The Moroccan Tile Afghan is warm, cozy, a fast V stitch pattern to crochet, and full of color! It's the latest free crochet blanket pattern on Moogly - and I've included guidelines for 6 different sizes!
The stitch pattern I used in the Moroccan Market Tote lodged itself in my brain. It was so much fun to make, I had to use it one more time - and figure out how to make it work in rows rather than rounds. I used Lion Brand Vanna's Choice, which is a great afghan yarn with lots of saturated colors to choose from - love that! And now I can tell you for sure that it makes a very very warm blanket! Working on it while the temps dropped at night, I was as cozy as could be. And it was a fantastic movie watching pattern - once the pattern is established with the first few rows, you just zip right along!
The pattern here is written for a throw/afghan sized blanket, as that's the size I've made. Based on the throw, I've created the chart below with info to make 5 other sizes! (Since everyone's gauge is different, and the type of yarn used can affect the outcome as well, these are only guidelines - you'll need to make your own gauge swatch if you need it to be exact!) And of course, you can make the whole thing in only two colors if you like - it's all up to you!
Love the Moroccan Tile Afghan but don't crochet? Check out the Moogly Makers page to find a commissioned crocheter who'll be happy to craft it for you!

Instructions
NOTE: You will work 2 rows, first Color A (odd rows), then Color B (even rows), going in the same direction, before turning your work and starting again with Color A and then Color B.
Row 1: With Color A, ch 142, dc in 5th ch from the hook (counts as dc and skipped ch). Ch 1, dc in the same ch. (V stitch made) *Skip 2 ch, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next st. Repeat from * until 2 ch remain. Skip 1 ch, dc in the last ch. Remove the hook from the active loop, and pm (place marker) in loop (this is to keep the stitches from coming out). Do not turn. (140 sts, or 46 V sts)
Row 2. With Color B, STDC in the ch sp of the 1st V of the previous row. Ch 1, dc in the same ch sp. (V st made) [Dc, ch 1, dc] in ch sp of each V st to the end. Remove the hook, pm, turn. (138 sts, or 46 V sts)
Row 3: With Color B row held in back, replace hook in active loop of Color A. CSDC, ch 1, dc between the 1st and 2nd st of Row 1 (between the dc and the first V st). [Dc, ch 1, dc] between the V sts of Color A/Row 1 (NOT in the ch sps, enclosing Color B/Row 2 in each st) until 1 V st of Row 1 remains. Dc between the last V st and the last dc st, ch 1, dc in the last st. Remove hook, pm, do not turn. (141 sts, 47 V sts)
Row 4: Inserting the hook into the ch sp of the 1st V st of Color A, replace hook in active loop of Color B and pull it to the front. CSDC, ch 1, dc in the same ch sp. [Dc, ch 1, dc] in ch sp of each V st to the end. Remove the hook, pm, turn. (141 sts, or 47 V sts)
Row 5: With Color B held in back, replace hook in active loop of Color A. CSDC. [Dc, ch 1, dc] between the V sts of Color A until 1 V st remains. Dc in the last st. Remove the hook, pm, do not turn. (140 sts, or 46 V sts)
Row 6: Inserting the hook into the ch sp of the 1st V st of Color A, replace hook in active loop of Color B and pull it to the front. CSDC, ch 1, dc in the same ch sp. [Dc, ch 1, dc] in ch sp of each V st to the end. Remove the hook, pm, turn. (138 sts, or 46 V sts)
Row 7: With Color B row held in back, replace hook in active loop of Color A. CSDC, ch 1, dc between the 1st and 2nd st of previous Color A row (between the dc and the first V st). [Dc, ch 1, dc] between the V sts of Color A until 1 V st remains. Dc between the last V st and the last st, ch 1, dc in the last st. Remove hook, pm, do not turn. (141 sts, 47 V sts)
Row 8: Inserting the hook into the ch sp of the 1st V st of Color A, replace hook in active loop of Color B and pull it to the front. CSDC, ch 1, dc in the same ch sp. [Dc, ch 1, dc] in ch sp of each V st to the end. Remove the hook, pm, turn. (141 sts, or 47 V sts)
Row 9 - 181: Repeat Rows 5 - 8. (This is the Row # for the throw size, see chart above for last row number of other sizes, see below for color sheme)
Want to use the same color scheme I did? Change colors after every 20 rows, so that the previous Color A is set aside, and the previous Color B becomes the new Color A. To attach the new colors, use the STDC st and work in the pattern. The very last "Color A" will be used for one extra odd numbered row to finish off the blanket. Here's the color scheme chart for how I did it.
Color Scheme Chart
Rows 1 - 20: Odd A, Even B
Rows 21 - 40: Odd B, Even C
Rows 41 - 60: Odd C, Even D
Rows 61 - 80: Odd D, Even E
Rows 81 - 100: Odd E, Even F
Rows 101 - 120: Odd F, Even G
Rows 121 - 140: Odd G, Even H
Rows 141 - 160: Odd H, Even I
Rows 161 - 181: Odd I, Even A
I finished the blanket off with a simple sc border, which used up the leftover bits of yarn from when I changed colors. However, I did need a tiny bit extra of Color I/Scarlet - less than 10 yards! - to finish it off, as that last odd-numbered row left me a little short. If you plan on making a border out of one color, you may need to purchase an extra skein.
Let me know if you have any questions! I know that this is a lot of information, but I want to give you all the info I have so that you can make your own custom Moroccan Tile Afghan, in the size and color scheme you desire. Just read through it all, then jump in, and I think you'll see just how easily it does come together!

