Many of you have asked for an overview of how the Eloise Baby Sweater is made. It takes several hours (at least!) to make one, so today I have an overview for you, which I think will answer most of your questions!
Eloise Baby Sweater Video Tutorial
As Seen in this Video (affiliate links - your purchases help support Moogly!)
- US - J, 6.0mm Furls Fiberarts hook in Purpleheart
- Lion Brand Wool-Ease Worsted (currently 20% off at Craftsy!)
While I made this video using the Eloise Baby Sweater pattern, it applies to the Girls version as well - the stitch counts and row counts will of course vary by size, but the idea is the same.
There are lots of options you can use to start the dc rows, which I went over quickly in the video:
- Ch2 (does not count as a st), dc in each stitch across
- Ch 3 (counts as first st), dc in next stitch and each remaining stitch across
- Chainless Starting Double Crochet for the 1st st, dc in each remaining st across.
You also have the option of using Foundation Double Crochet for the very first row, or if you prefer you can work a standard chain and crochet into that - as long as your final stitch count is correct for the size you are making, then you're all set!
All the links up there take you to the pattern/product/tutorials indicated, but there's one more I'd draw your attention to. The Top Down Yoke Tutorial shows the exact same style of yoke as what you find in the Eloise patterns. The difference here is that it's worked from the bottom up. But the idea is the very same - the chains create the tops of the shoulders, the skipped stitches are the armpits, and instead of increasing you're decreasing.
If the yoke is what really trips you up, you can let me know and I'll see about making a separate tutorial for that. Alternatively, you can work a standard top down yoke, and just seam the skirt to the top!
I hope this video has answered most, if not all of your questions! If there are still parts you need help with, please let me know!

HELLO again.......THANK YOU for enabeling me to make the most beautiful sweater I've ever seen in my 75 years. It graces my living room as tho it were a MONET hanging on the wall.. I can't take my eyes off it!!!! I was baffled early on by watching the top down video, which I should have avoided as- at my age, it's easy to get confused. I love the 2 new D.C. you demonstrated so well and your ELOISE sweater which I will treasure forever. No need for a response EXCEPT an address where I can send YOU a donation......PLEASE. That will complete the joy you have given me. You have my e-mail address. Linda Kane 🙂
Tamara Kelly
♥ Thank you so much Linda! No donations are needed, I appreciate your thank you!!

Monika
Hello beautiful sweater but any chance you got down to top instructions please? Confusing for me ? thanks so much
Tamara Kelly
No, I'm afraid this pattern is worked bottom up.
Alice
I'm ready to begin the yolk and I am uncertian how to gauge an even 64 sc across this kind of edge. Any ideas?
Tamara Kelly
My best tip is to break it into sections, using stitch markers! So put one at the half way point, and then 2 more at the half way points of each side, breaking it into quarters. Then work 16 sts evenly in each section. If this is too much, you can break it down further into 8ths! 🙂

Hi Tamara, Maybe I'm too new to crochet to understand all of the instructions. I've done fine until the yoke, then I'm having trouble knowing when to skip stitches to decrease. I did what I thought was best, but now the neckline is quite large and the back doesn't lay flat. For instance, there is the chain 20 for the arm/shoulder then the next row says 3dctog then dc 18. Where should I skip the two stS? I have the same question for each of the sections across. Thank you for any help you can give me.
Tamara Kelly
Hello! You don't skip any stitches to decrease, you work a decrease stitch - dc3tog. This is worked into the next 3 sts and chs.
Heather
Thank you for the lovely sweater pattern. I'm new to crochet and this is one of the first that caught my eye to try.
The parts not in video took a little trial and error on my part to get right, but the end result is beautiful.
Cheers!
Tamara Kelly
😀 I'm so glad to hear it, thank you Heather!
Renee
Love the Eloise sweater!!!! ?
I have reached the yoke part - can u do a video to get me started please?
Tamara Kelly
This is an older pattern, and there is a video for the general way the yoke is made linked in the pattern. I hope to add the yoke someday, but it's not going to be soon, I'm afraid.
Hiraa
Hi,
I was wondering if i could use some other yarn instead of lion brand wool ease as its too expensive in uk. Im new to crocheting so ill be very thankful if you could help me. Thankyou
Tamara Kelly
Hi Hiraa! You can use whatever wool is about the same weight/gauge - I don't know what yarns are available locally to you to recommend one, I'm afraid.
charity
Thanks for the video but my question is how many chain can I use for 2 years girl?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Charity! You'll find that info on the written pattern: https://www.mooglyblog.com/eloise-baby-sweater/ 🙂

I’m a little confused after i completed row two of the York with the chain , starting the next row is where the confusion starts, when i get to the opening for the sleeve (armpit) do i skip over and continue....if so then I’m not coming out with the amount of stitches (98) that are needed.
How can you get more stitches out of the previous row of only for the sz that I’m making of 62 dc and 44 ch? I just wish i could i see Just this part visual........help
Tamara Kelly
You work into the "shoulder" chains in the next round. 🙂
Sanchita Kundu
Hi. Could u please tel me the finished measurement of the sweater of 18 months. Actually I am doing it using 4mm hook. So after finishing the FDC row it seems to be vry small for a 18 months baby. Please help
Tamara Kelly
Hello Sanchita! The sizing is based on the Craft Yarn Council Standards: https://www.craftyarncouncil.com/standards/body-sizing
