Earlier this year I learned how to needle felt, and it was so much fun - and a lot easier than I expected! So I was super excited when Kelly from Romney Ridge Yarns & Wool asked if I'd like to try out one of their needle felting kits and do a giveaway here on Moogly - and I promptly fell even more in love with needle felting than before!
Ok, first things first - what is needle felting and how do you do it? Needle felting is using a special barbed needle to sculpt wool into 3D shapes. If you were to look at wool fiber under a microscope, you'd see lots of scales. The special barbed needle causes the wool scales to grab onto each other tightly - allowing you to build up the 3D shapes.
But how do you actually do it? You get the basic idea of the shape by rolling or squishing the wool with your hands or other simple tools... and then you start poking it with the needle! Yep, that's *really* it! The more you poke, the tighter the wool grabs onto itself, and the more you create the shape you want! Attaching new colors/pieces is the same - lay it in place and start poking! Here are a few progress photos direct from Romney Ridge Yarns & Wool:
The only really hard part is not poking your fingers instead of the wool! The needle IS sharp, and for that reason it's a craft for older kids and adults - or younger kids if you're feeling brave and ready to do some heavy supervision.
But it is so much fun, and a huge stress reliever too - the poking with a sharp needle is pretty darn therapeutic at the end of the day! Even the quiet crunch of the needle in the wool is soothing. And there are no limits to where your creativity can take you!
So back to the kit from Romney Ridge Yarns & Wool! I chose the Sheep set, which comes with all the supplies needed for 2 sheep - this includes all the wool, two needles, a couple of wooden skewers for winding the wool around, and full photo instructions.
Look at these curlies!
And when I was done, I had plenty of wool left over - more than enough to add a little addition to the sheepy family!
I made all 3 in one evening, and I was ready to make another one. It was the first time I've used curly wool like this while felting, and it still easy! Romney Ridge Yarns & Wool has real sheep and their yarn for sale, as well as a whole variety of different needle felting kits you can buy right on their site. Here are a few of my favorites!