Your blanket is amazing, I really wish I hasn't seen it. I don't have room or time for another project, but it's beauty is calling me and telling that I probably have all the yarn I need to get started. My daughter saw it too and feels that it is indeed a blanket especially for her. Oh well better go and print off the instructions. Thank you for sharing such a gorgeous blanket.

😀 Um, sorry? Or mwahahah! lol! And thank you!

Do you have a video on how to do this pattern? I can't seem to get it right, and it is so frustrating, when it is so pretty.
Tamara Kelly
I don't yet, but it's on the agenda - I hope to have it up within the next few weeks! If it helps, there's a closeup of the basic stitch pattern on the Moroccan Market Tote page. I considered charting it but because of the overlapping stitches it would be a mess.
karolj14564
Wow, thanks so much for not only the pattern but the sizing! There are so many times I see a pattern and have a hard time trying to make it larger!
Karolj14564
Just want to thank you for not only sharing this beautiful pattern, but also including the different sizes. Too many times I've become frustrated trying to figure out increases for a pattern! I can't wait to make this!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you, so glad you like it!
Adamandia K.
Love the close values in each of the sections. Is Vanna's Choice fuzzy does it pill? I have a jacket pattern I'm trying to find acrylic yarn for....
Tamara Kelly
It's not fuzzy, and I haven't seen any pilling myself. And thank you!
jen s
i am in the middle of this project. The tutorial is priceless and so far it's looking great! But I have to say that the quality of the yarn isn't the best in my opinion. It does seem too pill a little, and i'm only half way through. The colors are beautiful though and the yarn is pretty inexpensive.
Tamara Kelly
Sorry you're having trouble with the yarn Jen! I'm glad you're enjoying the pattern though. 🙂
Rhondda Mol
Love this!! Another beautiful design Tamara 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Rhondda!

Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Julie!
Katherine Mills
wow - love this! Thankyou for sharing 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Katherine!
Janet Fischer
Love this, and I want to make it in 2 colors only. How much of each color would I need for a throw?
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Janet! It's 3060 yds total, so 1530 yds of each for 2 - or 9 skeins of each color if you use Vanna's Choice. 🙂
Lisa
It says easy, but I'm lost when it comes to row 3. Is there a video on how to start and do the third row?
Tamara Kelly
There's a video for the whole pattern, linked in the bullet pointed notes above, under the yarn and hook. 🙂
Marrie
it is seriously...remarkable, exceptional, amazing, astonishing, astounding, marvellous, wonderful, sensational, stunning, incredible, unbelievable, miraculous, phenomenal, prodigious, spectacular
Tamara Kelly
Thank you, merci, gracias! 😀

eres bienvenido Tamara!
Amee
I feel like i am doing it wrong. The front looks right, but the back seems like a big blob of my color B. I think i am flubbing it. Hope someone gets a video up soon, bc i cant wait to make this!
Tamara Kelly
I'll get one up asap!
Amee
Lol. Ok. Can someone post more pics of the pattern? I have got to be messing it up, because row 5 doesnt work now. Lol. I'm sorry! I feel so dumb!
Tamara Kelly
Don't feel dumb! It's a hard pattern to put into words, and I'll be doing a step by step photo and video tutorial very soon. But in the meantime, there's a closeup of the stitch pattern here that might help you visualize it: https://www.mooglyblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Moroccan-Market-Tote-Stitches.jpg

Thank you Helena!

