Make one to match the nursery or in your favorite colors - it's up to you! This is a very thick, very warm blanket, just the right size for a car seat or lap. Plus it's got a great, triangle shaped edging for even more color and interest!

- US-J, 6.0 mm hook (Furls Fiberarts Recommended)
- 650 yds Aran Weight Yarn, as 325 yds each of 2 colors (Red Heart With Love in Black as Color A and Daffodil as Color B shown)
- Finished Size: 23" x 23" with edging
- To make a larger blanket, increase the starting chain by multiples of 5.
Instructions:
With Color A, ch 77.
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. *Ch 5, skip 4 ch, sc in the next ch. Repeat from * to end. Pull loop up a bit or place st marker in it, and remove hook. (15 loops made)
Row 2: With Color B, join with a sl st to the opposite side of the starting ch, in the first sc made in Row 1. Ch 3, skip 1 ch, [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] in the next ch. *Skip 2 ch, sc, and 1 ch, and work [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] in next ch. Repeat from * to end, working a dc in the last sc of the row (the opposite side of the last sc from Row 1). Pull up loop and remove hook. (15 shells made)
Row 3: Put hook back in working loop of Color A, ch 3 and turn. Folding work together so that the top of Row 2 is behind the top of Row 1, work [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] through both the ch sp of Row 2 and ch 5 loop of Row 1. Repeat [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] in each ch sp and loop to end. Dc in the last sc from Row 1. Pull up loop and remove hook. (15 shells made)
Row 4: Put hook back in working loop of Color B, but do not turn work. Working behind Row 3, ch 1 and sc in same st. *Ch 5, sc in between the shells of Row 2 (not in the ch sp, but in between the first and last dcs of the two shells). Repeat from * to end, ending with a sc in the top of the ch 3 from Row 2. (15 loops made)
Row 5: Keeping hook in Color B, ch 3 and turn. *[Dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] through both the ch sp of the shell row and ch 5 loop. Repeat [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] in each ch sp and loop to end. Dc in the last sc from the same colored row. Pull up loop and remove hook. (15 shells made)
Row 6: Put hook back in working loop of Color A, but do not turn work. Working behind previous row, ch 1 and sc in same st. *Ch 5, sc in between the same colored shells. Repeat from * to end, ending with a sc in the top of the ch 3 from the same colored row. (15 loops made)
Row 7: Keeping hook in Color A, ch 3 and turn. *[Dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] through both the ch sp of the shell row and ch 5 loop. Repeat [dc 2, ch 1, dc 2] in each ch sp and loop to end. Dc in the last sc from the same colored row. Pull up loop and remove hook. (15 shells made)
Row 8: Put hook back in working loop of Color B, but do not turn work. Working behind previous row, ch 1 and sc in same st. *Ch 5, sc in between the same colored shells. Repeat from * to end, ending with a sc in the top of the ch 3 from the same colored row. (15 loops made)
Repeat Rows 5-8 until the baby blanket is square, approximately 21" x 21", ending with an even numbered row. (Last two rows will be joined in edging.) Do not break either yarn.
Edging Instructions:
Round 1: Using the color you finished the last row with (most likely Color B), ch 1 and turn. Sc around edges of blanket, catching both layers/colors in each stitch. On the top edge, sc through the ch 5 loop sp and through each dc and ch sp (5 sc per shell and loop). Work an extra sc in each corner. Stitch counts should be:
- Along top and bottom: 77 sc on each
- Along the sides: 61 sc on each side
- Corners: 1 sc in each corner
- Total count: 77(x2) + 61(x2) + 1(x4) = 280 sc made
- If you have trouble getting the side st counts to match the pattern, just make sure that the total stitch count for this round is a multiple of 4.
Join with a sl st to the first sc of the edging. Do not break yarn.
Round 2: Put both working loops on hook, and hold both yarns together to work this round. Ch 1 and sc in the 1st st. *Skip 2 sts, dc 2 in the next st. Ch 1, and sc around the post of the 2nd dc just made, working down the post towards the blanket. Sc in the next st. Repeat from * around, ending the last repeat with a sl st or seamless join in the first sc of the round. Break yarn and weave in ends.
Now, if you've used the Red Heart With Love yarn or similarly sized skeins, you'll have a bit of each remaining after finishing your baby blanket. What to do with those leftovers? I've got just the project for you - the Go Team Colors Reversible Baby Hat!
What are your favorite team colors? Would they look good in a blanket, or do you have other colors in mind? Let me know what you think in the comments, and as always, if you spot an error let me know!

