And that's it! I hope you enjoy the Madly in Love Hat pattern as much as you enjoyed the scarf - and now you can make a matching gift set! I mixed it up with the button on this one for a slightly different look, and I think the hat stands on it's own as much as it matches the scarf.

What a beautiful hat pattern! I especially love the braiding and the decoration on the brim.
Many thanks for sharing your awesome crochet talents! 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Lee Ann!
Julie
I love this hat! I cannot wait to make it for Christmas presents. Let me just say that without you I would have never learned how to crochet. Thank You for showing me how amazing crochet is.❤️❤️
Tamara Kelly
<3 Thank you so so much Julie!! That made my day!
Julie
Hi How would I edit this pattern to turn it to a beanie?
Tamara Kelly
Just skip a few of the rounds that are worked evenly. 🙂
julie
I'm having a little difficulty understanding the gauge. Could you explain it?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Julie! I'll try! 🙂 The most basic stitch pattern for this hat is "puff st, ch 2" repeating. So if you count 8 puff stitches across in a row (with 2 chs between each), it should be about 4". Does that help?
Nancy Blendl
Love this hat, going to start it shortly. Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Nancy!
Maria Vazquez
I love that you made a matching hat! I purchased four beautiful buttons for my Madly in Love Infinity Scarf. I wound up with one lonely button. You have found its purpose! It will get to be proudly displayed along with its companions. Thank you <3
Tamara Kelly
Perfect! 😀 Thank you Maria!
Miranda
I wish there was a diagram with this. I dont know why written patterns mess me up so much, but it always takes me a few tries.
Julie
Gorgeous! I absolutely love this! Where ever did you find that button? I'm in love with it! Thanks for sharing!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Julie! I got the button at my local JoAnn Fabrics!

Very nice!!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you!
Brigette Fancy
LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Already have two of the cowls made, now I'm making the matching hats! Thank you for sharing!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Brigette!
Kristine
Love, love, LOVE this and the cowl! These are my next projects for ME! LOL ? Was wondering about the possibility of matching wristlets. Please, pretty please. I can crochet pretty well but still working on developing my pattern making skills.
Tamara Kelly
I've added it to my to-do list! Thank you Kristine! 😀
MicHelLe
I'm so very confused - I've been trying this pattern and froging it all day. I'm trying to figure out how to increase - I've tried adding more than one puff stitch in each chain two space. And that didn't work- any suggestions?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Michelle! The increases are built into the written pattern - I'm a little confused by your comment.
Michelle
Okay - so here is what I did.
What the pattern says:
Round 3: Ch 2, *puff st in the next st, ch 2, (puff st in next ch-2 sp, ch 2) twice; rep from * 4 times; join with a sl st. (36 sts inc chs)
How I did it: In every chain 2 space I put two puff stitches. and each round after that I added an additional puff stitch to the chain 2 space.
I know it's wrong, because I can see from the picture.
Tamara Kelly
You put one puff st in the puff st, then ch 2, then put a puff st and ch 2 in each of the next 2 ch-2 sps.
Michelle
Okay - I'm going to try it again. I love the look of this hat !
Anne
I've been putting a puff stitch in each puff stitch and in each chain space. Is that wrong too? Also, what does st inc ch mean? I know what each means individually but not grouped like that. Thanks! I really do love your patterns, just having trouble with this one.
Tamara Kelly
You only put a puff st in the puff st for an increase, so not every stitch. The part in parentheses at the end, where it says "(x sts inc chs)" is the stitch count for the round - I specify that it "includes the chains" so that people don't just count the puff stitches, which would be a natural thing to want to do. 🙂
Anne
Got it now - thank you!
Eva
This would be the answer to my question, but it still doesn't make sense to me.
If you put a puff st in each of the next ch-2 sps does that mean a puff stitch is being skipped?
The way I understand the pattern is to puff st, ch 2 twice in the same ch-2 sp.
Tamara Kelly
Yes, you would skip over the puff stitch. 🙂
Tina
This is how I would write row 3: Ch2, *puff st in the next st, ch 2 (puff st in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip next puff st, puff st in next ch 2, ch 2) twice; rep from * 4 times, etc.
