Recently I got my hands on some lovely Bernat Dimensions yarn. It's a beautiful thick and thin, and it's as soft as can be! And as soon as I started playing with it, I knew just what it wanted to be - the Chunky Stripey Bag, a free crochet pattern here on Moogly!

Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue and Favorites
- US - K, 6.5 mm hook (Furls Fiberarts used)
- 215 yds Bulky "5" yarn
Original yarn is discontinued. Substitution suggestion: Red Heart Soft Essentials - 4 stitch markers (Clover Lock Ring Markers used)
- Gauge: 12 sts x 9 rows in main st pattern
- Finished Size: 9.5" wide x 7" tall (including handles)
- For stitch definitions and tutorials, please see the Crochet Abbreviations page
NOTE: This pattern is worked with 2 strands held together. It is easiest to do this by holding the ends of 2 different skeins together. To maintain the strip pattern, be sure to line up the color changes as you begin.
Row 1: Ch 24, skip the ch closest to the hook, hdc in each remaining st to end; turn. (23 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st to end; turn. (23 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1, hdc in each st to end; moving around to the side, hdc in the side of Row 1 and Row 2, continuing around, hdc in each st of opposite side of starting ch and in opposite ends of Row 1 and Row 2; join to first hdc with a sl st to start working in the round (no more turning). (50 sts) (CLICK HERE for a tutorial on going from rows to rounds for bag bottoms)
Round 4 - 15: Ch 1, (sc, dc) in the first st, skip the next st, *(sc, dc) in the next st, skip the next st; rep from * around, join with a sl st in 1st sc. (50 sts)
Round 16: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with a sl st. (50 sts)
NOTE: Place stitch markers in sts #11, 23, 36, 48; check alignment for handles, adjust if needed. The stitch markers will act as a guide in the next row, so your counts for the next row will shift if you shift the stitch markers. Individual variations in tension may make this shift necessary. The goal is to have handles wide enough for your hands, and centered at the top of the bag.
Round 17: Ch 1, sc in the first 11 sts, ch 11, skip the next 11 sts, sc in the next 14 sts, ch 11, skip the next 11 sts, sc in the last 3 sts; join with a sl st. (50 sts and chs)
Round 18: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch around; join with a sl st. (50 sts)
Round 19 - 20: Ch 1, sc in each st around; join with a sl st. (50 sts)
Round 21: Sl st in each st around; join, break and finish off. (50 sts)
I hope you enjoy making this simple and fun crochet bag pattern! It was a lot of fun to design, and just the thing for a relaxing afternoon - and a fun night out!

BEAUTIFUL BAG! LOOKS VERY EASY TO MAKE, AND FUN TO CARRY, BUT IS THERE NO CLOSURE ON IT?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Becky! There is no closure as written. Some people add closures if they add a lining, or they add a loop and button - that part is up to you! 🙂

I just love to crochet. Been crocheting since I was 10. My grand mother taught me. I am making a beautiful crocheted shawl out of blue thread. Made in one piece. back and two fronts. I am on second front. Then block it and an edging. I want to make the Moogly handbag. I just love it. Wendy

🙂 Thank you Wendy!

Thank you so much Juanita! 😀

Hi Tamara,
I was wondering if I could use 2 strands of cotton yarn together to make this lovely bag? I have some self striping cotton yarn that I would love to use.
Also, is it possible to make it a wee bit wider?
Love this little bag and I plan on making some for gifts but I know my neice would love a larger one.
Tamara Kelly
You could use whatever yarn you like, but I'd add more than two strands since it was made with 2 strands of Bulky. And if you have several strands, and a bigger hook, that will make the bag bigger too! Alternatively, you can start with a longer chain in Row 1 - any number should work. 🙂

When I printed this pattern, the whole right side of pattern
was over laped by picture ads. Do you know hoow to avoid this?
I wasted a lot of ink trying.

The Print Friendly button at the bottom of the page should remove all sidebar ads and comments. 🙂

Hi Tamara, I have made many of your projects. You make them all so easy to follow! Can I make this larger? I cant get my wallet in this size ☺️. Thank you!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Debbie! Thank you! The fun of this pattern is that you can start with any number of chains you like. 🙂 You'll have to play with it a bit to line up the handles again, but a set of stitch markers usually works pretty well! 😀

I love your patterns, but every time I try to print them (by selecting then hitting the print button) they never print out very well. First, the font is so large it took ten pages to print this pattern, and then it cut off about 5 spaces at the far right of the page. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Jeri Moulder

Have you tried the Print Friendly button? It sounds like your settings might be off somehow, enlarged?
Debbie
This is the cutest bag ever! I was so delighted that it turned out so nice.
Any suggestions for putting a lining in it?
Thank you

Thank you Debbie! Here's a great tutorial on Stitch Diva (I'm afraid sewing isn't my talent!) http://www.stitchdiva.com/tutorials/general-tips-for-knitters-and-crocheters/how-to-line-your-project

Hello,
My name is Cristy and I work for a public library and would like to share your pattern with my crochet group. We are a non-profit company and I teach a six week class that is free for the public. I would like to give the participants their own copy of the pattern to follow along as I teach the class.
Thank you for your consideration,
Cristy 🙂
Tamara Kelly
Hi Cristy! Since visitors to the blog is how I make an income, please have people visit the site and print off their own copies. 🙂
Cristy
Thanks Tamara,
I will have them print from our computers because most of the participants do not have a computer at home.
Have a good day.
Cristy 🙂

Hi Debbie! I made so many of this bag and use it as my GIFT bag. Anyone who receives it becomes so elated and excited not of the content but of the bag itself! Knowing that I made it myself, they feel they are loved.......

😀 I'm so glad you like it!