Hi Tamara,
I love this afghan. I wish you had a tutorial. One question is can I use the standard chain 3.
Tamara Kelly
Tutorial is coming ASAP! 🙂 You can indeed use the standard chain 3 if you prefer. I just wrote it the way I made it so the pattern would match the photos.
Julie Corbisiero
This blanket is so beautiful and I love the colors Tamara! You are always creating such wonderful projects. I saw it on link & share wed.

😀 Thank you so much Julie!
Kyla
I LOVE this afghan! I'm making a blanket for my mother-in-law who will be having back surgery in January. I was going to make your Blackberry Salad Striped, and now I can't decide!!! Do you have a favorite? Mine will be in several shades of purple as that is my MIL's favorite color 🙂
Thank you so much!!
Kyla
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Kyla! Right now the Morroccan Tile is my favorite, just because I made SO many Blackberrys when I was doing commissions LOL. I think the Moroccan is a little lighter weight overall too, depending on the yarn you use. Plus it has a LOT fewer ends to weave in (depending on how many colors you use of course). 😀
Kyla
Then I think I will just have to do the Moroccan!! I'm going to use Caron simply soft so hopefully it turns out well. I might need to wait for your tutorial 🙂
Kyla
Ok. I'm on row 3. When you say "enclosing row 2" I'm assuming that my row 3 should be crocheted into row 2, is that right? If so, since row 2 is behind row three and I'm working into the V stitch of row 1, how do I "enclose"? Or am I not understanding?
Tamara Kelly
Row 3 is crocheted between the V sts of Row 1. So you insert the hook between the V sts of Row 1, and then yo with the yarn from behind. This traps Row 2 within the stitch itself. Does that help at all? I'm putting together a photo and video tutorial for this week if you're still confused!
Rachel
Thank you! I was stuck in the same place and this completely cleared it up for me.
Tamara Kelly
Oh good! Glad to hear it. 🙂
Kyla
Yes, I think that helps. Thank you for your reply! Looking forward to your tutorial!
Kristine
I love this blanket! I'm making it for my sister in law's baby shower. I did row 3 wrong about 4 different ways but your last reply to Kyla helped clarify it for me....thank you!! I can't wait to see my finished product.
Tamara Kelly
Oh good! Glad it helped! I've got a tutorial coming out today, sorry I couldn't get it ready sooner!

Ok, I think I found my blanket pattern. This is soooooooooo gorgeous!!!