Judie
8 pattern stitches = 4 inches????
Impossible!
Tamara Kelly
The pattern repeat is "puff st, ch 2" - 8 repeats of that in 4 inches.
Michelle
By George, I've got it! Thank you for your patience and help!
Tamara Kelly
Hooray! 😀
Elaine
Love, Love this Hat ! Changed where the braids begin but was easy from start to finish.
Thanks for sharing, my daughter lives in a very cold climate and has asked for hats and scarves for Christmas can't wait to make
matching scarf.
Till next time.
Elaine
Tamara Kelly
🙂 Thank you Elaine!
Michelle
I'm new to the chrochet game so this might be a dumb question, but could I use worsted weight yarn for this pattern? Or would I be making life to difficult by Doug that? Thanks!!
Tamara Kelly
You can indeed! It might turn out a bit bigger though, depending on the yarn and your gauge. But making the smaller size instructions should help that!
Annmargaret
I have been working on this hat now for 9 hours. I have frogged it so many times. Now it is just looking like a granny square in order for me to get the right st count at the end of each row. I am just not getting this pattern straight at all!
Tamara Kelly
I'm sorry you're having trouble Annmargaret. 🙁
Laura
Thanks for the pattern....I downloaded it and unfortunately it is way too difficult for me. (so I just deleted it) I'm just a newbie. It is an adorable hat and I really wish I could make them. You are so talented...and you are so generous to offer this pattern for free.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Laura! I'm sure in time it will seem easy! 🙂
Betty
Thank you for your lovely hat pattern. I am making an adult small and frogged all the puff stitch rows from 2 to 10. My counts were coming out right but it was turning out to be a granny square. Will the pattern eventually round itself off? Also, how many loops should be on the hook before you complete the puff? I am using Vickie Howell's Sheepish by Caron. The puff stitches are in variegated pinks, gray and white. The ribbing and braid with be hot pink. I am gifting this to a friend undergoing chemo. Thanks, Betty "IKroshay"
Tamara Kelly
Yes, the pattern does round out as you go. 🙂 There is a tutorial for the Puff stitch linked in the pattern. Sounds very pretty!
Colleen
Every time I see one of your patterns, I start and finish a new wonderful item. Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Colleen!
Eva
I have made multiple attempts at this pattern and it really makes no sense. Everything goes wrong by round 3. If I follow the instructions you have I don't wind up with 36 stitches like it says. I wind up with well over 36 stitches.
I'm thinking it's going wrong with (puff st in next ch-2 sp, ch 2) twice.
Susan
I can't get the rounds to work out. It says to puff stitch in the next stutch AND the chain 2 space - and chain two after each puff. That's too many stitches. It lays flat for a while, then begins to curl. I want to make this so badly, but I have tried no less than a dozen times and can't get it to work out. Please help! TYIA.
Tamara Kelly
Which round specifically is giving you trouble?
Susan
The very beginning. It appears to me that the puffs are only in the chain 2 spaces, but the pattern says to put them in the next stitch AND the chain 2 space, plus chain 2 after each one. Hence, way too many stitches. I have tried it so many ways, I finally gave up and messaged instead. If I only put them in the chain 2 spaces, it starts to look like a tube. Help!
Eva
Susan, it took me a bit of frustration before messaging, too. Assuming you're talking about round 3 and up, the correct pattern is to puff stitch in the next stitch, puff stitch in the ch-2 sp, skip the next puff stitch, puff stitch in the next ch-2 sp. This is for round 3.
It's the same sequence rounds 4 to 8, only you skip one more puff stitch and puff stitch in the next ch-2 sp an extra time each round, if that makes sense.
Carol
Thanks to all the question & comments & many many starts & restarts I finally figured it out, it's really quite easy . I made it in burgundy , very pretty.,
Tamara Kelly
🙂 I'm glad to hear it, thank you!
Mischelle
I made the cowl and have been SO excited to make the hat -thank GOODNESS for the comments because this simple project has literally taken hours and hours and HOURS! I can't get round 3 to work for nothing ... God willing ... I will finish this within the next 24 hours without having to take it apart AGAIN! BIG SIGH! I love it or I wouldn't keep trying.