I love this pattern - I am making one now but shouldn't the loop and shell count be 15 with 77 chains not 25?
Tamara Kelly
Whoops! Right you are! Thanks for the heads up Cathy!
Kayla
If I wanted to make this thinner (for a scarf) would I decrease the initial chain by multiples of 5 as well?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Kayla! Yes, you're correct!
cassie
I love this pattern, i am currently making it for my son, with light and dark blue colors, he is completely obsessed with Thomas the train so that is the color scheme. But as i looked through some of your things on here, you are very talented and have great tips and such, Thanks so much for posting things like this
Tamara Kelly
You're welcome - and thank you cassie!
Abbey
Thank you for this lovely pattern post. I had started a blanket just like this using a different pattern, which I of course lost! However, I was lucky to find your pattern to finish it off! I especially like the edging using both colors! Perfect!
Barbara
You always have such lovely patterns. I think this one would make a great lap and hat for the game. For all us big kids!! Do you have any sizing instructions for the hat? Thanks again
Tamara Kelly
Hi Barbara! Thank you so much! There are instructions for upsizing the hat on the hat page, in the bullet points beneath the hook size and yarn info. 😀

I have started to make this beautiful blanket but can not get access to the linked tutorial at Sarah sweethearts. It gives a message saying it can only be accessed by invitation. It would be really useful to have some photos at each stage so I am hoping you might be able to contact them? Thank you
Tamara Kelly
Unfortunately I don't have access either. :/

Someone should make a tutorial on how to do the go team go blanket. It is so much easier to get down if you can see the working stitch.
Tamara Kelly
I'll add it to the list! 🙂
melissa bordelon
I am new to crochet and would really LOVE to see a video tutorial for this spectacular blanket. I just subscribed to your YouTube channel and look forward to the many awesome tutorials I saw as I browsed through the video list. Thank you for your time and dedication to teach this wonderful art to us newcomers!
Tamara Kelly
It's on my to-do list! 🙂 Thank you Melissa!
cassie
That's a good idea, it's something think about.

If I wanted to adapt this pattern to a triangle shawl starting at the tip, how do I increase. Is it as simple as adding the multiples of the pattern at the end of each row. Or much more complicated. Thanx.
Tamara Kelly
That would be up to the designer! I haven't done increases with this one.
Dawn
What a fantastic stitch! I'm going to try making fingerless gloves out of this. Now, for a trip to Hobby Lobby! 🙂

Thanks for all the free patterns you offer - you sure are prolific! Quick general question on this pattern, is there a pdf download, or would I only be able to just save the whole web page or bookmark it?
Tamara Kelly
Thank you Diane! You can use the green Print Friendly button at the bottom of the post to create a PDF! 🙂
Donna
I am struggling mightily with row 2. It doesn't make sense. Have you posted a video yet?
I'm quite experienced so not sure why I am struggling. I am winding up with twice as many shells.
Tamara Kelly
Not yet I'm afraid, I'm hoping to get to it this year.
Sarah
Hi Donna, I had trouble with this as well but managed to figure it out. Essentially you are working your double crochet shell in the middle chain of your 5 chain loops. I think the instructions should read to 'skip 2 ch, 1 sc, 2 ch... and work your shell in the next chain. After that though it was smooth sailing and a beautiful pattern!!
Sarah Lopata
Could you please do a tutorial for Go Team Colors Baby Blanket....
Tamara Kelly
I hope to be able to get to it in the new year. 🙂
SARAH
A BIT THANK YOU IF YOU GET GET A TUTORIAL DONE.....LOVE THIS PATTERN BUT NEED VISUAL AIDE.

Please, please make a video tutorial for this pattern. It would be so helpful. I would love to do a baby gift in this pattern but I just cannot get it to come out right. 🙁
Tamara Kelly
It's on my list! 🙂

I don't understand the "do not turn" instruction. How does that work? I'm not s super-experienced crocheter, please explain? And what does it mean to start color B on the opposite side? The other end of the row or....? Visuals would help. I couldn't find one of this on your site.
Tamara Kelly
Hello e! I reworked this stitch pattern and made a video for it under a different name - here's the link: https://www.mooglyblog.com/double-love-stitch-tutorial/ 🙂
