There are lots of gorgeous free crochet afghan patterns, and though the crochet edging might come last, don't think that means it isn't important! While I'm a big fan of simple sc and dc borders for letting busier afghan patterns shine, there are hundreds of beautiful and interesting border and edging patterns that are ready to take center stage and dress up and blanket you make. And of course they're not just for blankets - you can put a pretty edge on just about anything! So without further ado, here are my favorite 10 free crochet edging patterns! UPDATE - Now there are 16!

Perfect timing for me! I love all the edging you showed - especially the chicken one 🙂 But I am most thankful for the second sentence of your post "While I’m a big fan of simple sc and dc borders for letting busier afghan patterns shine" I am working on two busy afghan patterns and have been struggling with what border would look best. Your comment just jumped out at me and made me realize I need to keep it very simple on these particular afghans. I am, however, going to try to find a nice simple pattern to use that chicken border on! All of the borders are just beautiful.
Tamara Kelly
😀 So glad Penny! I think it's all about balance! The border is like jewelry - the busier the outfit the simpler the jewelry, and vice versa.

Penny, where can I find the pattern for the Owl Baby Blanket?
Can you please assist me?
stitches'n'scraps
omg, love the butterfly one! I'm with you though, sometimes simple is best. My favorite is a reverse single crochet - gives just enough of an interesting texture without stealing attention from the main pattern 🙂
Tamara Kelly
One of my favorites too! 😀
Tasha
Wow, thank you so much Tamara!

Perfect timing on this! I'm about to send a granny afghan in the mail for a birthday gift but it has felt unfinished since I "finished" it yet I couldn't decide on a border.....definitely going to add one now. So many to choose from! The pom-pom is calling my name!!!! 🙂
Fiona
Oh gosh, I am just finishing off a large throw with a variation on the pom pom edging you have listed. However, Jay of Rainbow Knits is my heroine, she claims she can't crochet very well and came up with that stunning hearts border!! I agree with the above poster, often plainer brders are all a more complicated throw needs. Fiona x

I love all of your hard work. Thank you for keeping me updated on all of the new and fun things out there in crochet.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thanks so much Andrea!

I absolutely love the hen one! I'm glad you included it, I had never seen it before. It looks like there would be a lot of ends to weave in, but the finished product is totally worth it...if I ever make an afghan, I would edge it with this. 😉
Tamara Kelly
It's just so funny, isn't it! Yes, lots of ends, definitely for someone special!

These are great - thank you for sharing them!
The darling butterfly edge fires up my sparkle & giggle circuits!
The heart trim says, "Make me now!"
Think I'll use them both in a happy sampler type blanket.
FYI - I have some projects on Craftsy & Ravelry - search for "MissDeal"
Next, I would really like to see a variety of ruffled and fancy flourish borders for shawls and wraps. Anybody have good links for those?
Thanks again for the inspiration!

I am so glad that you posted this! I am self-taught and I just finished my first baby afghan for a one year old little girl and these edging patterns were just what I needed to make this blanket really special. I started with the Lacy V's and Picots but I didn't really like the look of the picots, I wanted something a little more substantial and bigger, so I decided to add on the ruffle edging and it made it absolutely PERFECT! I will have to share a picture of the blanket on your Facebook page. I also used one of the alphabet patterns you posted a while back to make a K for her first initial! 🙂 I visit your site all the time and watch the Facebook feeds daily for any new posts you might put up. I am constantly saving url's for later dates if there is something I find that might be useful down the road!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Renae! I can't wait to see it!
Donna

love your patterns but i had a question for u if u wouldn't mind? I am making a crochet ruffle for a receiving blanket, but i am not sure how long the ruffle should be. The blanket is 30" by 40" could u please help me?
Tamara Kelly
The ruffle will need to be 140" long, but with some extra to get around the corners - how much extra depends on the width of the border. Is that what you're asking?
Leona
The chicken is adorable.
