer journey.
But my FAVE was Laurinda's gradient Irish crochet wedding dress for her sister.
Tell me again why our fiber work is called a craft and not art?

Great question Arlene! 🙂