Lisa S
This blanket is absolutely amazing! I can't wait to try it! So, with the larger blankets I'm assuming you would need more than 2 skleins of each color, do you know approximately how many you would need for the queen or king size?
Tamara Kelly
Thanks Lisa! The color scheme I used had 9 colors, 18 skeins total. Each skein has 170 yds. Since the queen will take approximately 8370 yds, that's about 50 skeins. To get 9 colors, you'd need 6 skeins of each color. Doing the same math for the king, you're looking at 7 skeins each of 9 colors.
Valerie Blair
I am in love with this blanket & think I need to make it. I have very different colors though, more on the pastel side and quite a variation. Do you think it would work with this pattern? I've been trying to find just the right pattern for this stash...
Tamara Kelly
I think that would be lovely! I've seen a whole variety of color schemes now and they all look good so far!
Hilde
Hello Tamara,
I like this stitch. I am trying to use it for a pillow, a square one. So I need a flat square. I tried to find out how to do the corners, but I can't seem to figure it out. Can you help me out?
Regards,
Hilde
Tamara Kelly
Hello Hilde! I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. It would essentially be a tiny blanket, no?
Hilde
Yes, like a tiny square blanket. But made as a granny square. Starting in the middle and growing with each round. So each round I have to make 4 corners. Preferably I want to use the same pattern for each corner in each round.
Tamara Kelly
I don't currently have instructions for how to work the Moroccan Tile stitch from the center out in a square, I'm sorry!
Tess
I just love love love this! Is on my 2014 to-do list thanks for sharing this! 🙂
Cher
In order to make this look like the Moroccan cowl I'd just use those colors, right? I know that I'd need a large amount but I fell inlove with those colors!
Tamara Kelly
You've got it! 😀 It's just a matter of which yarn you use - the stitch pattern is the same.
baterista9
Looking forward to trying this for my charity donations.
OFF TOPIC: EFFECT & AFFECT are easily confused.
http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/affect-versus-effect
Sarah
Tamara, I have just finished this afghan and have really enjoyed doing it (especially as it works up so much more quickly than my last project) but I am stuck for a border. You say you did a single crochet border. Was this all the way around and if so how did you get it to fit with the double crochet stitches? Thanks for your lovely patterns.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Sarah! I did do sc all the way around, working 2 sc around each dc on the sides. 🙂
Kate
I love this pattern.
I have been crocheting for over 30 years and consider myself a pretty good crocheter. However, there are some patterns that I just cannot get right without counting every single row. If I don't count I get wavy edges and have to tear my work apart. I crochet to relax. I don't want to have to count every row to make sure I got it right.
I completed about 2 feet of this afghan before I gave up. I was getting frustrated every time I picked it up. I"d get a headache instead of getting relaxed as I have to count every single row.
Yes, I watched and read the tutorial. I'm not getting something!
Can anyone help me with this as I'd love to make this afghan (and others that I've been avoiding because of the counting)?
Thanks in advance.
Kate
Tamara Kelly
Hi Kate! I'm sorry you're having so much trouble! I'm not sure what else I can provide beyond the photo and video tutorials. 🙁
Kate
Well, I'll watch the tutorial again and see if I missed something.
Thank you. Beautiful afghan!!!
Kalna
I started the Moroccan tote and stitched the 54 fdc. When I made the v stitches I only ended up with 20. Did I not do enough fdc in row 1? Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Kalna! It sounds like maybe you missed Round 3?
Phyllis bachmann
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE AFGHAN! AS A BEGINNER CROCHETER I FELT VERY COMFORTABLE MAKING THE AFGHAN WITH YOUR INSTRUCTIONS & VIDEO.
SINCE I'M NEW. . . WOULD LOVE TO MAKE THE QUEEN SIZE USING THE 9 COLORS. BUT, I CANNOT FIGURE HOW TO CALCULATE THE QUANTITY OF EACH COLOR I NEED. CAN YOU HELP? THANKS!!
Tamara Kelly
I'm so glad you like it Phyllis! The queen size calls for 8370 yds, so divided by 9 you'd need about 930 yds of each color. 🙂
Diana
I think that this would make a great stash-buster, too.
Tamara Kelly
Very much so! 😀 I'm so glad you like it!
Jo
Hi there, I love this pattern and have done up a few different swatches to see which colour combinations I like best. Unfortunately, I seem to be making at the end of some rows where I end up with an overlap of colour B across rows. The dots end up joined instead of separate. Do you know what I might be doing wrong?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Jo! It's hard to say without seeing it. Have you looked at the tutorial?
Cathy
I am ending up with the same issue as Jo. It appears the last "tile" in Row 2 and 4 are crossing into Color A. It looks like it happens when the loop is pulled through to the odd rows.
Tamara Kelly
Yes, if you look closely at the photos you'll see this is part of the pattern.:)
Cathy
I seem to be having a "gap" between the rows, so I feel like Color "B" is not "nesting" but it looks like an entire separate row. What could I be doing incorrect?
I'm looking so forward to making this afghan.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Cathy! When you work the second row of Color A, it should squish the Color B row down a bit, filling the V in the first Color A row. If this isn't happening, it may be that you are using too large a hook for your yarn choice, so that the sts are too "big" to nest down in there. I hope that helps!
Christa bradforD
I would love to make this into a bathroom set in cotton yarn. Do you think it would work? How would I adjust for sizes?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Christa! I think it would work great! Just add something non-slip if you're using it as a rug. 🙂 You can base the width off the sizes given, or Use a multiple of 3 +2, +2 for the starting chain. 🙂
Alexis
I really want to use this pattern for my daughter's sampler afghan, but I don't understand the multiple. What does 3+2, +2 mean, is that different than 5+2??
Tamara Kelly
Yes! It's a multiple of 3 (6, 12, 300, etc), plus 2, plus 2 more for the starting chain. So basically, a multiple of 3, and then add 4. The reason the 2s are separate, is because your stitch count will be the multiple of 3 plus 2 - the 2 for the starting chain plus the last of the other chains will count as the first stitch.
Sara
I've been in love with this afghan since I saw it, but I wasn't feeling ambitious enough to try it until I finished the Midnight Moroccan Cowl, Hat and Mitts. I'm working on the afghan now with no problems. In fact, I've found everything I've tried on your website so far to be very easy with the video tutorials. Thank you so much!
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm so glad to hear it Sara! Thank you so much!
Tammy
Tamara,
WOW!! Thank you for the beautiful afghan and great tutorial! My daughter is going back east to finish college and she wanted me to make her a warm throw/afghan for her dorm in a variety of her school colors - I have been looking all over for the right one until I saw this, showed it to her and I can barely wait to get started!! Now to just figure out all the color combos. Thank you again!!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Tammy, I'm so glad you (and she!) like it!
Tammy
🙂 We're super excited. It looks SO warm and perfect too.
Kate
I have been looking for a pattern for my mother's 60th birthday present. I wanted to make her a special afghan that would allow me to use the birthstone color of each of her grandbabies. I think this pattern is perfect with the way one color blends into the next, allowing me to flow from one child to the next, essentially. I am excited to get started and can't thank you enough for posting this!!
Tamara Kelly
What an amazing gift to make Kate! Thank you!
Jimmye Dorman
Hi Tamara,
Thank you for so generously sharing so many of your beautiful patterns. You make it so easy to achieve really nice results.
I love this stitch, but have to admit this pattern intimidated me when I first saw it. I have made two of the totes and a little lovey blanket for a friend's granddaughter. I am not so intimidated now. It looks so much more complicated than it is actually is to make, my favorite kind of pattern.
I want to make one for my daughter-in-law for Christmas in four colors. I would like to do smaller sections of the colors so they repeat again in the length of the blanket. I have my yarn, but cannot seem to get the color change to work in my sample. It occured to me in my sleep (Oh geez!) that you are probably using a second skein of the color when you go back across. I kept trying to make it work using only one skein.
In your blanket, you have purple "grout" and red "tiles. Then you have a row of red "grout" with red "tiles" as you transition to red "grout" and pink "tiles". In that row of double red, am I correct that you are adding in another skein of red so you keep working in the same direction?
I appreciate your help and you!
Thanks again, Jimmye
Tamara Kelly
Hello Jimmye, and thank you!
To switch colors I didn't add a new skein, unless I happened to be out of yarn at that point. When it was time to switch, I'd finish with an even numbered row (color B/the filling), so that both yarns are at one side of the blanket. Since it was time to turn anyway, I'd go ahead and remove Color A and work Color B as the new grout line, then add Color C as the new filling before turning again. Does that make sense?
Elizabeth Greschner
I love this pattern but my struggle is switching colors. I'm wondering if there will be a tutorial on how to switch the colors.
Catherine
I love this pattern! I'm working on it now, following your color scheme as well since it's gorgeous. I did want to ask if there was any way to get a little more step by step for the color changes, namely switching color B to color A before incorporating the new color.
Thanks so much for the help and the pattern!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Catherine! Thank you! It sounds like maybe you're looking for the tutorial? click here!
Cat
Thank you so much for sharing this gorgeous pattern. I stumbled onto it just in time for winter! Here's hoping to having enough yarn lol! I'm very grateful for the extra sizings as well!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Cat, I'm so glad you like it!
Gloria-Rose Puurveen
I can't tell you how much time I spend looking at patterns, looking for something just that special that I can't resist making it. I think this is it. Simple, elegant, colourful and cozy. wow! I can hardly wait to make this one. Thank you for sharing.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Wow, thank you so much Gloria-Rose!
ChristinA Stenstream
I was wondering do you have a pattern for the reverse blanket ? That kind of looks like this. .
Also I cants help but make this blanket and I'm broke so only two colors lol. But hey I'm sure it will look good
Tamara Kelly
Hi Christina! I'm not sure what blanket is the reverse blanket? Maybe this one? And thanks! 😀
Laura
Hello! I absolutely love this pattern, but I am trying it with Red Hearts Super Saver yarn, which is worsted. I also thought that Vanna's was worsted, so I used a K hook as well even though I didn't use Aran weight. The beginning fews rows appear to have a lot of empty space between stitches and rows, however, so do you think it is because of the differences in yarn or should I switch to an I or J hook?
Thank you so much!
Tamara Kelly
They're both considered worsted/aran, and should work up about the same. However, you and I might have different tension levels which would play a role as well! If you like the fabric you get when you move down a hook size better, then definitely go to a smaller hook. 🙂
Shane
I'm doing the same color and pattern as the picture. I've finished row 20 with the color B. What color does row 21 start with?
Tamara Kelly
Row 21 is also color B, as per the chart in the pattern. 🙂
Lindsay
I am wanting to start this blanket, but three of the colors I can only find in "Vanna's Choice Baby" and not is the standard "Vanna's Choice" brand. Does that Matter?
Tamara Kelly
It doesn't matter a bit - they're exactly the same, just more colors! 🙂
trisha
I have had someone ask me to make this beautiful pattern in only 3 colors. Have you done that before? I have not done this pattern before so I am trying to think of the best way to come up with 3 colors only and how to figure out the yarn amount I need in each color....any advice?
Shane
I can only find Lion Brand Baby's Choice Sweet Pee, Duckie, and Goldfish. It's a light weight yarn and Vannas Choice is Medium weight. What should I do?
Jimmye
I made a Morroccan Tile Tote bag using baby yarn and Caron's Simply Soft. They were similar weight and it worked out perfectly.
I think the yarn weight being the same or similar is probably more important than same brand.
Tamara Kelly
You can make this blanket in whatever yarn you like, but it is important to stay consistent across the blanket - either all light weight or all medium weight. Which you go with is up to you!
Diane
This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Diane!
Kat
Thank you very much for this pattern, finally a pattern for using up all those leftover half and 3/4 skeins from projects that looks great. I used black for the background color and set up using several colors across the rows to create a stained glass window effect. My sister loves it and says she gets lots of her friends wanting to know where to get one, but the downside is that it can't be duplicated since it was all leftovers, LOL. Keep up the good work!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Kat!
Susie
Hi Tamara I'm making the Moroccan tile afghan. I have tried to do the CSDC but not getting it. So my question is when I get to the end I chain 2 then do I chain one more then make another DC?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Susie! You can always substitute a ch 3 for the CSDC. 🙂
Susie
Hi Tamara I was wondering if you have any good tips when coming to each end before you turn. The middle looks great but the ends are messed up. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Tamara Kelly
Have you watched the video? That might help? Click here for video
Susie
Tamara I have watched it over and over but just can't get the ends and turns. For some reason I always have a problem on the turns. I will keep watching maybe it will sink in.
Thank you
Tamara Kelly
Hi Susie! It can be tricky for sure. Note that the ends do look a little different from the rest of the fabric.
Robin
I am wanting to make this afghan for my sister so I have read your posts and studied the photos as well as watching the video numerous times (all very helpful!). I have even done a couple of test swatches to make sure I understand the stitch. (Discovered I can't to the CSDC and need to the regular chain 3.) I think I have the stitch down pat but it seems like my last "tile" in some of the rows isn't connected all the way. Ex: The last color B of the even numbered rows. This seems to kind of barely hang in there, that it's not totally connected. So one side flaps a little. Is this how it's suppose to be? I really tried to see this in the video but am not able to tell for sure. I just want to make sure I've got the pattern down right before I launch in to the full afghan. I'm a complete beginner, having just started crochet this year so not a whole lot of experience on my part but I have completed a granny stripe afghan and am midway through a larksfoot afghan. Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
If you look at the photos of the afghan you can see the last tile is indeed a little different. 🙂
Robin
If you are referring to the left side of the blanket in the picture above that's not the side I have a question about. It's actually the right side of the blanket. They do look a little smaller but I just can"t tell for sure. It seems like the beginning and end of a row is what gives me to most concern when I first start a project. I would wish for close up photos and extra time in videos of the start and end of the first few rows. Thanks anyway for you response and for making a good tutorial.

