I can't get enough of Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball! It's such a great size for one skein projects, and this colorway just spoke to me - gorgeous! I was inspired to create a filet mesh arrow pattern that is worked across the whole width of this super cozy and luxurious piece - the Opal Arrows Infinity Scarf!

Here's a closeup of the filet pattern laid flat. See the arrows created by the mesh? Simple, but appealing, and they give the scarf such great drape!
I really enjoyed plotting out this design - it makes for a very generous cowl! And as I refined the pattern, I realized it only takes a 3 row repeat and one skein - making this the perfect travel project too! And there's a chart below for those who prefer charts - for this pattern, it really makes it easy!
It's hard to capture just how sparkly and colorful this yarn is on camera - keep an eye out for it in stores so you can see just how beautiful it really is!

Notes and Tips:
If you prefer a longer cowl, you will need to purchase an additional skein of Shawl in a Ball, but you can just continue with the 3 row repeats until you get the size desired.
If you do not like the Chainless Starting Double Crochet (abbreviated CSDC), you can substitute a ch 3 for the stitch.
Do NOT work into the chains from Row 2 on - just work 2 dc into each ch-2 sp.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Row 1: Ch 45, dc in the 4th ch from the hook (skipped 3 chs count as first dc of row), ch 2, skip 2 chs, *dc in the next 4 sts, ch 2, skip 2 chs; rep from * until 2 sts remain, dc in the last 2 sts, turn. (28 dc)
Row 2: CSDC in the first st, dc in the next 3 sts, [ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc in the next 4 sts and chs] twice, ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc in the next 6 sts and chs, [ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc in the next 4 sts and chs] 3 times; turn. (30 dc)
Row 3: CSDC in the first st, dc in the next 5 sts, [ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc in the next 4 sts] twice, ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc in the next 2 sts, [ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc in the next 4 sts] 3 times, dc in the last 2 sts; turn. (30 dc)
Row 4: CSDC in the first st, dc in the next st, ch 2, skip 2 chs, *dc in the next 4 sts, ch 2, skip 2 chs; rep from * until 2 sts remain, dc in the last 2 sts, turn. (28 dc)
Row 5: Repeat Row 2.
Row 6: Repeat Row 3.
Row 7 - 108 (or to length desired): Repeat Rows 4 - 6; break yarn and finish off leaving an 18" tail.
Assembly: Using long tail, whip stitch the last Row to Row 1 without twisting scarf.
The Opal Arrows Infinity Scarf kept me company through Iowa, Illinois, Colorado, and Utah! And now I just need the weather to turn cool so I can start wearing it. I think it just might be my favorite cowl this year!
Of course, you don't have to use the Om Opal colorway - the Opal Arrows Scarf can be made with any color! I can't wait to see what you all do with this pattern - if you share on social media, be sure to tag @mooglyblog - I love seeing your creations!

Hi Tamara, I Would like to make this wider / shorter for a shawl/cowl, 14 - 16 wide {used 15"to figure}. The best I can figure I need another 20 stitches [60] + 5 to get the width but I havent a clue: a] how that will affect the pattern and b] how much shorter [too short for a shoulder cowl / shawl?] that would make it? please help! I am thinking of using the Lion 'Mandala' I picked up yesterday. What do you think?

Hi Eunice! This pattern can easily be made shorter just be eliminating row repeats, but making it wider would require either doubling the entire design or a complete redesign of the filet pattern - or using thicker yarn/yarn held doubled.

Hi Tamara!
I need your help. I'm following your instructions for the first row, but when I get to the end, skipping two chains, I have 3 chains left to DC in, not two. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong; I frogged it three times, still I get the same. Please help!

Hi Gina! It's hard to guess without being there, but my best guess is that it's an error at the beginning - are you skipping 3 dc at the beginning? "dc in the 4th ch from the hook (skipped 3 chs count as first dc of row)" - or you chained one too many chains. Or didn't skip one in one of the repeats...
Otherwise, honestly, if everything else is correct - stitch count, etc - I might just pull that last chain out and keep going! Odds are it won't be visible in the finished project. 🙂

Once sewn, you really can't tell. I made mine in Healing Teal colourway; it looks so stinking good, I had to make another! So I started another in Restful Rainbow ... And again, I've got an extra chain. I frogged it and tried again. I still have an extra chain. At this point, I figure, once sewn, you can't tell, right? So no big deal. I love this pattern! Easy to remember the repeats. Thanks for thus one!

Yep, just ditch that pesky chain and move on! 😉 You're very welcome!

What does co not work into chains from row 2. Just work 2docs into chains 2 space First I tried crocheting same row an was a few stitches short. Please let know to do because I love the pattern up to now it looks okay except row 3. Thanks
Tamara Kelly
Hi Carolyn! I'm afraid I can't figure out what you're asking. Does your work match the crochet symbol chart?
Susan Browne
Your patterns are lovely. This yarn is horrible. The weight is very inconsistent with most being fingerling weight when label says medium weight #4. Buyer beware.

Is there a video tutorial for this pattern? I can’t find one but I’m still learning and reading patterns are difficult for me
Tamara Kelly
Not for this one, I'm afraid. Does the chart at the bottom help you visualize it?
