If there's one thing that turning 40 has taught me (and it's taught me a lot!)... it's that a good night's sleep is worth everything. But if sleeping were a skill, I wouldn't be very good at it. I toss, I turn, I wake up to go to the bathroom and then squeeze in an extra hour or two of worry here and there, because that's modern life, right? So when Brentwood Home offered to let me try their Sleep Wellness Bundle in exchange for my honest review, I jumped at the chance - as long as I get to share the sleepy vibes with one very lucky winner!
There are dozens of fantastic options to choose from at Brentwood Home, but I decided we needed the Sleep Wellness Bundle. Both Geoff and I have health issues that are made worse when we don't get the sleep we need, so this was the obvious choice!
The Sleep Wellness Bundle includes 2 Latex/Kapok Pillows and 2 Molded Latex Pillows. This had me on guard, as I have a mild latex allergy, so I wrote to the company to learn more.
Brentwood Home uses Talalay Latex, which you can learn more about at http://www.talalayglobal.com/. They are anti petroleum based products, and "the molded latex pillows are of the highest quality and do not smell nor contain harsh chemical agents." As a manufacturer, Brentwood Home is eco-friendly and tries to avoid petro chemicals at every turn.
So with that in mind, I decided to give them a try - and so did Geoff!
My Opinion:
The two pillows in each set are strikingly different - the Latex/Kapok Pillows are light and fluffy, more like the down pillows we are all familiar with. The Molded Latex Pillows are well... molded is a pretty good description! Rectangular and staying rectangular, as well as firm and supportive.
I started off using both pillows - the firmer one on the bottom, with the fluffy one on top, and as promised, there was no smell or off-gassing. This was great when I had pneumonia last month, as it lifted my head and shoulders up to help prevent coughing! But when I was ready to lay flat again, it was time to try them out one by one. And form a couple of opinions that weren't affected by pharmaceuticals!
The Latex/Kapok (fluffy) pillow was warmer to the touch than a down pillow. It is a good pillow for those who like to sleep in a soft, puffy cloud! I was impressed by the way it stayed fluffy throughout the night. Ultimately however, I found myself wanting more support, so I moved on to the other pillow. The Molded Latex pillow was also warmer than a down pillow, but doesn't hold onto heat the same way memory foam so often does. I thought it was going to be too flat for me, but I was surprised at just how comfy it was all on it's own! I'm a side sleeper, and this pillow gave me great support and turns out to be just the right height - without the need to flip and fluff every time I do wake up at night.
It did take some getting used to, but so far, I like it! I also really like the slimmer profile for cuddling - you aren't shoving a giant pillow in your partner's face. But that's all I'll say about that part...
But for me, the biggest factor was the latex. And while my allergy is pretty mild, I was concerned - after all, I'm sticking my face on this thing for 8 straight hours! Okay, so more like 6, but still. I am happy to say I haven't had any ill effects. No rashes, no itching, no symptoms at all. If you do have a latex allergy though - particularly a severe one - I would recommend checking into it more for yourself, and perhaps discussing the different latex sources with your doctor. I am NOT a doctor and cannot give medical advice.
Geoff's Opinion:
First off, I tried the softer pillow for about five minutes just to feel it, but that's not the style pillow I tend to prefer, and the two pillows together are a bit more than my back and shoulders like. My first reaction when I laid my head on the Molded Latex pillow was actually a bit of shock that it really was noticeably more comfortable than the pillows I'd been using. I was a little skeptical though, I as had recently bought an inexpensive pillow that was similarly comfortable... for about two nights. Then it lost it's shape and was slightly more comfortable than sleeping on wadded up rags. The pillow from Brentwood has held its shape and level of support for the few weeks I've been using it. So far, I love it.

About six months ago I got rid of a sleeper sofa, which I'd gotten off Craig's list about 6 years before that. It was really to big for my livingroom, but I did like being able to stretch out on it. When I put it out to the curb I kept the side cushions, and am now using one of them as a pillow in my bed. I think I could really, really use this prize! Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.
