The Moogly Crochet Alphabet has been a big hit, and I've loved seeing some of the fun things people have done with it - from birthday banners to yarn bombs to theater sets! However, one of the letters was a little trickier than the others - and wouldn't you know, it's the very first one. So here's a quick video demonstration of how to crochet the letter A!
How To Crochet the Letter A
Written Instructions for the Letter A
Row 1: Ch 30, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, then sc in the next 12 ch. Sc2tog over next 3 sts, skipping the center st. Sc in remaining 13 ch. Turn. (27 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 12 sts. Sc2tog over next 3 sts, skipping the center st. Sc in remaining 12 sts. Turn. (25 sts)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in the first 11 sts. Sc2tog over next 3 sts, skipping the center st. Sc in the next 5 sts, leaving remaining sts unworked. Ch 4, turn. (16 sc, 4 ch) (Note – this ch 4 starts the horizontal “cross bar” of the A.)
Row 4: Sc in the back hump of the 2nd ch from hook, sc in remaining 2 ch. Sc2tog, working into the same st as the last sc of Row 3 and the next unworked st (sts #5 and 6 of that side of the A.). Turn. (4 sts)
Row 5: Do not ch. Sc in the next 4 sts (the sc2tog and the 3 sc from for 4). Turn. (4 sts)
Row 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in the 1st st, sc in the next 3 sts. Sc2tog, working into the last st of the last sc2tog and the next unworked st (sts #6 and 7 of that side of the A). Sc in the remaining 4 unworked sts from Row 2, working back down to the bottom of that side of the A. (11 sts total) Break yarn and finish off. Use one of the ends to sew the loose end of the crossbar to the other side.
I hope that seeing the video and instructions together has cleared up the confusion! Let me know if there are any other letters in particular that give you trouble. And keep sharing your pictures - I love seeing Moogly patterns out in the world!

I'm having a little trouble with the K, I can't seem to get it right. I'll keep trying.
Tamara Kelly
Letters are tricky, as the yarn just takes off in a new direction at times.

I finally figured out how to get that R done, I was crocheting up or down the wrong side when connecting the first arm. I was able to look at the picture and it helped instructions make more sense.
Tamara Kelly
Oh good! I'm so glad to hear it. It's harder to write patterns for things that twist and turn in unusual ways!

All of your letters are really pretty. I really like the S! Do you have any other tutorials beside letters? I'm only 11(about to be 12!) and I love crocheting.
Tamara Kelly
I have lots of patterns and tutorials! The green ribbon at the top of the page is a menu, with links to the pattern page with all my free patterns, and the tutorials page with all the video tutorials. Thank you so much! 🙂

I really like your letter patterns. Could you do a tutorial for every letter? That would be really helpful. I want to do the letter S! I love to crochet and I am only 11(almost12!). Please do other patterns.Your instructions are easy to follow.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you! I don't think I'll be able to do a video for every letter, but there are written patterns for the other letters here, and most have charts as well: https://www.mooglyblog.com/the-moogly-crochet-alphabet/ I'm adding more charts as time allows. Congratulations on learning to crochet!

Very good tutorial! 🙂 all the graph's and the instructions, very clear! 🙂 I made the A and I found easier to "sew" de cross bar while crocheting her! Like you did in one of the legs of the A, with the sc2tog!
I also made 2 pieces of each letter and sewed them together, as an "amigurumi letter", stuffed!
Thank you very much for the pattern
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm glad you enjoyed it Malu! Thank you!

Thank heavens you made the video for this! Thank you!
Sarah
Hi, thank you for your brilliant video :). Many aplogies, I am a complete amateur, I was wondering if you could possibly to help me or point me in the right direction to make an 'A' that is roughly 1.5 inches in size?
I've made cute booties for my 7 month old little girl and would love to personalise them further by adding the letter of her first name :).
Many thanks :).
Tamara Kelly
Hi Sarah! Thank you! I think the easiest way to make it smaller would be to use thinner thread - baby or lace weight, maybe even thread - and a much smaller hook! 🙂

Could you pls do a video for the letter "B", iam having trouble reading and understanding your written pattern.
Thank you I love all your turtorials I have learned alot from watchig you.
Tamara Kelly
I'm sorry, I'm not doing any more letter videos at this time.
Cecelia
Thank you for this alphabet and also the video on the letter A. That helped my understanding since I didn't have yarn and hook in hand.
Tamara Kelly
🙂 I'm glad to hear it, thank you!
MARIE
How can youyou download, the letters patterns I'm trying to download the pattern
Tamara Kelly
Hello Marie! You can use the green Print Friendly button, there's a tutorial at https://www.mooglyblog.com/print-pattern-use-print-friendly-button-moogly/ 🙂
Valerie
I love the letters! Do you have patterns to make them double the size? Would like to spell out baby's name to put on the wall above his crib.
Tamara Kelly
I do not, but I'd recommend using a super bulky or jumbo yarn and a bigger hook! 🙂
Becca
Do you have a video for the letter M? I’m having trouble after row 4.
Tamara Kelly
No but I can try to talk you through it! Where are you running into trouble?
Cindy Stewart
Tamara do you have the graph for letter "A" & maybe one for "S" now time has passed & hoping graph maker works! Thank you in advance & for your hard work in all these letters, numbers, punctuation, etc!
Tamara Kelly
I am hoping to retool the entire alphabet soon. Unfortunately, the graph maker is no longer supported. There's a video for A, and I'd be happy to try to help walk you through any issues!
Cindy Stewart
Thanks in was just wondering as I was saving these! 🙂

I'm struggling with the A...I have 14 chains at the end after the first sc2tog. I've followed along with the video, restarted, but I keep having 14 left after the sc2tog. What am I doing wrong??
Tamara Kelly
I'm sorry, it's so hard to guess without being able to be there. My best guess would be that you are either forgetting to skip a st in the middle of the sc2tog or that you might be miscounting the beginning - "sc in the 2nd ch from hook, then sc in the next 12 ch" equals 13 sts before the decrease.

For letter A says video just directions video does not eork
