The pattern for the Shocking Mandala Rug was published during the summer of 2013 on the Stitch & Unwind blog. And while the finished rug has had a home in our playroom for a while, now I can give it the pattern a home here on Moogly! I hope you enjoy this great free crochet rug pattern!
This pattern features Red Heart Vivid, an amazingly bright and bold yarn that's crazy squishy! It's a super bulky, and since I made this rug I've seen it at local big box yarn stores. If you can't find it at a store near you, you can order it online from Red Heart, or substitute the super bulky yarn of your choice - or even hold 2-3 strands of worsted together!
In the four months we've had the Shocking Mandala Rug in our playroom it's been the scene of epic Lego battles, a private tent, a turtle shell, and a safe warm place to land. It's been dragged all over, even comforting the youngest during a tornado warning. I don't think mandalas are magic, but this rug has worked it's magic time and again.

There's something wrong with Rnd 4. I put ???? where I thinks it's wrong. Round 4: Ch 2, (2 dc finishing last st with Color B, 2 dc finishing last st with Color A, 2 dc finishing last st with Color B) in the first st. Skip the next 2 sts, sc in the next st, finishing with Color A. *(???? should be skip the next 2 sts here???? 2 dc finishing last st with Color B, 2 dc finishing last st with Color A, 2 dc finishing last st with Color B) in the next st, skip the next 2 sts, sc in the next st finishing with Color A. Repeat from * to end. Join with a sl st to the top of the first st. (42 sts)
Tamara Kelly
Whoops, thank you for letting me know Mary! I've corrected the pattern. My apologies for any confusion!

Hi, Great pattern, you say 500 yards of the Vivid yard, is that 500 yards total or 500 yards for each color?
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Sharon! 500 total. 🙂
Marrie
don't you think it's very thick yarn??.....
Tamara Kelly
Very VERY thick! Thickest I've ever used personally. How else can you make a 42" rug in only 15 rows? lol
Marrie
wow! .. cool! .. excelente! .. esto es muy bueno .. asi que .. ¿cuál es el tamaño del anzuelo que lo hizo con? ... hmm?
La espera de su respuesta!!..

hello. I was going to order this yarn as it seems to be a hard one to find in my local Joann's. Would I be safe with ordering an equal number of each color (5 and 5?) or is one color used more. It looks like there is more green but it could be a trick of the eye. Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
I might have had a little bit more of one color left over than the other, but it was by not more than a few yards, and I used nearly all of both. One thing to be sure to check is the yardage - this yarn is sold in two different sizes, and while I had 50 yd skeins I've seen smaller one in the store, so you might need more than 5 skeins of each.
lisa
Thank you!
Chrissie Andrist
This pattern is excellent! I modified it a bit by using two strands of worsted held together, and used an N10.0mm hook. Of course, the rug is smaller. Is there a way that I can increase after round 13 before the final two rounds?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Chrissie! I don't have any pattern written for the next couple of rows, but feel free to experiment! 🙂
Millie
Is there a mistake on row 6 I can't seem to get 72 sts.
Tamara Kelly
There is! I can't believe it's sat all this time, I'll fix it now. Thank you Millie!
Allie
I got a HUGE ball of BERNAT Blanket yarn for my birthday ... the strand is like velour. Do you think that would work for this pattern? Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
Yes! Just remember that that yarn doesn't really stretch, so you'll want to work loosely. 🙂
Adri
thanks for sharing this. the rug is beautiful. I'm a beginner at crocheting but i'm saving this so i can give it a go at some point 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Thank you!

Thank you Adri!

I was just wondering if round 11 was correct where it says ch 2 3 sc in first stitch. Should that be 3 dc? Love the pattern! it works up fast.
Tamara Kelly
Wow, yes! 2 years in and you're the first to catch it (or the first to tell me, heh). Thank you Lori, I'll update the pattern!
Lori F
I had that round finished and it didn't look right. Thanks for the pattern!
Mary Kay
Any one able to convert this pattern to a square or oval shape? I am not a proficient enough crocheter to do so!
Tamara Kelly
I'm afriad that would be a pretty big re-design, but I'll add it to my idea list! 🙂

As of May 2018, Red Heart has Discontinued this yarn. Bummer.
Tamara Kelly
Always a big bummer when that happens! Right now it looks like Evermore is the best substitute - it would look different, but so pretty! http://www.redheart.com/yarn/evermore
