Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue and Favorites
- US- K, 6.5mm hook (Furls Fiberarts Hooks Recommended)
- 205 total yds Aran weight yarn in 2 colors
- Color A: 115 yds Red Heart Soft (Black)
- Color B: 90 yds Red Heart Boutique Midnight (Tropical)
- 2 stitch markers
- Finished Size: About 7" tall and 28" around
- Gauge: Horizontal: 4 sets of nested Vs = 4" wide; Vertical: 6 sets of nested Vs =4" tall
- Want it longer? Add a multiple of 3 sts to the first row. For instance, a good length for an infinity scarf would be 216 FSC. If you prefer an unjoined scarf worked in rows, start with the 216 FSC and then work the rows as shown in the Moroccan Tile Afghan Stitch Tutorial.
- Click on the name of the video tutorial you need: FSC - foundation single crochet; Joining Foundation Stitches to Work in the Round; CSDC - chainless starting double crochet; STDC - standing double crochet; Seamless Join; Moroccan Tile Stitch in the Round
Round 1: With Color A, FSC 84. (Alternate: ch 85, sc in the second ch from the hook and each ch to the end.) Join with a sl st to the first st without twisting. (84 sts)
Round 2: CSDC (Alternate: ch 3), ch 1, dc in the first st (V st made). *Skip 2 sts, [dc, ch 1, dc] in the next st. Repeat from * until 2 sts remain. Join to CSDC (or top of ch 3) with a sl st. Remove the hook from the active loop and place a stitch marker in the loop to secure it, so it won't pull out as you work the other color. (28 V sts or 84 sts)
Round 3: With Color B, STDC (Alternate: join with sl st and ch 3) in ch sp of 1st V st of previous round. Ch 1, dc in the same ch sp (V st made). [Dc, ch 1, dc] in each ch sp around. Pull active loop and working yarn of Color A to front of fabric, then join with sl st to STDC (or top of ch 3). Remove hook from loop, place marker in loop so it doesn’t pull out. (28 V sts or 84 sts)
Round 4: Replace hook in active loop of Color A, CSDC, ch 1, dc between first and last V of the row before the previous round (NOT in the ch sp, but between the Vs). [Dc, ch 1, dc] between the V sts of round before the previous round around, enclosing previous round. Leaving working yarn and active loop of Color B behind fabric, join with sl st to CSDC. Remove hook from loop, PM in loop so it doesn’t pull out. (28 V sts or 84 sts)
Round 5: Insert hook in the ch sp of the first V st of the previous round. Replace hook in active loop of Color B and pull it through the V to the front, leaving working yarn behind. CSDC, ch 1, dc in the ch sp of that first V. [Dc, ch 1, dc] in each ch sp around. Pull active loop and working yarn of Color A to front of fabric, then join with sl st to CSDC. Remove hook from loop, PM in loop so it doesn’t pull out. (28 V sts or 84 sts)
Round 6 - 21: Repeat Rounds 4-5 eight times, breaking Color B and finishing it off after Round 20.
Round 22: Continuing with Color A, ch 1 and sc in between the first and last V sts of the previous round (at the join). *Skip the next st, work 2 sc in the ch sp.** Skip the next st, sc between the V sts. Repeat from * ending last repeat at **. Break yarn and use seamless join to finish off. (84 sts)
And that's all there is to it! I have at least one more pattern in store for this stitch, so stay tuned!
Penny
Ohmygosh. I am sure this is one of the most gorgeous cowl's I've ever seen. I must make this! Thank you so much!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Penny!
Gillian McM
This is lovely, thank you so much! I have a question: how do you wear a cowl like this so that it keeps you warm?
I mean, how is it different from a scarf that you wrap around you?
Tamara Kelly
I like to tuck it into the top of my coat a big, and then have the rest up over my mouth when it's very frigid, or more relaxed when it's just chilly. The great thing about cowls as opposed to scarves is that they don't blow away in the wind - something we have a LOT of here lol.
Gillian McM
Great, thanks so much, Tamara!
Kandi
oh this is beautiful! a must make for sure....curious if you plan to do a hat pattern in this Moroccan stitch?
Tamara Kelly
Definitely - next week in fact! 😀
Kandi
YAY, cant wait!

Tamara Kelly
Hi Pamma! If you use the green Print Friendly button that will remove all ads and extras. 🙂
JUDYHOOTIEBIRD`
I love your pattern and use of colors. Wearing it must look like wearing a stained glass window around your neck. I can't wait to try it out.
Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you!
Clotilde/Craftybegonia
That is simply gorgeous! I love the contrast of colors against the dark background, it highlights them.
janie
Going to hobby lobby in the morn. may just have to give this a try!! Thanks for the pattern and tutorial ♥♥
robin
Now I have an excuse to buy more yarn.
Jen
For an Afghan the size of about 46" x 58" how much yarn would I need? That would be with 3 colors..
Tamara Kelly
Hi Jen! You'll find yarn estimates for the afghan here: https://www.mooglyblog.com/moroccan-tile-afghan/
Helen
Didn't think I was much of a cowl person til I saw this one,,, a magnificent piece of work!!!! With these nippy temps and breezes that have invaded the Peach State this will be put to good use... Thanks so much for sharing this with us
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Helen!
Dawn Maccione
THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL ON THE FOUNDATION SC. SO SIMPLE, I LOVE IT.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Dawn!
