Crochet is many things. It is beautiful, it is therapeutic, it is creative. And sometimes it is very very silly. Ahem. Introducing the Get Whale Soon Tissue Box Cover!
Whale whale whale, what have we here... a whale sized summer cold? Killer (whale) allergies? Need to send oceans of love to someone to let them know everything whale be alright? Are you groaning yet?
Hopefully you're laughing! Because this is certainly one of the silliest patterns I've ever designed. But once it popped into my noggin, it just had to be! And it's been cracking me up with it's cuteness ever since. So let's get to the pattern!

TAIL INSTRUCTIONS (tail is made in two parts):
Flukes (make 2): Ch 16, skip 1st ch, sl st in next ch, sc, in next, hdc in next, dc in next, tr in next 2 chs, dc in next, hdc in next, dc in next, tr in next 2 ch, dc in next, hdc in next, sc in next, sl st in last ch. Break yarn and finish off.
Tail Stocks (made directly onto Flukes): Join with sl st in top of center hdc of one flukes. Ch 9, then working into the "underneath" loop of the ch and back toward the flukes, work 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next, hdc in next, 2 hdc in next ch, hdc in next, sc in last, sl st in same st of flukes as joined to. Break yarn and finish off. Repeat on other Flukes, flipping the second flukes over to work from the WS.
Assembly: Stack the tails on top of each other so they match up and sc all the way around, working through both layers, leaving the end of the Tail Stock that will attach to the body open. Break yarn leaving a long tail for sewing it on.
ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING:
Sew the tail to one end of the box, using the long tail at the end of the Tail Stock. Additionally, sew one to two stitches at the top to attach one end of the Flukes to the box, as shown (so it doesn't flop over). Using the 1 yd of black yarn, sew on a smile. Using scrap blue yarn, sew on the button eyes, as shown.
Thar she blows! Er... voila! I hope you enjoy making and using the Get Whale Soon Tissue Box Cover. It's a great way to put a smile on your face when you're feeling not so great yourself. And a fun finishing touch for a kids' bathroom or nautical themed decor! Stay healthy out there, and have fun!

Hi JoAnn! The video is at https://www.mooglyblog.com/bag-bottoms-crochet-tutorial/ - it demonstrates the same technique. Although in the video it's used as the way to make a bag bottom, it's the same idea - crocheting around a rectangle to work straight up/down from it for the sides.
marrie
Tamara, what is the brand name of the yarn you used?? It looks great, i want to buy the same one for good looks!! 😀
Serena

Kelly
What brand of tissue box did you use? I bought Target brand and its a good inch short all around. I've started over multiple times & am now decreasing on all sides and its waffly. HELP!!
Tamara Kelly
"Size: Made to fit a standard size box of Klennex, 120 ct tissues (9″L x 3.5″H x 4.75″W)" - Just shorten the first row to the length of the box to get a custom fit. 🙂
Fatima
HI, I would love to make this lovely whale pattern. Can i use hook 4mm for this?
Thanks
Tamara Kelly
You can, but you may need to adjust the number of stitches to fit your tissue box. 🙂
Brooke
Hey this is great, thank you for sharing! If I were to make this with an 8ply yarn instead of the 10ply Aran weight (I'm in Australia and it's hard to get nice 10 ply) how many stitches would I have to increase by do you think? I'm not really sure and thought you may be able to save me the struggle of pulling it out a few times! Thanks
Tamara Kelly
Hi Brooke - I don't know the exact number of sts - and I would recommend double checking as you go against your tissue boxes too! I know they come in a variety of sizes here, I have to imagine it's the same in Australia. 🙂
Eleanor
This is so cool! I love quirky designs - they always break the ice. I also really love whales *adding to my queue*

😀 Thank you so much!
sandy
I crochet this using red heart super saver with an h size hook and it was way too big so I dropped down to a G hook and it is still too big for the suggested size Kleenix box. I have ny stitch count perfect throughout. Help me please
Tamara Kelly
Hi Sandy! My best advice is to check your gauge - it doesn't really matter what hook size you use, if you get gauge. Otherwise, Just make sure to "try it on" at adjust the stitch count as needed as you go!
sandy
thankyou for your quick reply. I am using a 4.25 mm hook and had to do a few decreases so now I have 96 stitches around. It is fitting good now without too much puckering at top. I think I might try a 3.75 hook on my next one or perhaps try chaining 28 to start then do the 2sc in first stitch and last stitch, then do rows 14-18 so 18 sc on side., then continue to proper length. 28+28=56+18+18+4(for increase + 96. Might be a little while before I try these two options as the one I am working on now is my third attempt. I will keep you posted.

Love, love, love the whale. I'll be going to get my yarn today. He will match my little girl's mermaid tail and also my whale coffee table (my brother from Cape Cod got it for me). Thanks so much.
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Trish!
Jan Fields
This is soooooooo adorable......I'm going to make one even though I don't have anything to go with it! Hey..........maybe you can do a nautical theme to go with it???
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you Jan! What sort of nautically themed item are you thinking?
Jan Fields
Perhaps a crocheted basket with crocheted sea shells to place next to the tissue box? Or a matching toilet tissue roll cover? Set of matching towels? A net with crocheted starfish, crabs and shells? A lighthouse? I could probably think of more....=)
Tamara Kelly
Hm, I'll give it some thought! 😀 I do have these: https://www.mooglyblog.com/mermaid-towel-washcloth-set/
Jan Fields
Ohhhhh! I love these! Perfect for what I'm thinking..........thanks so much Tamara!!
Tamara Kelly
Yay, you are very welcome! 😀
