The Pick Your Pony Beanie is a great "messy bun hat" or ponytail hat - that lets you decide how to wear your hair! It's made of just two kinds of stitches - half double crochet and post stitches - and comes in two sizes. Here's the Pick Your Pony Beanie Tutorial!

The Pick Your Pony Beanie starts out with a magic circle, like many hats... but by turning and working in rows instead of joining at the end of each row, you end up with a hat that has an opening that runs from Round 1 to the brim - so you can slip your ponytail or bun through at whatever height you like! And with the adjustable buttons and slight overlap at the back, you can wear it with your hair down too, allowing you to adjust your style while out and about.
I hope this tutorial makes crocheting your own Pick Your Pony Beanie easier for you - thanks so much for watching!

I love it your video, but you should do you tutorial from the beginning to the end. I am a beginner . The back post and from post confused me so much. Thank you

Hi Filomena! I'm sorry those parts gave you trouble, I have a separate video tutorial for those at https://www.mooglyblog.com/post-stitches-raisedrelief/

I would like to do this pattern but with regular worsted weight yarn. Can you tell me the difference in the pattern that I need to do
Tamara Kelly
Hi Debbie! The changes would be that you'd need to make 1-2 rows more increasing, then add 1-3 more rows on the length (worked even rows), and then adjust the number of post stitches to fit your numbers. 🙂
Erica
Can you explain what you mean by adjusting the post stitches. I find working with the bulkier yarn more difficult than the worsted.. the pattern is beautiful. Thanks in advance
Tamara Kelly
Hi Erica! I've rewatched the video and I'm not sure what you're referring to. Is there a specific minute/second?
Erica
I am sorry. I was referring to using the adjusting the pattern for regular worsted weight. You mentioned to someone about how they would have to add 1 or 2 extra rows of increase but then adjust the number of post stitches . I am fairly new to crochet and don't understand exactly what you would need to do to increase the post stitches (are the post stitches the ribs)
Tamara Kelly
Ah, thank you! 🙂 The post stitches are what makes the ribbing in the brim, yes. When you increase for additional rows/rounds, you'll have more stitches - so you'll have more stitches in the ribbing/post stitch rounds, and may want to work additional stitches "flat" for the button tab.

Love this pattern. I had someone request that I make them a beanie with the back closed. What modifications would I need to make?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Randi! Thank you! To make it without the opening, hdc 9 in the first Round, join at the end of Round 1, then work the portion between the * and the ; on each round, joining at the end. So your stitch counts will be 9, 18, 27, and 36. You can work the brim around without adding the tab, and just place the buttons decoratively as desired. 🙂

Thank you!

I want to down load and print the pattern for the beanie ponytail hat. Where can I get the pattern information so l can. I'm hearing impaired and the videos are hard for me to understand.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Rhonda! The written pattern is at https://www.mooglyblog.com/pick-your-pony-beanie/ 🙂

Hello Tamara, Rhonda Lash here! I have made this hat twice before and it has always came out perfect! Recently I have tried making this hat again. I have made this hat 4 times and each time the hat is way too big. I have started for my fifth time. Do you know what I'm doing wrong. I count each row before starting another. I even tried another skein of yarn, a smaller hook , a size k. The hat was gigantic.
