The Fates Square is a fun 6" afghan square - you can mix and match it with other squares, make a blanket with as many Fates Squares as you like, use it to make a tote - whatever strikes your fancy!

- US - G, 4.0 mm hook (Furls Odyssey recommended)
- 50 yds Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton (100% cotton; Worsted/10 ply/”4″; 186 yds/170 m; 100 grams/3.53 oz)
Main Color (MC): Purple, Tangerine, Navy
Contrast Color (CC): Lemon, Aqua, Red - Gauge: 3 Rounds = just under 3" across

Special Stitch: Spike Stitch - Made as a normal sc or dc, except the hook is inserted below the stitch indicated, one row down, and a long loop is drawn back up to height of the current round to complete the stitch. See the video tutorial linked above for more help.
Round 1: With MC, ch 4, join to ch furthest from the hook with a sl st to make a ring, ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2), working into the ring, (dc, ch 2) 7 times; join to 3rd ch of ch-5. (8 dc, 8 ch-2 sps)
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 3 dc in next ch sp, *dc in next st, 3 dc in next ch sp; repeat from * around, join to top of ch 3, break yarn. (32 sts)
Round 3: With CC, join to 1st st of Round 2, ch 1, spike sc over 1st st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, *spike sc over next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st; repeat from * around, join to 1st spike sc. (40 sts)
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in 1st st, dc in next 4 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts; repeat from * around, join to top of ch 3, break yarn. (48 sts)
Round 5: With MC, join to 1st dc of Round 4 (not the ch 3), ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in 1st st, dc in next st, spike dc over next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next st, spike sc over next st, sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, spike dc in next st, dc in next st, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st, dc in next st, spike dc over next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next st, spike sc over next st, sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, spike dc in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * around, join to top of ch 3. (60 sts, 8 chs)
Round 6: Ch 1, hdc in 1st 2 sts, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ch-2 corner sp, *hdc in next 15 sts, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in corner ch-2 sp; repeat from * twice, then hdc in the last 13 sts, join to 1st hdc, break yarn. (68 sts, 8 chs)
Round 7: With CC, join to corner ch-2 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, dc 2) in same ch-2 sp, dc in 3rd loop of next 17 sts, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch-2 sp, dc in 3rd loop of next 17 sts; repeat from * around, join to top of ch 3. (84 sts, 8 chs)
Round 8: Ch 1, sc in 1st 2 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-2 sp, *sc in next 21 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch 2 sp; repeat from * twice, then sc in last 19 sts, join to 1st sc, break yarn. (92 sts, 8 chs)
And that's that - what you do next is up to fate... or you! The last few rounds of the Fates Square are easily adjustable if you are having trouble getting to 6" - use shorter sts for Round 7, or drop Round 8 altogether if your square is too big, or make Round 8 in dc, or add another round if your square is too small!
