The Moroccan Tile Afghan Stitch Tutorial demonstrated this stitch pattern when worked in rows. But that left some wondering just how to work it in the round, as seen in the Moroccan Midnight Cowl and Moroccan Market Tote! So now there's a tutorial for that - right here!
Moroccan Tile Stitch in the Round Video Tutorial
Moroccan Tile Stitch in the Round Photo Tutorial
Both the video and photo tutorials were shot using Red Heart Soft Yarn and a J hook from Craftwich Creations.
This stitch, when worked in the round, starts with any multiple of 3 sts. For demonstration purposes, I'm working it into a row of foundation single crochet, but it can be worked into a chain or into any series of sts, as long as it's a multiple of 3. You can start each round with a Chainless Starting Double Crochet (CSDC)/Standing Double Crochet (STDC) *or* a chain 3 - it's up to you.
Round 1: With Color A, CSDC (Alternate: ch 3), ch 1, dc in the first st (V st made). *Skip 2 sts, [dc, ch 1, dc] in the next st. Repeat from * until 2 sts remain. Join to CSDC (or top of ch 3) with a sl st. Remove the hook from the active loop and place a stitch marker in the loop to secure it, so it won’t pull out as you work the other color.
Round 2: With Color B, STDC (Alternate: join with sl st and ch 3) in ch sp of 1st V st of previous round. Ch 1, dc in the same ch sp (V st made). [Dc, ch 1, dc] in each ch sp around. Pull active loop and working yarn of Color A to front of fabric, then join with sl st to STDC (or top of ch 3). Remove hook from loop, place marker in loop so it doesn’t pull out.
Round 3: Replace hook in active loop of Color A, CSDC or ch 3, ch 1, dc between first and last V of the row before the previous round (NOT in the ch sp, but between the Vs). [Dc, ch 1, dc] between the V sts of round before the previous round around, enclosing previous round. Leaving working yarn and active loop of Color B behind fabric, join with sl st to CSDC. Remove hook from loop, PM in loop so it doesn’t pull out.
Round 4: Insert hook in the ch sp of the first V st of the previous round. Replace hook in active loop of Color B and pull it through the V to the front, leaving working yarn behind. CSDC, ch 1, dc in the ch sp of that first V. [Dc, ch 1, dc] in each ch sp around. Pull active loop and working yarn of Color A to front of fabric, then join with sl st to CSDC. Remove hook from loop, PM in loop so it doesn’t pull out.
Continue repeating rounds 3 and 4 until you're done, and then finish off with an odd numbered row. There are two patterns using this version of the stitch here on Moogly, and at least one more on the way! I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial, as well as the patterns. And if there's another tutorial you're looking for, please do let me know!

Hey there! I really enjoy your tutorials, they're quite informative and easy to follow. Thank you! I was wondering if you had any tips/pointers when it comes to increasing this particular stitch. I'm wanting to make a beanie. Thanks in advance. 🙂

How would one go about doing this for a shawl? I was thinking about making an afghan/shawl after watching the tutorial. Great job. BTW I love the shiny yarn and the interesting hook. I have some like that but in brighter colors. The only thing is, it has absolutely NO stretch to it and I don't use it much. This would be so nice with the black....like a stained glass effect. How would I go about getting a straight edge?
Marty
I found the tutorial for the flat version. Thanks so much
Tamara Kelly
Oh good! 🙂

Hi, I am following your pattern with the colours you used and I am finding that the colour that pops is Katmai (grey) whereas yours is the Acadia (beige). What I am doing wrong? Thank you.
Tamara Kelly
My best guess is that you switched them at some point? Maybe made one too many rounds in the Katmai? It's hard to say without being able to be there and look at it in person.

Hello, thank you for this fantastic tutorial on the Moroccan stitch. Do you have a method for increases and decreases? I would like to make a poncho using this stitch.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Barbie! You can check out the Moroccan Midnight Hat for how I've done that. 🙂

Thanks for this video tutorial. I am making your Moroccan Basket. I was wondering where I could buy the stitch markers that you use in this video. They look pretty sturdy and I like the way they open and close. Thanks very much.
Tamara Kelly
I'm glad you liked it Gigi! In this video I'm using lobster clasps - they can be found in the jewelry section of most craft stores, and on Amazon (my affiliate link): http://amzn.to/29rJCpA

Love, love, love this pattern! I made the cowl almost exactly as you have here, except I couldn't find the Midnight yarn and substituted with RH Unforgettable in similar colors. So much fun, and your tutorials and videos are excellent! Thank you so much.

Thank you so much Michelle! 😀
Jacqueline
Hi, do you have a full video tutorial for the Moroccan basket? I would like to make a larger one but not quite sure where to start and finish!
Many thanks
Tamara Kelly
Just for the one strange transition round. But as long as you have a multiple of 3 I believe you can make your circles at the bottom as big as you like!
