Plaid is one of the big fall trends this year, and crochet is trending right there beside it. And luckily for those of us with hooks and yarn (and without a trendy budget), there are plenty of free patterns that combine the two! Vintage to brand new, I've collected 10 free plaid crochet patterns!

- Tartan Plaid Wash Cloths by HappyBerry via the Internet Archive: Washcloths are the perfect way to try new techniques - like a swatch, but you get something useful when you're done! And these are too cute! Video tutorial included with the written pattern!
- Woven Scotch Plaid Afghan on Free Vintage Crochet: This vintage pattern dates back to 1947 but has a classic look that's lasted to 2013 - and well past I reckon! Makes me wish I were going on a picnic! This beautiful version was crocheted by Ravlery user abitknottie!
- Plaid Slouchy Beanie by Patons: Super cute hat pattern sized for todders to big kids!
- Noro Plaid by Jessica Suzanne, on Make it (Messy): Noro yarn has a beautiful gradient, and this scarf pattern uses it to full advantage!
- Burberry Baby Blanket by Faythe Saxton, on Amateur Malcontent: Is there any more famous plaid?! And 6 skeins of yarn will run you far less than the "real deal."
- Plaid Baby Blanket by Lion Brand Yarn: The original photo makes it hard to see the plaid, so check the Ravelry gallery for some closeups - it's a good one!
Country Plaid Placemat by Erica Jackofsky by About.com: The perfect pattern for a country or vintage kitchen! This pattern is no longer available.- Lumberjack Flannelghan by Michele Shirley on Inspired Crochet Design: This one might have to compete with Burberry for iconic plaid status! Oh this takes me back - specifically to the plaid shirt that belonged to my dad... and that I stole when I went off to college! Wondering if I should make it up to him by making this blanket?
- Plaid Pillow by Red Heart: Use motifs or squares to make a plaid/gingham pattern! Great throw pillow with lots of inspiration for other projects!
- Plaid Crochet on Crochet Kitten: Lots of stripes and color changes make this plaid look complicated - luckily there's a photo tutorial to take you through it!

The Country Plaid Placemat link is broken : (
Tamara Kelly
Sorry about that Heather! It's fixed but from the time stamp it looks like you're loading an older, cached version of the page. Try hitting CTRL-SHIFT-R to refresh the page - then you should have the working link. 🙂
Anna
Fast forward to 2018, it's still broken

The Lumberjack Flannelghan is a favorite of mine. We have 5 of them in the house and one is covering our Cal King bed. I find it super fast to work up so don't let the size scare you. I wanna try some of the others tho, plaid is comforting to me 🙂
Tristi K
This is the pattern I've been eyeing for a while now. http://earning-my-cape.blogspot.com/2012/04/crochet-plaid-blanket-free-pattern.html

Bonnie
I would love to try my skills doing your plaid dishcloths, but am unable to print a copy of this pattern, do you have a link where we can download and print the pattern?
Your patterns are just beautiful and I plan on doing quite a few!
Tamara Kelly
Hi Bonnie! I'm glad you like them but they're not my patterns. 🙂 If you click on the name of the washcloth pattern and go to that blog post, you can ask the designer about how best to print from her site. 🙂 Thank you!
Liz

Hi Liz! I'm afraid I can't find any record of that pattern or that designer on Ravelry, and the only Sarah Gordon I find on Google is an actress.

EMAIL has to be in lower case...I have been looking for a pattern for a Hume (also spelled Home) Scottish Clan afghan. Do you have one or know where I can get one? Thank you so much. I hope to make this for my son for either his birthday or for next Christmas...depending on how long it takes me. Thanks for your site. Sincerely, Eileen
Tamara Kelly
Hi Eileen! No worries about the email, email addresses aren't actually case sensitive. 🙂 I didn't find anything specific, but maybe this will help: https://youtu.be/QaQe0KOCa5g

Karen Cartwright
Just to let you know, I adapted the idea of the plaid dish cloths to make a lapghan.
I used worsted weight Red Heart yarn, made up my own spacing between the lines of double crochet in the
width & length needed.
While the other plaid patterns are beautiful, I wanted something that could work up easily & fast.
To make the vertical lines I used a crochet hook 2 sizes larger than what I used to crochet the base part
of the lapghan. This way it was easier to make the vertical chain loops without them pulling too tightly.
I wish I could upload a picture to show you how it turned out.
Many lapghans are geared towards women, but I thought perhaps a plaid one would appeal more to men
who use wheelchairs in darker colors. Lighter and/or pastel colors would be nice for women using this pattern as well.
Tamara Kelly
🙂 Great idea, thank you for sharing it Karen!

In the Lumbèrjack afghan pattern, 5-7 pounds of yarn is listed. What does that mean in regular skeins...such as Red Heart, Lion Brand?
Tamara Kelly
Every make and model of yarn comes in different weights, you should be able to look at the label of the yarn you want to use to see the weight in oz. There are 16 oz in a lb.
Nancy Skipper

Hi Nancy! The photos are showing up for me, is there a specific one you can't see?