Thankyou so much for the Sizing Chart. I do have two questions.
First there is no size for a Standard or double bed. Do you know what that would be?
Also are those dimensions for top of mattress or allowing for some to hang down and cover outside edge of mattress? I love this afghan and plan on trying it some day when I can afford the yarn. Thankyou so much for your website. It is so much help to beginner crocheters.
Louisa
Tamara Kelly
Double and Queen are pretty interchangeable. They should hand over the edges a bit. 🙂 Thank you!
LIsa
I am so obsessed with this afghan! I haven't crocheted anything for myself in years and this one is going to be just for me! I'm making this a twin size in the same color scheme, but I'm having trouble figuring out how many rows of each color to make it even. I figured that I would need to actually make a twin size 253 rows (252+the one scarlet row) but just can't get the math right to how many rows of each color. Can you help me with this? Thanks so much for sharing your talent!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Lisa, and thank you! To know how to divide it I would need to know how many colors you are using. If it's 9 colors, as in the original, then it would be 28 rows of each color. 🙂
Lisa lacy
Thank you! That's what I figured, but my math just wasn't working right. I'm excited to get started on this! Thanks again!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Happy to help! I hope you enjoy the pattern - it's pretty simple to memorize once you get going!
gwynne
I absolutely love this pattern. I am making it as my "Dorm Blanket" for college next year! Thank you for your generosity!
~God bless~
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Gwynne, I'm so glad you like it!
Regina nowatzke
Hello! I want to make a queen blanket how do I know how many rows to make? Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
The Sizing Chart, above the instructions, includes rows. 🙂
Ruth
I was thinking about using the stitch pattern for a scarf. Do you think it would work?
Tamara Kelly
Absolutely! In fact, if you wanted an infinity scarf, the pattern is already available - click here!

