Block #12: Mock Bullion Flames by KatiDCreations! (link below)
Above is the original, made in 3 delicious colors. Below, you can see my version, made with my 6 colors!
My Notes:
This pattern is free - CLICK HERE! This is a free Ravelry download - you can print the PDF. Ravelry.com is free to join and use.
Bullion stitches are... not my fave. But these mock bullions are delightful! Definitely, do NOT be intimidated - there are lots of photos in the pattern to help! The result is worth it!
Techniques and tutorials you might find helpful: Magic Circle; BLO; Join with sc; Join with hdc; Join with dc; Seamless/Invisible Join.
I came up a bit short of 12", which is not unusual for me. So to get to 12" I added an extra round of bpdc sts (extra rnd 1 below) and an extra round of sc (extra rnd 2)! But everyone's gauge and tension level are different so be sure to measure as you go! Learn how to adjust for size HERE to make sure all your squares are the same size. Remember that the 12″ is measured across and up and down – not diagonally corner to corner.
I used a Furls Odyssey hook and Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, and my color scheme was as follows – Rnd 1-2: Rose Shocking; Rnd 3-4: Lemon; Rnd 5: Radiant Lime; Rnd 6: Aquamarine; Rnd 7-10: Aqua; Rnd 11: Rose Shocking; Rnd 12: Lemon; Rnd 13-15: Radiant Lime; Extra Rnd 1 and 2: Aquamarine; Edging: Silver Grey.
To block this post, I used the wet blocking method and a Chetnanigans BlocksAll Ultra blocking board:

Thank you so much! 😀

Did you have any problems with understanding this pattern? I'm having the hardest time on almost every row... the pictures arent helping me either but how did you get row 11 to look like polka dots?? I followed it exactly and my row 11 doesnt show up at all! Please help! There isnt a video right?
Gina
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I decided to carry on and see if it works out but no! I've frogged back and I'm trying to make dance of it but. What post from round 10? Round 11 just disappears.
Tamara Kelly
Hi Gina! Have you checked out the Facebook group linked above? There's a lot of help there, and lots of successful squares!
Kelly Goodbun
OoohHHH I have some catching up to do!
Charlotte
I am having such a problem with Row 9. I have 64 stitches in Row 8. Only if I don't skip the first HDC after the corner do I have 72 stitches. . If I do skip that stitch,, I don;T have 72 stitches and then Row 10 doesn't work. Help anyone!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Charlotte! Did you check in one of the CAL groups linked above?
Charlotte Twardokus
Tamara, I am not on Facebook and I went to Ravery and didn't find any help.
Tamara Kelly
Ok! I took a look at it, and I don't see instructions on Round 9 to skip any hdc, so I think if you just work them all and get the 72 sts you need you should be fine. 🙂
Charlotte Twardokus
Tamara, in the initial instructions, it says for Row 9 and 15 to skip the first HDC after each corner. I find if I don't skip it, I end up with 4 additional stitches and too many for Row 10. I have crocheted this row so many times and can not figure it out. Sometimes instructions are so obvious, that the meaning is missed or overlooked. I appreciate the assistance you are giving me.
Charlotte
Tamara, I apologize if I am bugging you about this, but I don't know where to go from here. Can you please look at the pattern again and see if you can assist me?
Tamara Kelly
Hi Charlotte! I think you'll find the best help by consulting the designer herself, as she'll have far more insight than I will. You can contact her through her Ravelry page: http://www.ravelry.com/people/katherinedonahue
Charlotte Twardokus
Thanks, Tamara for your patience. I figured out how to do that.
Tamara Kelly
Oh good! It's not that I don't want to help, but diving deep on a pattern, it's always best to talk to the designer - she'll know it far better than I do! 🙂
Joslyn Hoalcraft
I thought all the CAL blocks are worked with an I hook. Why does this pattern say to use a J? Thanks
Tamara Kelly
Hello Joslyn!
In 2017, they've all been J, but if you've been using an I hook then I would stick with it! 🙂
Joslyn Hoalcraft
Thanks. Tamara.

I definitely had problems reading this pattern, but I muscled thru. FINALLY finished it. Hardest block for me by far. But the outcome is gorgeous!
Tamara Kelly
🙂 I'm so glad you stuck with it! And that you like the finished square of course! 😀