Nancy
I would like to know the number of chains for this cowl pattern. Is it the same number as for the other" way? I love the pattern but I prefer to chain the base row. Thank you.
Tamara Kelly
The chain instructions are included in Round 1! 🙂
Amanda
I am having so much trouble with this pattern..... I got to round 5 and noticed that it wasn't looking quite right. After my color A I went on to my color B round and crocheted in the V stitches right? Not the space between. Then, I went on and went back to color A. I ended up with my color A initial row having the big gaps between V stitches open and "holey" I guess. Like I missed a step or did something wrong...... I even watched the tutorial video 🙁
Tamara Kelly
It's hard to say without seeing it, but perhaps you need to go down a hook size? There are some holes there, certainly, but if they're too big a smaller hook might work better for you.
Nicky
Love This Pattern! It Inspired Me To Make Matching Fingerless Gloves And Ear WarmeR Headband. I've Been Raiding My Yarn Stash to Find Coordinating CoLors To Make More!
Ann
Can the exact same yarns be used to make an afghan?
Tamara Kelly
Absolutely! There's an afghan pattern in this stitch here: https://www.mooglyblog.com/moroccan-tile-afghan/
Ann
I forgot to say thanks in advance!
Jimmye dorman
Tamara,
I saw this pattern on AllFreeCrochet.com and immediately knew it had to be yours. That Moroccan Tile pattern from the afghan and bag is so distinct and gorgeous!! I can't wait to finish my current projects so I can try the bag, but I might tackle the cowl first since it is only 2 yarns. Actually, I will probably make the bag in two colors also.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful patterns,
Jimmye
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Jimmye!
Angelica
OMG! There's a cowl pattern as well, and exactly how I like them: a bit long so it doesn't get too near the neck, more an adorment than a wamer. Many thanks again, Tamara
Connie
Hi, Thanks for the tutorials on csdc and the stdc stitches. Always like to learn stitches that make patterns look nicer.
Tamara Kelly
😀 So glad you enjoyed them Connie! Thank you!
Connie
Hi, I finished this cowl and it's great. Would like to make an ear warmer and am wondering if I should use the slouchy hat pattern and modify it or is there a pattern that I haven't seen. Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Connie! There's not an earwarmer pattern at this time, so modifying the hat would be the best bet. 🙂
lelah
Love this but could someone tell me what I am doing wrong that the inside of mine doesn't look like yours? It is mostly just the B color covering the inside?
Tamara Kelly
It sounds like maybe you're working the stitches in front of each other, rather than around each other? Maybe watching the video tutorial will helo?
Sarah
I wanted to thank you for sharing this pattern! I made a bunch of these in infinity scarves as gifts for Christmas. They were a hit! This pattern is perfect to change up the yarns and colors to suit each individual. I used Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable as color B for a lot of the scarves and Lion Brand Heartland for color A (very soft and fluffy combination!) I also made them wider by making it so there were 12 rows of color B. Perfect. Thanks again 🙂
Tamara Kelly
😀 Those sound amazing Sarah! Thank you!
Laurie
I would like to make this into an infinity scarf as well. How many initial chains did you do in the first row?
Thank You!
Uma
I'd like to make a twisted scarf instead of a cowl. How many chains would I have to start with and how many skeins would I need?
Tamara Kelly
That depends on your measurements Uma, I would have to redesign and remake the scarf to give you an exact amount.
kaROL
Hi! I loved this pattern and the stitch. Loved it so much I made a hat and a scarf. You can see them here in my blog post http://eltallerdearacne.co.nf/?p=105
Thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern!
Tamara Kelly
Very pretty Karol! 🙂 I hope you enjoyed the hat pattern as well!
Alice
I love this look ! Now I'll make the boot cuffs. Same as the mittens leaving out the thumb opening and measuring the calf . Thanks
Tamara Kelly
Thank you!
Meg
thank you for your wonderful patterns. I look forward to them and use them very ofern
Regards,
Meg.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much! 😀
Shirley
Absolutely love this pattern. I did 3 double crochets instead of the v stitch which gave it a more puffed look cannot wait to complete the hat.
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm glad you're enjoying it! Thank you!
April Schmitz
Tamara,
LOVE this pattern and want a similar look to what's shown, but the yarn you used has been since discontinued per the Red Heart website. Any suggestions for a replacement colorway that would work? Help!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you April! I would try Unforgettable or maybe even the new Super Saver Ombre for some cool effects! 😀
Jeanie
This pattern is wonderful. Since the original patterns were posted in 2013 and 2014, I hope it is not too late to post. You are so patient with the questions and answers. Learning a new stitch and technique keep me on my toes. Thanks for all you do!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Jeanie! ♥ I really appreciate it!
JiG
hiya, I know this is old now, but on the offchance you are still seeing comments... I am making a set of Moroccan midnight accessories foe a dear friend who suffers with the cold. Any chance at all you could magic up a slippers pattern using this stitch? I'd gladly pay!
Tamara Kelly
Hi JiG! I try to read all the comments! 😀 I like the slipper idea, I'll let it roll around in my head and see what I can come up with!
Alison
I sure hope you see these comments still! ❤️ I am making this as an infinity scarf, which I’ve never made before. At the end of the FSC 216 you recommend for an infinity scarf, would I twist it before joining?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Allison! You could if you wanted a mobius, but most don't! 🙂