I love this pattern!
I tried to do a few sample swatches to make sure I am understanding the pattern. I noticed a huge gap between the rows. I tried a few times with different hooks. Even after nesting, there is a gap above the "tile" in Color B.
How is your tension? Should I hold it really snug so that everything is sort of smashed together. Or should there be a gap?
When connecting Color A down and nesting Color B, is the tension really snug?
I LOVE this pattern. Just want to figure out the issues with the gap above color B.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Jen! There will be a little bit of a gap, but most of it should disappear when the second color smooshes it down a bit. If the gap is bigger than you like, you can try a smaller hook! 🙂
Jen S
Thank you for the quick reply! I have tried a few different sizes. Looking at some other pictures I think there is usually a bit of a gap above Color B and the Color A right above it (where it's smooshing). I'm using medium weight yarn - "I Love This Yarn!" from Hobby Lobby. Wondering If I should try 6.5mm (I think the biggest I used was 5.5 or 6.0). I assume the stitches could be bulkier that way.
I love this pattern. I'm determined to make this happen.
Thank you so much for your in depth patterns and tutorials. I love it! It's so helpful!
Tamara Kelly
🙂 Thank you Jen!
Debra Paget
Tamara, if I make this in a baby blanket size (thanks for providing stitches and rows for different sizes), would I still do 9 rows before starting the next color or would I do the pattern with a different number of rows per color? Thanks!!
Tamara Kelly
Hello Debra! If you wanted to have as many color changes, then you'd want to do fewer rows before changing colors. Divide however many color "sections" you want to make into the total number of rows to see when to switch for your chosen side.
Debra Paget
Oops, I meant 20 rows not 9 (I was thinking of 9 colors!!). Thanks
Tamara Kelly
No worries, I knew what you meant! I hope! 😛
Debra Paget
You did understand my question...thank you!!!!
Amy
Hi Tamara
Thank you for this pattern. I am nearly done with this baby (ok it was put aside for months but I'm back at it). The video tutorial was priceless. Did you switch colors on each section for the border? I can't tell from the picture.
Thank you'
Tamara Kelly
Thank you! Yes, I used the "mesh" color for each section to make the sc border. 🙂
Susan
This is gorgeous - thanks for sharing! I hope to make it soon!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Susan!