Mischelle
The most confusing pattern I've done in a while... SO THANKFUL for the comments! With the comments I was able to complete the matching hat for a cowl! I will SO make both of these again ... LOL!
Clotilde/Craftybegonia
Beautiful hat, love all the different details! Pinned.
Eva
I have already made 5 hats and am about to make matching hats for myself and my best friend. My 5th hat I tweaked a bit and did not make so slouchy and I didn't do a braid. It was on this hat I realized your written description of the puff stitch is different than your video. The written version says to pull up 7 loops, while the video says 9. So the first 4 hats I followed the pattern and the 5th I followed the video.
Just wanted to throw that out there, haha.
Tamara Kelly
The Puff Stitch doesn't have a specific number of loops to pull up - it just depends on the pattern. 🙂 I'm glad you're enjoying the pattern!
TABETHA
Please help. I love the look but I have restarted 8 times and still haven't figured out the pattern. I am fairly new to crochet and get confused with the directions.
Tamara Kelly
I'll try to get a video tutorial up soon!
Joyce
The green print button is missing on the patterns. I'm using my phone. In the past I've not had any problems.
Would you please check on this matter?
Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Joyce! It doesn't work on the mobile version of the site, I'm afraid. I'll contact my mobile site company and see what they can do!
Anna
Hello, love your patterns! Just wondering where did you get your glass heads? Those are so cute! Would definitely love to get one 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Hi Anna! I got mine from Pier 1, and it's also available on Amazon (affiliate link): http://amzn.to/1TRXwwq
Tania
Hi, I'm having a little trouble with round 9 when it says 'Sl st into next ch sp' is that the chain 2 from the previous round because when I do it, it looks a little weird. I really love this design and would love some help
Tamara Kelly
Yes, it's the ch 2 from the previous rnd. 🙂
Erica
What a beautiful pattern! I especially love the braided detail.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you!
Tina
Tamara, I LOVE your patterns! They are beautiful and fun to crochet. You are very talented. Thank you so much. 😀
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much!
josie
For the brim , what is the numbers in (121 ,133 ,145) I am dumb founded
Tamara Kelly
Those are the stitch counts for that row with the different sizes. 🙂 They are (Child; Teen/Small Adult; Large Adult) respectively.
Morgan
Love this pattern, I'm in the process of making it for my daughter and plan on doing the gloves and scarf to go with it! 🙂 I am wanting to make the braid go all the way around, do you have any suggestions on how I should go about doing that? I'm making the child size. Thanks for any advice!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Morgan! I think in Row 1 of the Brim you'll need to "extend with FDC" for many more stitches!
Stephanie prevost
I’m trying to make the large adult size and am struggling with rd 9 - I’ve sl st over to the chain 2 sp, ch 2 the puff st into the next ch2 sp? And then just continue with puff then ch2 4 times then puff into the puff on previous row? Does that even make sense? Lol I want to figure this one out. Thank you ❤️
Tamara Kelly
Hi Stephanie!
Here's the breakdown for Round 9:
Sl st into the next ch sp and ch 2,
Work a puff stitch into that same ch sp, then ch 2,
In the next 3 ch sps, work a puff st followed by a ch 2,
Work a puff st in the next stitch followed by a ch 2,
*In the next 8 ch sps, work a puff st followed by a ch 2,
Work a puff st in the next stitch followed by a ch 2,
Repeat from * until there are just 4 ch sps left,
In the last 4 ch sps work a puff st followed by ch 2,
join to the first puff st made.
Does that help?
Wanda
I just finished your scarf pattern and wore it to work today. Love, love it and so happy you share your awesome talent. Going to try the hat sometime soon and anything else you publish. Beautiful yarn art!!!!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Wanda!
MaryAnn Sines
I've had this pattern printed out since 2015 and just located it scrunched in a bag with yarn! I was looking to crochet a hat for a grandchild and daughter; this is perfect. They are aunt and niece and live in different states. Thank you. I will begin tomorrow.
Tamara Kelly
♥ I hope you enjoy making it!
