The Chainless Starting Double Crochet method of starting rows is the perfect way to avoid the wimpy 3 ch turning chain. And the previous tutorial for it was a hit! But some of you had a question - how does this stitch work in the round? Well it works great! Let me show you how it's done.
Chainless Starting DC in the Round Tutorial
(Sorry about the title card there - Mr Moogly is out of town for his day job, I'll have him fix it asap! :P)
So essentially, it's exactly the same as working the CSDC in rows! The only adjustment you might want to make is to remove the hook from the active loop, put it back in from the other direction, and twist - as shown in the video. This replaces the twist you get when working in rows from turning your work. Then, when it's time to join your row, just sl st into the top of the CSDC sts as you would into a normal dc stitch.
I didn't make another photo tutorial, as the one on the original post shows it quite well. For a refresher, click HERE to check out the Chainless Starting Double Crochet Photo Tutorial. In the videos I'm working in increasing rows to make a flat circle. Treat the Chainless Starting Double Crochet here just as you would a normal double crochet! The same goes when you're working in even rounds, without increases. I hope that answered all your questions! Let me know what other video tutorials you'd like to see at Moogly - I love to take requests!

THANK YOU! That extra twist before beginning the stitch is exactly what I needed to make it look right.

Tamara Kelly
Yes, you slip stitch to the top of the CSDC. 🙂

Hi, I've never written to you before (don't think so anyway). I just wanted to thank you for your site and tell you that your videos are so helpful and you're a wonderful teacher.
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Barbara, I really appreciate it!
Gail
Wonderful! Just wondering if you could do the same thing for treble crochet instead of the chains at beginning of round.
Tamara Kelly
Absolutely! Just pull up a bit taller and wrap twice! 😀
Lu
So excited! I tend to use the half double crochet vs. the double crochet. Any tips on how to make it work for a half double crochet?
TIA LOADS!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thanks so much Lu! I don't have a video, but to make it work for hdc I'd start exactly the same way and just pull that last loop through all the loops and yo like you normally would. 🙂
Lu
Hi again, I can't seem to get it to work for the hdc. It works for me for the dc and the tc but I am lost when it comes to the hdc! Any step by step tips would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Lu! Unfortunately it just doesn't work as well with hdc.
Dottie
You.... complete me! <3

Karol A. Jones
Love that it blends in like it does. I can't wait to try this with my next project!
Tamara Kelly
😀 Thank you so much Karol!
TorriE
Wow!!!! I first saw this stitch last night while searching your blog and was terrified of the challenge! All though I've been crocheting for almost 14 years I only recently ( 2011ish ) started making hats and headbands ( which is my etsy business )
This chain less double crochet makes your work look flawless 🙂 I'm definitely going to be using this instead of my usual chain 3 🙂 u make it look so easy in the tutorial and it's very understandable and easy to follow 🙂 I'm a new follower of your blog as of today 🙂
Thank u so much 😉
Torrie
Tamara Kelly
😀 Oh wow, thank you TorriE!

This is just wonderful. I didn't like the look of the chain 3 in the round pot holders I'm making. I'm getting just enough experience to venture beyond the written pattern but with your tutorials its not so tough. Thanks!
Tamara Kelly
😀 That's fantastic, thank you Elana!

Thank you for the tutorial. Will this give me the invisible seam look? I've tried everything but seemed to still get the slanting look when I'm making anything in the round.
Tamara Kelly
It will still slant, but it will be much less noticeable!
Lisa
Thank you for the quick reply! I finished the hat I was working on and although I love the chainless dc, the slant was noticeable. Any tips on how to eliminate the slant?
Tamara Kelly
There are a couple things you can try. Using split or center stitches is one way (Click here for a tutorial!) or you can turn after every row, working every other row from the "inside" of the hat. Another possibility is to work the first stitch of each row in the "next" stitch, and work the last stitch in the slip stitch. However, these things only work for very simple hats, where stitches don't need to line up for a special stitch pattern.

Just tried the chainless DC for a granny square. It is amazing, looks terrific! Thank you so much!!
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much Linda, I'm so glad!
Bonnie Rubin
I'm making a first time attempt at crocheting a circle, after dc, dc, dc, dc, dc,2dc I started losing track of count and rows, so I jyst started to dc in each stitch
I lost track of my stitches but the project is about 10 - 11 inches tall
Someone suggested that I make this into a drawstring purse.
Could you direct me to find written directions to make the drawstring and how to put it in to the bag?
Thank you
Tamara Kelly
Hi Bonnie! I don't know of a particular article on how to make a drawstring, and all that google shows me is for sewing. Luckily, with crochet it's much easier! Just chain for as long as you'd like the drawstring to be, and then do a row of slip stitch or single crochet in those chains if desired. Then, weave the chain back and forth between the posts of the dc stitches in one of the last rounds. Tie or sew the ends of the chain together, and done! 🙂

Hi;
What do you do if it say's to skip 2 stitches in the chainless foundation row. I enjoyed your tutorial. It was easy to follow.
Thank you
Erm
Tamara Kelly
If you're making the foundation row using foundation stitches, then you probably won't use this technique. But you can use it instead of a ch 3 that counts as a dc, or a ch 2 (that doesn't count as a st) and a dc in the first st in the following rows! 🙂

Tamara, I love your site and read it cover to cover, so to speak. I am asking for help for a single crochet stitch to use as a finish. That is not the Crab Stitch, which I don't like at all. I seem to remember a twist has to be done somewhere in the single crochet stitch which gives a similar look but goes in the usual direction. Sorry if this is too confusing. But then I am confused. anything you can do to help will certainly be appreciated. Thank you
Tamara Kelly
Thank you so much! I don't have my tutorial for that stitch up yet, but I know what you're talking about - the Twisted Single Crochet! Here's a tutorial on another site: http://charmedbyewe.com/tutorial-twisted-single-crochet-sc/ 🙂
Grace
great information, I will be using this method,,,,thank you
Tamara Kelly
😀 Glad you like it, thank you Grace!