I love this pattern and have started working on it. I get a few rows in and then rip it out again. Is there a difference between rows 3, 5 and 7 above? When I watch the linked video, it seems that they are the same but I'm getting confused by the written pattern.
I love the look of this pattern and am hoping to get it this done for a friend's birthday in March.
Tamara Kelly
They are a little bit different on the ends, because the V's are offset from each other every 2 rows. The video shows it best. 🙂
Dawn
Thank you! I will give that a try tonight.
dj hixson
beautiful pattern, BUT, it is far from an easy should be intermediate
Tamara Kelly
Thank you! Was it rated Easy somewhere? I agree, it's probably an intermediate pattern. 🙂
Paula
I just bought the Caron Cakes and I am thinking about going back and getting enough to make this blanket using "Rainbow Sprinkles" I love this and now I have a reason to buy more "Cakes" lol
Tamara Kelly
I bet that will look amazing! 😀 Thank you Paula!
Marie-Claire
Hi Tamara,
I'm being overly ambitious and am learning to read a pattern with your beautiful, beautiful afghan pattern. (I'll be doing multiple shades of earthy tones, I'm really excited!)
However, because of the skeins I want to buy and the size of the bed, the size of afghan doesn't quite fall into the regular ones. I'm going to make my own size, but ... I can't figure out the math to create a custom starting chain size!
You say 3+2, 2, is the math to create your own size of afghan for this pattern, but as a newbie, I can't understand how that quite works. That equation should equal Ch58 for the premie, Ch112 for the baby, Ch142 for the throw, Ch184 for the Twin and Ch256 for the Queen, so ... n(3+2)+2 works for the premie (8x(3+2)+2=58), but not for the baby blanket (15x(3+2)+2=107 and 16x(3+2)+2=114, so I already don't know how to get to 112 ...). 20x(3+2)+2=142, so it works for the throw, 26x(3+2)+2=184 works for the Twin, but 36x(3+2)+2=254 is missing two chains to reach the number you have for the Queen size (256).
So - I've clearly misinterpreted the equation.
Could you quickly show me in numbers how you reached the numbers for a two or three of the sizes you have up to help me figure out how to do it to figure out a custom size for myself that'll work for the pattern?
Sorry for the crazy math questions!
(Help!)
(Thank you!!)
Marie-Claire
ARG BRAIN! Why do you complicate everything??
Ignore me. I think I just got it.
A multiple of 3, and add 4 at the end of your multiplying.
18x3=54+4=58
36x3=108+4=112
46x3=138+4=142
60x3=180+4=184
84x3=252+4=256
Yes?
Tamara Kelly
Yes! You've got it! 😀 Yay!
Marie-Claire
Oh thank God.
Elizabeth Greschner
Hi, I know I commented earlier but I watched tutorial and I understand how to do it with two colors but I don't know how to switch the "grout" and "tile" colors. I tried but it looks truly wonky and was wondering if you could put a tutorial or picture up how to switch the colors like your current blanket out. Thank you so much!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Elizabeth! If you look at the photos you can see there is a stripe between each section where the "lattice" and "dots" are the same color. So to switch, you would finish a Row 8 repeat with Color B, then turn and follow the instructions for Row 5 still using Color B, without switching. Then, bring in Color C as in Row 2. Does that make sense?
ELIzabeth
Yes it does. Thank you so much!
Tamara Kelly
Oh good! I'm so glad to hear it! 😀
Susan Bojarski
I just emailed a pattern to myself so I can print it just for my own use. I hope this was okay to do. I don't know about twitter and all those other options. The pattern looks so beautiful...I am just a beginner crocheter and hope I can do it. I am actually halfway done a blanket made up of squares...really don't know what to do as some of the squares are a bit different in size and hope joining them won't be a problem. Love this site...so many possibilities.
Ps. My email is in lower case but for some reason it will only let me enter my email in all capitals.
Tamara Kelly
Hello Susan! That's fine! 🙂 Printing a copy for your own use through whatever method is easiest for you is totally okay. Thank you! 😀 And just FYI, email addresses aren't actually case sensitive at all.

