Recently I was contacted by Charles Voth, and asked to share my review of his new Craftsy class, "See It, Crochet It: Reading Diagrams!" This class teaches how to read crochet symbol diagrams - one of my favorite topics! So of course I took a look right away!

First, a little about Charles. His official Craftsy bio:
Charles Voth is a lifelong crocheter whose work has appeared in magazines, books and patterns around the world. He is a technical editor and diagram illustrator for many publications, including Inside Crochet and for the publisher Interweave, and teaches crochet at his local yarn shop.
His name is one that's only recently come to my attention, but I've only heard good things. And taking a peek at his designs, I liked what I saw!
So I was very excited to get to watch his class! In "See It, Crochet It: Reading Diagrams," Charles teaches how to read the individual stitch symbols, how they relate to each other, and how they come together to make crochet symbol charts. He covers working in rows, working in the round, how to read charts for 3D projects, and how to read charts from other countries! I love his analogy for charts - it's like seeing an xray of the project! And I definitely learned some things!
And as you go through all the techniques, you make swatches. And swatches aren't normally very exciting... but these swatches come together in the end to make a fantastic sampler cowl! So of course he goes over seaming and finishing as well.
Crochet symbol charts are something I do feel very strongly about. While you can go your whole life without learning to read them, once you get the hang of it, you'll love it! When you understand how to read diagrams, you can literally "see" the finished project and how it's all going to come together at a glance - well, maybe more than a glance for some of the more complicated ones. But 9 times out of 10, it's so much easier than wading through lines and lines of instruction!
Charles is a great instructor for this class too. He's easy to understand, personable, and very friendly. I'd be happy to watch any class he teaches!
This class is an amazing resource for anyone who wants to learn to read crochet stitch diagrams. It opens up entire worlds of patterns that you wouldn't be able to make otherwise! Learning how to read crochet symbol charts was one of the best things I've ever done as a crocheter, and if it's something you'd like to learn, then taking this class is the way to go!

That's taught in the class! 🙂

Really glad I bought this on your recommendation actually! I'm familiar with diagrams and can read them alright, but I live in Japan where most things are diagrammed and sometimes I struggle a bit with the more complex stuff. A lot of the classes were things I already *kind of* knew but I was surprised at how much new stuff I learned and how much better I understood the old stuff after watching. I second the recommendation!

Oh wonderful! 😀 Thank you Nichola, I'm so glad!