I just figured out how to save patterns in my Crochet Patterns. This is a wonderful sight that I think will really help me learn how to crochet and with the free patterns it's wonderful!! At first I didn't really know how to navigate within the sight but figuring be it all out now. Sorry the first pattern I loved I emailed to myself and maybe you are not supposed to do that. Thanks again.
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm so glad you're finding your way around! Thank you!
Barb Valentin
Help! Just came across this pattern. Love it. Want to make it. Just one problem....I can't find these colors in Lion Brand Vanna's Choice to save my life: Wild Berry, Sweet Pea, Duckie, or Goldfish. Can anybody out there tell me which colors these might map to in their current color palette? Many thanks!!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Barb!
Unfortunately, several colors have been discontinued since I designed that pattern. Electric Purple, Pistachio, Lemon, and Mustard are probably the closest available currently.
Barb Valentin
Thank you so much for the quick reply, Tamara! This is a beautiful pattern and can't wait to make it!
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm happy to help! Thank you!
Liz
Hello! I'd love to make this blanket! I have Vanna's choice in raspberry and Premier yarn candy shop in skittles. I'd like to use only these two colors... the raspberry for the "grout" part and the candy shop for the "tile" part. I'm REALLY not good at figuring out how much yarn I need! I see the total yardage to make the throw size but have no idea on how to estimate how much yarn I need for the two parts. (Hopefully I'm clear enough in my explanation!)
Tamara Kelly
Hi Liz! If you are using just two colors, you can just divide the total amount by 2 - there isn't much difference between them. 🙂 Thank you!
Megan
Hi there! I would like to make one of these for a queen-size bed, but I do most of my crocheting while traveling, and a giant afghan is not very easy to cart about. Do you have any suggestions for how I could make it in smaller pieces and assemble it afterwards? It would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Megan!
Great question - I've struggled through a few car afghans in the lap now, I feel your pain (and lots of air conditioning haha!). I think this would be a really interesting pattern worked up in squares that are joined together. Perhaps 12" x 12", or whatever size suits you - however you want to divide up the queen size. Each square could feature it's own two colors, or they could gradient down... I hope that sparks some ideas for you! 🙂 If you do make it like that, please send me a photo, I'd love to see it!
Megan
Awesome! Thank you!!
Teresa
I know I'm a bit late to the game but I absolutely love this. I've made two market bags and I just finished up a baby blanket.
Thank you so much for the fantastically written pattern.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Teresa! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Louise
Hi,
I saw this pattern and love it, but I would like to make this with seven colors. To make sure I have the right number of rows per color scheme without doing a partial repeat of color schemes, I plan to do 27 rows of each. Are there rows I repeat to get the additional tile and grout before doing Row 8 to get the color change?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Louise! Row 8 isn't the color change, that's described the paragraphs below the written pattern. 🙂
Louise
I watched the video and read through the pattern. It sounds like color changes can happen at any time, is that correct? Do you recommend changing them at a particular row?
Tamara Kelly
For the color striping shown above, I have included the color changes, but otherwise they can be wherever you like. 🙂
